The main section where the song really progresses is missing. Barry must've written that without the tape recorder. I would loved to have known how it took shape after the tape recorder went off.
I'm crying of joy.. this is beautiful!! Glad to find a "demo" of it.. the birth of such a gorgeous love song! I always cry listening to the finished version... :( wow... thanks! and I was born in 1982.... but I have such a love for old music :)
This is one of the most facinating records I have ever heard. Even more so considering that this is a song that went on to sell millions and was covered hundred and hundreds of times by other artists. It's a priceless look at a legendary songwriting group creating a work of art. You learn more here about songwriting than you'd learn at stage school - and most importantly what you get here is free. I will treasure this recording. Thank you for posting it!
@teddybearsification Yes, the reversal was innocent in 1980 though it was appealed because of a suspected plagiarism. And the copyright and the right of publication were tried, it was reconciled.
They finally found that special fit at about 8:30, when either Robin, or Maurice went off on that special bit with the best fit for the tune that made it what it was..."when they all should let us be...", and that beautiful chord progression that accompanies the phrase. GOLD, I tell you>>>GOLD. Awesomeness.
Thank you for this; I think the creative process is perhaps more special than the finished article and it's a treat to hear. Barry looks aMAzing in the photo but he has his hair tied back rather than cut short doesn't he? I don't recall him having short hair except in the 60s. RIP dear Mo and Andy.
It is possible, but the programs I saw, it was just the three of them, and whomever was filming. First time I saw them doing this sort of thing, was on a PBS special, WAY BACK......
I can recall seeing them on TV showing how they did this. Maurice generally at teh keyboard, or Barry had a guitar, and they'd mess around, stop and converse about which chord the next part should be...it was fascinating and wonderful to see. Unfortunately, I was never able to get it on tape. (Kick myself again.)
@LukeShoveller Luke, please do not make comments on anything I post. You are NOT a Bee Gees expert, but you ARE very annoying. It was NOT the Keppel Road documentary. I have that one on DVD and the instance I am referring to is NOT on it. Had it been, I would have said it was on...blah blah blah. SO please do not comment on my posts anymore. Thank you.
I kindly commented. I have no idea who you are nor do I remember commenting on your posts but I'm sure I have, so it's lovely to hear from you again. I didn't CLAIM to be a Bee Gees expert, I merely asked you a QUESTION regarding where it might be from, hoping to engage in a CONVERSATION like a normal human being.
I have no idea where that was from, I racked my brains and decided that you were probably thinking of the Keppel, I was clearly wrong, where's the issue? Learn how to socialise.
@LukeShoveller I am a very social person, but I have noted that regardless of what is said, about anything concerning the Bee Gees, you always seem to have something to say, in effort to show how much you know of the Bee Gees. I clearly stated it was from WAY BACK...Keppel Road was not so long ago. I saw a PBS special about them BEFORE Main Course was released. I repeat my request: please do not comment about any of my posts. Nor TO me. Thank you.
I like to discuss things, most people are happy to discuss things and talk about others things, that is why comments exist. If you didn't want anyone to reply to your comment, asking what it might have been from, why did you post it?
I have quite a collection of clips and I may well have it, it would be in my interest to find out where it was from so I could see if I have the bootleg, it's nothing to do with 'show what I know', I couldn't care less about that, I would get nothing out of that.
@LukeShoveller if you have something to say, say it, that's my opinion. Who is anyone else to say who can post and who can't, and then, on top of that, try to determine what your motivation might be.
It some people's books, 13 years is quite a way back, it was my job to decipher what you may have actually meant. I posed the question, you answered in the negative, having some kind of fit in the process.

They write their own songs. though the Beatles write their own songs too but the Bee Gees produced such countless stars by singing creating music for them. Stars even became bigger stars by singing songs created by the Gibbs - the likes of Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Terri de Sario, Samatha Sang, etc.
it's like listening to magic being created. this is Beautiful. now stuff like this should be put out on a cd for Bee Gees fans they would love stuff like this. I would love to hear a full falseto version of the song just in case.
Barry Gibb, by far the best musician of all times. Hes created and sung the most beautiful songs during 50 years now -all huge, smash hits- and to top it off, did the same for the best singers. Bee Gees=gods of music. How deep is your love= ALL-TIME No 1 !!
If anyone wants to know the chords to this song, it`s E-Abm7-F#m7-Db7-F#m7-Ab7-A (with B bass) - E- Abm7-Dbm-F#m7 - B-Abmaj7-Abm7-F#m7-D9-Abm7-A (B bass) E - Emaj7 - A - Am- E- D6 -Db-F#m7-Am- (back to top)
Oh wait I fucked it up.... That middle part "and you may not think I care for you" is Amaj7-Abm7-F#m7-D9...It`s NOT Abmaj7 so remember that. Play the A chord but with an A note in the chord flat
Barry once said his whole secret to writing a song is keep doing it till it sounds right which I think is the best advice I ever heard. It`s not like Chris Martin where his fucking ego is so completely over the top and he plays three chords and tone deaf retards go "Oh that`s good", no this is real songwriting.
Well, I'm cerainly not tone deaf and I feel the passion behind alot of Coldplays songs and the Bee Gee's songs too, I think that's abit of a contrived comment to make! The scientist and Fix You are really significant to alot of people, I thikn you're really wrong. But I do agree with what Barry said.
I'm a jazz bassist who also loves the Bee Gees' music. It's really interesting to hear this. Number one, they use some classic jazz progressions - like circles of 4ths - and lots of minor and major seventh chords. Number two, it's fascinating to hear how they struggled with coming up with the now-familiar descending progression underneath "Cause we're living in a world of fools..."
I've heard that "Too Much Heaven" and "Tragedy" were written on a Saturday afternoon, and "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away" was written that night, which simply shows their amazing composing talent. Listening to this gives you an inside listen into their recording process. It is no wonder why they are so successful, and why the Saturday Night Fever album remained the best selling movie soundtrack for twenty years.
Wow they were creating this song, great find, goes to show how not easy it is, to create a song and the dedication and the love for what they were doing, Thanks for the post.
I LOVE!!! how at the start you hear lots of differences in the melody and lyric and then gradually piece by piece, try by try you hear the familiar song we all know comes to life
Thank you...

Ephemeral. Beautiful to witness. From out of nothing into existence. Some sounds we all now know.

This is the finest example of that intangible, elusive thing called chemistry.
Especially being all brothers, they could hear inside each others hearts and communicate in an unspoken language.
I was afraid this audio clip might demystify their magic.
It didn't.
Instead it confirmed to me what a gem that family truly is and that all music is a gift from God.

....despite the fact it includes some substantial keyboard work on the melody from Blue Weaver.(he created the line)
Blue owned this and when it circulated it revealed that he probably deserved a writers credit, although he didn't get one of course.
But what you say is true; although this clip probably isn't the best example of how they write.

It's so frustrating hearing them trying to find that Ab/Bb chord at the end of the verse that's in the final version... 4:45

Blue Weaver is playing piano, when Robin comes in later on, Maurice or Albhy takes over. ;)

Blue Weaver is playing piano, he's not a Bee Gee, you can hear him speak.;)

Fantastic! Where on earth do you find these??? Interesting how an odd time bits of lyrics come out while they're doing the melody.
