I don't know really what to make of the Assange situation per se because I wasn't there and the description of it is very open to interpretation. However I was impressed by Naomi Wolf's arguments, particularly of it being a political put-on. Jaclyn seems to have an entirely unrealistic view of sex; in her world if a man's wife wakes him up with a BJ it would be rape.

Wolf is very restrained in this discussion with Friedman. Ironically Friedman accuses Wolf of not knowing that there are (many more than Friedman enumerates) reasons why women do not speak up when they feel they are being raped. Wolf knows. Wolf is not saying Friedman is wrong, but that we must recognize that women have agency in the situation and they should not be treated as disabled, as incognizant, as not legally conscious and active. Treating women like so diminishes their agency.

I have no idea what happened, so I don't know whether Assange is guilty. But I can say this:
Consent is impossible if she is asleep.
Rape victims do not always report the crime immediately. It's possible that finding out that he raped another woman made her more comfortable to report it.
Keeping him in her home does not mean she consented. Many victims of abuse are afraid to leave their partners. Maybe her friends pressured her to throw the party.
The rape should not have been publicized.

@TENNSUMITSUMA Just as a joke one time, I had printed up "sexual consent forms." The forms had a series of boxes beside the detailed sexual acts. When I would bring a women home from a date, I`d ask her to tick the boxes and sign below. The response was usually one of laughter and disbelief but I would refuse to have sex until they signed. Which they always did. I recommend that this becomes a standard. We need to protect ourselves and let women know we are sick of their bullshit.

However I was impressed by Naomi Wolf's arguments, particularly of it being a political put-on. From some of the accounts of what happened via the Guardian, etc, it does "appear" that Assange may have been a bit forceful. But rape? More information is needed. Also, women tend to NOT report or even tell...

@lilgumshoe33 accusation of wich he is innocent, no prove was presented, there are not charges against him, it is just a manipulation to hold him there until the US manage a way to ask for his extradition to the States and then have their way with him, that's all, nothing to do with sex or violence, it's a set up

@kurydebarcelona Swedish law has no such law. In fact, Swedish rape law makes it technically rape to have sex with someone while they're sleeping. I am so happy to see this after read the Guardian report I didnt see how they were calling this rape and now seeing Friedman's weak arguments I am pretty convinced there was no rape and this is completely political.
