  • art supplies may only be 10% of it, bu I found a pencil called the General's Layout pencil, it has jet black led, and is very soft, and just the way that it feels on the paper as I draw gives me a lot of confidence. Something about this pencil just feels right to me, you know? Probably like when you found the Dixon Ticonderoga or the Black Prismacolour. It's hard to explain, but having this pencil really changed the way I draw...

  • i just need a pencil like yours that will make hard to erase dark lines

  • Can someone reply to this. I dislike sketchbooks because of the grainy paper. every pencil I use gives me an ugly look. and just this early look destroys my motivation to draw. But I have countless notebooks filled with decent or (dare I say) my "Best" drawings. I need advice. Sketchbooks. How do I overcome it's graininess? I'd appreciate if someone replies.

  • @OpusMagenum Its really a trial and error thing. Choose different sketchbooks until you find the right one...If the paper is grainy and hard to draw on there really is no way to overcome it without buying a new sketchpad altogether. If the sketchbook your looking at in a store isn't wrapped in plastic, flip through the pages and get the feel of them with your fingers.

  • polished crap is still crap. practice makes an artist, not fancy supplies. iv drawn with everything from dull pencils to brushes and ink, and i hav to say that there wasnt much of a difference. the inked one was just a bit nicer, but thats because iv been drawing non stop since age 4. lol my wall is completely plastered with Dragonball fan drawings from over the years, and some r god awful, with great pens and some r great with just basic #2 pencils :3

  • Tacks And Straws. All I Need :3.

  • tell me. Feather Or Prisma xD Da Vinchi probably a feather xD

  • Mr. Mark, could you tell me what your secret perhaps you need a knack for drawing or is it just hard work

  • I always have this pencil, that is almost like magic, but then it grew smaller because I used it so much... I used another pencil that was the same type, and it totally crushed my self confidence on drawing because it controlled it self.... I have some imagination right? :P

  • i have all hand-me-downs and gifts, and too many sketchbooks.but i often just use my school notebooks and pencil stubs. its sad.

  • @pokemonfreak4ev Your not alone. I can't use sketchbooks. Too grainy. Notebooks have the right smoothness. Perfect for drawing.

  • it's more of a good artist being able to bring out the true potentials of his material rather than a good material being able to bring out the true potentials of the artist

  • Jason Borne? I think you mean McGyver

  • No way! Renaissance materials were almost all made by the artists themselves especially the oils. If anything modern art materials are inferior to what we use now.

  • i have a question; if your going to start a manga what kind of format do you use ,like you know the boxes you put the pictures in?o;

  • @manga109005 what size is the tip of the pen that you and markcrilley have? Cuz i am planning to get one of them soon.thx! :D

  • @UrMomIzH0TLolNOT it's called Sakura Pen Micron and it looks like he's using a .30mm if you look close it has a purple 2 on it which is only on the .30mm as far as I can tell :P I hope i helped!

  • @wendy5640 Stalker Much? XD jk well you pay alot of attention :3

  • @kklola1 Dude, it's called pausing the video >.<

  • @wendy5640 >.< sorry xD

  • @The1WhosDraw

I'm 13 years old and I'm in 7th grade too!;)

  • @The1WhoDraws

    Ur right

    @markcrilley

Plz make more videos about how to draw eyes, hair, and bodies plz??? Thx!!:)

  • i have the same pen!!!!!

  • where can you get the bristol paper mark? I went to staples yesterday and they said they didn't have any.

  • Supplies are a large factor when it comes to drawing, though even if you have minor/Inferior supplies compared to professional artists you can create a masterpiece. If it is one in your eyes then that is really all that matters.

  • I agree with all these people. I am only 12, and I use only mechanical pencils that have been broken or messed with. but I'm still one of the best artists in my grade (7th). I have a whole sketchbook full of stuff I used almost worthless pencils on, but they still ended up good. The main thing that matters is talent. Practice, practice, practice!!!

    Who agrees with me?

  • @The1WhoDraws im in 7th too i use a regular paper and pencil and draw on my math notebook and i get many complements of my drawings :)

  • @The1WhoDraws I just wish I could even draw that good i mean i can nail the eyes but facial details and hair i suck at but then again im in 5th so any advice?

  • I think using old, used, or rough supplies is good for practice because you aren't afraid of ruining the supplies. That way you can be more relaxed and thus draw something more expressionate or have a more fun time drawing :)

  • @markcrilly. how much are your books

  • alot of people have alot of different shapes dont u think so? o.O

  • i think wat matters is wat the shape of ur hand is u need a pencil that is good for ur hands shape i think all that mattters is the shape of the pencil and ur hand is

  • I'm terrible at drawing even though all my life I dreamt of being an artist....you're a great inspiration :)

By the way...How can you talk and focus on drawing at the same time??? :-o

  • I don't think expensive art supplies make you a better artist but cheap art supplies can defeat your purpose. An example is when I was starting out I would use any kind of paper and try to paint watercolors. The paper wrinkled and the colors wouldn't flow nicely and I felt frustrated. When I finally bought watercolor paper it made all the difference and I wanted to continue painting. Maybe the wrong supplies can slow down the learning process.

  • i love how hes just working on the drawing all detail and stuff but he's talking about the comments aha i can't do that i'll be all confused drawing wat im saying XDD

  • I completely agree with you.

The quality pencil will make the lines look bad but the shape will remain the same. Sometimes a bad pencil will break or cause problems. I use a mechanical pencil. Also, make sure you eraser is good so that lines will disappear completely.

  • I've watched you for a while now and I just don't get how when you draw your hand movements look so free and easy going, for example when you draw straight lines a lot of the time you'll leave gaps or not take it all the way to the edge of the picture but in the end it looks so much better than if you put in a solid line, I have a very hard time doing that, I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist in this aspect do you have any advise on how to relax and be a little more easy going?

  • that handful of acorns and tube of toothpaste thing reminded me of macgyver...fuck yeeeeah..

  • I do believe that if you learn to draw/create with the worst tools you can adapt easier to using "superior" tools. Although, working with REALLY poor quality tools can make drawing/creating a chore.

Try and find a happy medium. Start with the inexpensive tools and then move on if you do not feel comfortable using it or opt for the middle quality tools to start.

  • Is it true you got it or you don't and how do I put the picture in my head on paper please help

  • Absolutely love this vid. I think you need a decent drawing materials - pen, pencil, etc.I get a mixture, some things I feel are only worth buying good - like markers - I get letraset Promarkers, but for drawings pencils, I don't think you need to go too high end. I've had an attachment to £50 6bs from the post office!

  • I bought a lot expensive art supplies, but indeed, it haven't made me drew better. Well my works did really became a bit polished well compared to the rough art I made before. But, I can say it "CAN help" you make better works. But that "wouldn'"t give a big boost on your work. Everything still depends on practice, mastery and stuff. But, in art supplies, you better "choose or discover where you are comfortable with." That can help you out. :)

  • lol at 7:11 i was like ok challenge accepted

  • i know how that one guy feels i have a condition with my nervous system and i can't use my left hand or the left side of my right hand with out feeling like there's a million needles in my hand but when i can draw i can get some good realism drawings out of me ^_^ (search for rebecca9965 on deviantart)

  • I like how Mark stays true to manga roots, his art (compared to other artists) is really manga style.

  • Wow YouTube won't let me Finnish my comment

  • In the end the quality of a drawing usually comes from a few things.

A the mood of the artist, which reflects both in your work itself and how long you can facilitate the drawing in your full attention. Coming back to a drawing can greatly affect the outcome.

B The suitability of the individual pencil to the task and how you are treating it at that moment. Bear in mind that having a 'good' quality pencil does not mean its the same as another of the same pencil or even any better than a 'poor'

  • For me this is a troubling topic as I am infancy one of the people who consciously wants to use the best quality equipment I can but am still intimidated to use such equipment. For example I got a large graphite art kit made by Windsor and Newton as a gift and the only thing I've used is the glass paper. The pencils are better in quality than my stadlers but I'm more comfortable with them. Infact my favorite pencil ATM is a 7p 5h I got In a pack from a 99p store

  • I like the texture of notebook paper but I hate the five star notebook paper because it's too soft and hard to erase. Is there any type of good quality paper that had that rough texture to it?

  • Looking at your nails got me biting mine again.

  • Hey mark you should do a live Q/A. Maybe get some questions from your twitter feed and live stream while you answer and ask for more questions. Just a thought

  • Thumbs up if you skipped to end to hear him say "And ill be back with another one, Real soon"

  • Comment removed

  • WELL.... all i have is notebook paper and cheap copy paper,,, and crayolas stuff too :( i think im good with what i have tho :P

  • Skill is definitely a large part of making good art work, along with LOTS of practice. Good quality art supplies is also nice and helps in making better quality. I did used sharpie or ball-point pens to ink my lines and I definitely see the difference now that I use Micron pens (which I adore). When it comes to coloring, I use a combination of Prismacolor and a set of off-brand color pencils, with the Prismacolor giving the work a better finish instead of just flat color.

  • Mark, I know this isn't related to this particular video, but do you believe that if your art is part of a huge fandom that it should detract from the quality of it.

Or that even if you are passionate about that fandom, you shouldnt draw it so that your art is 'unique'.

Many people have pointed out to me that I shouldn't be drawing as part of the 'canine' fandom because it is so large and it stops my art being 'unique'.

  • @118Giggles I have also been given this comment by people. In all honesty, I see no reason why a person should not be able to draw artwork as part of a fandom. If you like a fandom, why not show your support for it or what you like about it? Your personal artistic style is what makes your art unique and will set you apart no matter what you draw. It's silly for people to judge your artwork's 'uniqueness' based on it representing a fandom or not.

  • where does he get those black pencil

  • @billybobjoe1236 It's a brand of colored pencil called Prisma Color. You'll need to buy a set of them to get a black one.

  • Search for xXforcesXx continues at day 3. Food source is low.

  • @andrea28893 LOL >.<

  • kool

  • i hate when i want to draw something outside and wind blows, i just get so angry, i act like a lunatic, I darn so much, and then after all that ...CRY

    P.S not period!!

  • @MsBubzbeautylover Well, there SHOULD have been one after "S" in "P.S". But, I'll let it slide this time. I'm watching you.

  • Mark, I thank you for showing me....us (YouTubers) your amazing artwork. One day I hope to draw/sketch as good as you or come close. Oh and heres my life in 9 words. " The inner mechanisms of my mind are an enigma." I got this from a friend. :D

  • "I don't need a gun, all I need is... A handful of acorns and this tube of toothpaste. STAND BACK."

...This line needs to be put in a movie or comic book. It might be due to sleep deprivation but i haven't laughed so hard in a long time. XD

  • I've heard that renaissance artist used a projection of a draft to help them with their work

  • I LIKE YOUR VIDEOS! tkns, i learn a lot of things.

keep doing how to draw videos.

me and to friends we are doing a manga book a very cool story, and tkns to you e learn more things to draw the characters !

    thank you very mutch!

  • You had the ruler upside down!!!!

  • @francesca199822 He uses the gap between the ruler and the paper to twilt the pen and do lines in various angles.

  • HOW DO YOU PUBLISH YOUR WORK!!! I WANT TO KNOW!!!

  • @Walktrhroughgames why don't you just google it?

  • speaking of good art tools the website jetpens.com has wonderful tools that helped me with the quality and stuff like that of my Manga pictures ex: i was using a .7 mm pencil and drew good pictures but couldn't get the little details that wowed people but when i bought a .3mm pencil i was really able to get those little details that i was not able to do with the .7 mm

  • Painters in the past, had to make there own paint out of pigment (for the colour) and seed oil and then left in animal intestines. I'm not sure if its the right oil. But using the right art Supplies does matter as it affects the result. however it is not everything you don't need the top end stuff to emprove your drawings, only you can do that!

  • I noticed when you are inking you dont connect lines. What is the reason for that?

  • did u take drawing classes? or were u born with drawing talent?

  • hey mark do you scan ur artwork :)

  • i was on a site and some guy post the best way to draw manga(scan), use a blue col-erase pencil, an 8H pencil, and a 2B pencil.i tried it and i thought it was way easier.:P

  • Ya, I too have a problem with getting a lot of saliva on my art work. ^ ^

  • I missed the previous video, so I don't know if this point was brought up, but... I think the importance of the supplies has a lot to do with the artist's style as well. I do pointillism/stippling and ink drawings with near-baroque level of detail; every drawing takes months; some, even years. My sketchbooks and/or paper need to be able to resist all the wear and tear of carrying them around, and the inks need to last. Aside from that I agree with the other comments. Great video!

  • Mark u inspire me i always wanted to become some kinda artist. And i decided i want to become a manga artist..Your how to draw videos really help.Im gonna make how to draw videos to whaen im perfect at drawing manga so...Thx ^-^

  • I'd have to agree, the supplies aren't the most important thing. My style is pretty simple; manga/anime graphite/ink no color. So stuff like pens and pencils I've pretty much got covered. But I've got no idea when it comes to paper, any suggestions would be appreciated. Keep up the good work.

  • what type of paper do you use?

  • @artman2569 Strathmore Bristol.

  • es muy buen video :D podrías decirme que tipo de papel utilizas?

  • @ApfelLindemman Él está usando papel Strathmore Bristol

  • Hey Mark please answer my question.

Can you draw cartoon characters in Manga style?

  • I've been making manga for a year now so far only made one real chapter of a serie and also a couple of oneshots, but you really helped me with some stuff i didn't understand. thanks!

  • @xXforcesXx Calm...

  • My sharpie that I used to ink with died SECONDS into inking a picture. so I fought with it and had to CARVE into the paper, totally ruining the art. I don't care WHAT I use, I can use just about any colored pencil and any sort of inks. things that I really really care about usually get hung or saved if it's on poor paper. A lot of times, I will use a crayola and an ink pen to finish art and it looks nice. I think it really depends on the skill and adaptability of the artist.

  • Mark, please help me: I'm 20 & my boyfriend who's 25 is a decorated marine (purple heart, distinguished service) he loves it when I draw him pictures, but I can't get the one I want right!! It's me kissing him in his dress blues with my hands on his chest & neck & his hands on my waist. Please please please please PLEASE help me!!! -thanks, SD (SD r my initials)

  • YAY :D

  • i get scared of running out of ink or having a twitch in my hand

  • anyone wanna question me, then ima get all acorn and toothpaste on yo butt!

  • Saliva? You get saliva on your drawings? xD

  • @markcrilley , Okay so, I use my fingers for shading but I rarely see people use their fingers...is using your fingers for shading alright? I would love to know the answer, thanks! (;

  • @Dusty08148 i use my fingers for shading too, and I think doing that makes everything look just 10 times better and theres no problem with that at all

  • He has told us how he got published in a few interviews from Cartoon Block and some other interviews, also in a "message from my subscribers." He gets asked that question millions of times I expect Mark is quite sick of it...Go to cartoon block and in his interview with mark crilley mark tells how he got published in part 1 2 or 3 i can't remember which one.

  • PH-balanced paper and some fine point pens that don't bleed are great, but it has always bugged me that some people think that quality art supplies are magically going to replace the need to improve your skills. It really is "practice, practice, practice"! Nothing can replace experience, no matter how talented you naturally may be. Experimenting is great too! Nobody draws exactly the same nor do they prefer the same kind of lines. Try out different supplies and find what you like.

  • I like this kind of discussion, it's always very interesting. I agree with you: art supplies are no magical ingredients for success, only hard work is.

This video may not be an actual "how to draw" but you still hilighted a significant fact :) : A drawing can be beautiful (as were the panels you were working on), but it will get even greater with a background! :) Good luck on finishing Brody's Ghost if you're not yet done with it. I hope you'll give us another topic to discuss soon :)

  • Mark!! Where do you get your pens ? When i use my REGULAR pens it makes a mess on my paper. How much do yours cost ?

  • @rogernaruto13 same

  • iam not good at drawing i dont have " a blessing" but i like it ;D

  • Hey Mark. I just wanted to ask, what size and type of comic paper do you draw your work on. Is it Bristol Board, 11 x 17 with a 10 x 15 live area? I have been doing some research online and even asked some other artist I know, and they said this is the most common size comic/manga artist use. Do I have to use this certain size to make a manga? When you started working for Dark Horse, I suppose they gave you what size they needed the comic board to be (was it as I said)?

  • My question is why can everyone who I know draw manga so beautiful?? I can't draw body's can you make a video of that?? ;$

  • and yeah whats that pen u use?

  • oh oh i have a question! wheres that ring from? xD

  • " ITS LIKE A SCENE FROM A MOVIE MANN!" ~lol mark

  • You don't need acorns or toothpaste to kill someone,

You can probably kill an army of armed guards with the cuteness of a teddy bear! XD

Also, I was the one who posted the comment about the money, HA! Thanks Mark!!!

  • I have a question. Do you write out all of your pages out in a script format first? I think that's one of Dark Horse's requirements. Does it help you at all or do you prefer the flexibility of it without a script?

  • What use could acorns and toothpaste be in a fight?!?!?

  • @lunieloona713 Hurt their eyes with minty toothpaste and make them choke on the acorns whil they are blinded.

  • Michaelangelo was believed to have used just a scrap piece of paper and crude charcoal pieces for his very original sketches.

  • Anyone else notice how he just casually draws this fantastic looking art while he leisurley talks? So relaxed, thats the sign of a PRO >_>

  • @NekoGothIGirl101 I would definitely enter idk if I'd win tho

  • I learned about you via one of my friends and I've learned ALOT from your videos. And. I'd like to thank you for it.

But to get to my point, I'm about 16 right now and am plotting out my first manga now so it's ready when I have finally mastered my art techniques. However, until then, I try to draw panels for my wannabe manga, but when I do I don't know to set up that particular page. I've looked into other manga and have always wondered how they decide the format of the page.

    Do you think you

  • @LikeSugarHigh101 i was watching this documentary on anime and manga, and the point is to think of each panel as a movie picture, as if the manga is a drawing of each part of the scene of the movie, if that makes sense xD;;

  • Oh my god! Mark, you said coppics! I'm not your friend anymore. :P

  • haha i read about a graffiti artist that uses cardboard. granted graffiti is a whole different playing field and experimentation with other medias and canvasaes/wall types/cardboard (lol) is crucial for development.

  • Hey Mark

I just want to thank you, I've learnt heaps from your video's

Check out my speed art guys

    Please support me as well.

    Thanks

    /watch?v=YwT2aayo68g

  • Can you draw a skeleton? 0.o

  • Mark

you are holding your ruler the wrong way round

    there is no 71 cm

  • @bingo7612 or with some cameras it flips the video around

  • A Lead Pencil! Its May Fav :P

  • hahahaha that is so true i have some expensive tiny tiny TINY paint tubes that are supposedly really good but i havent used them cuz im afraid to LOL

  • "All I need is....a handful of acorns and this tube of toothpaste!"

    xD

  • please can you just answer the question that everyone wants to know the answer to HOW DO YOU GET A MANGA PUBLISHED? THE FATE OF ALL YOUR SUBSRIBERS DEPENDS ON THIS!!!!!!!!!

  • @xXforcesXx i think he did that a long time ago lol

  • @xXforcesXx There's a video in the related sectionwith that exact title...sorta. It should be by someone whose name on YouTube is "cartoonblock"

    /watch?v=LNleCLXGlx0

  • @xXforcesXx He's already said it a thousands of times

  • @xXforcesXx he have videos about that:D

  • @xXforcesXx I think he answered this many times already... But the first thing you want to know to get published is that you need to work, work, work and work a llittle bit more on your art. Ask people around you if they'd buy your manga, if yes try to get in touch with a publisher :)

  • @xXforcesXx i'm pretty sure he's covered this in one of his message to subscriber videos and he talked about it in the interveiw on cartoonblock

  • @xXforcesXx WATCH HIS OLDER VIDEOS hes covered it a LOT.

  • @xXforcesXx ive been a big fan of manga and anime. I watch a lot of it, too much actually. Recently, I've been watching this anime called "Bakuman" and it really had given me a deeper understanding of how manga artist get their mangas published and turned into an anime. Im not saying you should watch it, but it is rather an option you can choose for yourself. I am meerly suggesting one of the thousands of options, but it did help me understand the life of a manga artist. =)

  • @Arvic1212 I started reading Bakuman and totally loved it and agree with you! It totally opens up the world of manga and anime and also the emotional indepthness of being an artist. Kinda like your drive...

  • @xXforcesXx You draw a manga and send it in to a editor, get it aproved. end off story.

  • @xXforcesXx he made a video just about that XD

  • @xXforcesXx the answer has been put out by our manga god. just look it up from his channel and stop asking that. thank you and have a nice day good sir :)

  • How does one become a professional manga artist and illustrate manga?

  • @HExATExMYxTACO43 I think he has an older video about the process of becoming a manga artist and working your way up.

  • Stunning work- such an inspiration.

  • pow manero adorei os desenhos

    aprendi muito

  • Where do you find most of your inspiration when you drawn. And would you recommend office max or office depot?

  • Comment removed

  • im seriously good at drawing i have been told but i can't shade or add tone, but for me my drawing is like weekly limited, so i can draw good then its bad what would your suggestions be ?

  • Hey!! Your An amazing artist! I was wondering if you coul have a 'how to draw..' video on a life like dancer. Like a ballerina on pointe! If you have the time to do that, it would be so appreciated! Oh and I know it's late and all but CONGRATS on your books:)

  • Can you make a video on how to draw a teenage boy? I'm having some trouble.

  • can you plzz do a tutorial on how to draw rin okamuras hair from blue exorsist

  • @markcrilley WHAT KIND OF PEN DO YOU USE FOR INKING?!

  • how can u draw at the same time u talk

  • WooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooW

    It is amazin, beautiful!!!!!!!!

  • Hay guys! I was wondering if anyone could help me? My problem is I can never find a pen thin enough to ink over my drawings with! Whenever I do the ines are far to think in my opinion for small details. Could anyone suggest something to me?

  • @anythingredisdead i get my inking pens from Michaels. its an arts and crafts store and i buy ALL my supplies from there. they have literally everything. hope i helped.

  • @sami011992 cool! But is it an american store? I'm from Scotland :(

  • @anythingredisdead yes it is. but i'm sure you can buy from the website. michaels.com

  • @sami011992 Great! Thanks :D

  • @anythingredisdead Hiya!!there are a few suggestions I can give you. I guess it would say it depends on how much you are willing to spend. For about 10-20 bucks you can buy a set of the Prismacolor Premier pen set, it comes in the following sizes: .08,.05,.03,.01 and .005(very fine!!) very black and very nice points! now if you have from 60-100 bucks you can get a set of Koh-i-noor Rapidiographs these are great to use the only prob. is they require routine maintenance, :-D

  • @CyberKatt Wow! This is great thank you! I think I'll go for the cheaper set...lol xD Thanks again!

  • Is your next Brody's Ghost book comming out soon 'cause I want to know what happened after he saw that his ex-girlfriend was next on the penny murderer's list!! Please tell me when it is commming out and where I can but it.

  • idr who asked about not erasing but... next time u sit down to draw dont use one start and finish the piece without trying to redo parts of it sometimes you can really surprise yourself. and for some this approach never works. and to answer marks q i found that using like a really cheap pencil or such really does mess with the outcome of the overall picture but if u use at least a decent pencil i generally do decent

  • Sometimes i can draw. quite well too. sometimes, i cannot. it depends on my mood, the temperature, time of day, my inspirations, and wether i am tired or not. (mentally). this means i could never really give myself a real deadline for anything, because the times i can draw vary too much.

  • I wanna know why you don't ink solid lines for background and detail. Instead you tend to break them up into shorter lines.

  • You got me all excited when you said "new Brody's Ghost comic" >.>

  • Markcrilley I have a question how do you set up the page layout for a manga
