i have ubuntu jaunty now installed in my system but my problem is it is locked in 800x??? resolution and when i installed nvidia driver the resolution goes to VGA and i cant change it to higher resolution cos the VGA resoltuion and other lower resolution is the only option...i want to have 1152x864 resolution >>>im using Geforce2 MX/MX400 ty guys
Both will work. Try the 2 if you want. Depends on the applications you use routinely. For normal light stuff you will see no difference. 64bit is also probably more buggy.
With Wubi there is no excuse, the funny thing though is, a kid in my class (Computer class) BOUGHT an Ubuntu CD from a friend of mine, the funny thing is, he bought the 8.04 beta from him and didnt install it even after A YEAR!
Thanks, I'm going to download ubuntu and run it in Virtual Box, tell me if I was to run Windows 7 in Virtual Box will 3d Acelleration help display the Aero theme?
Countless n00bs have migrated to linux solely for Compiz. What a waste. If you want flashy effects that waste your RAM try Vista.
As for virtualization, Virtualbox has caused multiple BSODs for me. I've never had a problem with VMWare. It's simply more stable. Why would a guest OS need virtualization anyways? I don't think anyone's trying to play games with them.
I think you're confusing virtualization and 3D acceleration. Most people have a virtualmachine so that windows only applications can be used and 3D acceleration is there to make it a more pleasurable experience. You don't want the windows to stutter when you move them around.
Regarding your n00b comment, I do agree that most people switching to linux, namely ubuntu are purely for this reason. However, were you not a n00b once too? beryl was the reason i switched back in 6.04
dude. has any of you got bug problem in your intel chipset base laptop? I've just install jaunty and I got this freeze problem. Too bad because in this version actually all my devices are recognized and i don't need to compile anything.....
Are you on VirtualBox OSE or an old version? I know for me running Ubuntu as a host using VirtualBox OSE I can't get the effects. What host are you running it on?
hey, i had that issue too, i made sure i use the new 9.04 ub and latest vbox. he installed, updated, then, installed that guest addtions thing, the it finally worked.
your sound problems. not everyones. 2.5 hours is pathetic and I bet you are at low settings. I can run my mac at about 2/3 settings and get 5-6 hrs. Oh and yet again you are not everyone, I have had hell with Xorg.
9.04 created nothing but problems for me. The alpha and beta worked fine but the day before the final release they removed the video drivers that work with my computer and I lost all effects. At first I thought my graphics card was dying, but after reinstalling 8.10 I can run compiz flawlessly again.
THAT IS FREAKIN AMAZING!!!! i wonder if this will work with Aero in Vista/7? i'm gonna download and install the new Ubuntu in my virtualbox sometime this week.
In a way you are right. Ubuntu is not the best distribution for newcomers, specially windows users. Even within the ubuntu universe, Kubuntu would be a better choice for windows users.
But the main problem is Ubuntu not including non-opensource software (although free as well), like mp3 codec or flash, although they are just a mouse click away.
For newcomers, better a more complete distro, where everything works from the start. I found Linux Mint and recomend it for windows users.
With Linux Mint Live CD everything works out-of-the-box (well, probably not 3D acceleration, because of proprietary drivers needed to install in the harddrive).
Also, Mint main menu is awesome (and much more like windows menu as well).

Using the graphics drivers provided by standard Ubuntu repositories is usually the easiest option. Newer Nvidia releases are added when deemed stable by the community (usually happens around the time of a new release).
Yeah, no... I'd rather NOT do everything throught the command line, considering this IS 2009. And I'd rather the drivers for my wireless card and video card actually work. It isn't the hardware, believe me...

Hey chris, you wanna try Wubi for windows! its a windows based Linux installer. It enables you install 4 different flavours of Linux, including Ubuntu, and you can select the size of a portion of your hard disk, and if you wanna remove it, you can simply Uninstall in the control panel. You never actually explained why I should install Ubuntu besides for wobbly windows. Is there anything exclusive and/or better I can get on a Linux system?
I'm sorry, but that is not the way to experiment an OS. The correct way is a dual boot system. Only then you can really evaluate your system. There are several utilities available to reduce the size of your windows partition, making space for another partition in your harddrive to install Ubuntu and keep both OSes running at full strength.
Also, Ubuntu can access windows partitions, so you will be able to use windows documents from inside Ubuntu, in order to try openoffice, for instance.
why on virtualbox.. install it as your primary OS in your system.. ubuntu is already having everything you need on a desktop except games.... ofcourse you can play them with xbox or PS2/3 .. :)
how about a tip on editing the Grub boot manager so you can have Windows XP as the default, and Ubuntu as the second choice. They should make that easier to edit..
there are several grub editors available, just check the software repositories (most are not enabled by default). Ubuntu has a "software sources" utility for that.
sory don't know if it's a stupid quistion but i tryed for some weeks ago but gave up when I found out that I whas needed to burn ubuntu down on a cd if I wanted to install it in virtualbox. Is there some way around this problem so I didn't ned to use a cd

becoming more stable lol it is more stable aslong as you dont break it lol solaris is more stable but there is not much in between ubuntu and solaris mind you lol
Stable enough that I been running it on my old pentium 3 for the last two years and I did not get much problem upgrading from hardy to Ibex and now jaunty. now imagine what it linux ubuntu can do on a modern pc!
Can any one help me! I want to run Itunes and lime-wire or frost-wire on a external hdd so i dont get any viruses! I have an old 40gb ps3 hdd and would like 2 try 2 run it off that. Is there any ways of doing this?? If not is there any way of putting a small operating system on an hdd? Any help welcome! I am also running windows vista if it makes a difference.
you can install a OS on a external hard disk, just GOOGLE it. Also, i recommend dont use limewire and frostwire as they use the gnutella network which has TONS of adware and spyware. Use ares instead.
This is real fucking amazing, i'm downloading it all right now. Also, thanks for informing me about the new Ubuntu version, i've been waiting for it for quite a while :D
If you're running an OS inside a VM, then I think you're just scared. You can better install it right on the HD if you want access to more resources and have better performance.
Or, since performance simply doesn't matter so much for many applications, you could simply want to switch quickly between OSs, or cut and paste between them, or not have to waste disk space in a partition for each OS, and not be "scared" at all.
I think it's kind of a shame that I can activate all these advanced 3D effects - rain drops on the desktop, windows setting on fire when closed, 3D desktop cube, etc etc - using Ubuntu with 512mb of RAM in VirtualBox, yet I can't get the simple transparencies of Windows 7 to work using higher specs in Virtual Box. How can MS make it take more power to NOT show a window, than it takes Ubuntu to create a 3D environment?
Indeed, while I'm not much of an advocate of Fedora(well, RPM distro's as a whole) Debian has been stable, only bad thing about it is the abundance of outdated pieces of software. This was about a year ago though, not too sure if it changed, but since then I've been running Arch which is just as solid with amazing package management.
i used ubuntu for a while, wanted to put the compz thing..messed up, went to the forums and found a bunch of assholes just like me looking for solutions too..and they say "ooohh..the support is unbelievable, you just find the answer in the forums"...yeahh, right!..kiss my fucking ass, someone better grabs ubuntu and starts making some money out of support problems folks, and fuuuck, pirillo your voice is annoying as hell!!!

They should make that easier to edit..
markcruiser64 2 years ago
there are several grub editors available, just check the software repositories (most are not enabled by default). Ubuntu has a "software sources" utility for that.

Ubuntu 9.04 recognized my Soundbalster Audigy SE card aromatically! That was my only gripe with Ubuntu 8.04. GREAT!

andreasheiberg 2 years ago
yes, you just set the virtualbox to mount the iso image of the CD and install from there. No problem at all

My only real excuse is familiarity. I'm sure it has advantages over Windows, but I'm just used to this OS, and it does what I want.
For others who find non-Windows OSs works for them, more power to ya :)

That´s my reason too, and i think it´s perfectly valid.

I am also running windows vista if it makes a difference.
rugbyymadman 2 years ago
you can install a OS on a external hard disk, just GOOGLE it. Also, i recommend dont use limewire and frostwire as they use the gnutella network which has TONS of adware and spyware. Use ares instead.

If you're running an OS inside a VM, then I think you're just scared. You can better install it right on the HD if you want access to more resources and have better performance.
alexanderjurjens 2 years ago
Or, since performance simply doesn't matter so much for many applications, you could simply want to switch quickly between OSs, or cut and paste between them, or not have to waste disk space in a partition for each OS, and not be "scared" at all.

I think it's kind of a shame that I can activate all these advanced 3D effects - rain drops on the desktop, windows setting on fire when closed, 3D desktop cube, etc etc - using Ubuntu with 512mb of RAM in VirtualBox, yet I can't get the simple transparencies of Windows 7 to work using higher specs in Virtual Box. How can MS make it take more power to NOT show a window, than it takes Ubuntu to create a 3D environment?

epicxbread 2 years ago
Indeed, while I'm not much of an advocate of Fedora(well, RPM distro's as a whole) Debian has been stable, only bad thing about it is the abundance of outdated pieces of software. This was about a year ago though, not too sure if it changed, but since then I've been running Arch which is just as solid with amazing package management.
