@dcharles09 also there is a guy who is gone to put the chocks at the back wheels of the aircraft while the beacon light is still switched on that also is a no no !!!!
Very good and distinct wand movements. As a pilot I can appreciate that... Very easy to distinguish... It's a thankless job, you appear to take pride however... Well done.
@Learjetjock i work for air wisconsin at IAD with regional express aircraft, and it's always nice when the crew compliments us on bringing in a plane. you're right; it is a thankless job but we do take pride when we do a good job (and even more pride when we're recognized for it). thanks
@dcharles09 as long as it is withing the safety zone you can move the bridge while the marshaller is parking the aircraft. But if it goes beyond the safety zone before thumbs up from marshal then its a violation
How come the arrival agents start moving the Jet Bridge the millisecond the plane stops, that's extremely dangerous. You are suppose to wait for an OK signal.
I know what your saying, were not even supposed to approach the Aircraft until the Beacons off and the Engines are Spooling down, and with Prop Aircraft, until they have stopped Turning. However.
Wow that's pretty awesome! I may be getting hired for Southwest soon...I know this job won't be easy but could someone tell me exactly how hard it will be? Comparing it to something?? Please!!
It's a pretty good job. You're lucky you're getting in at Southwest though because it's not nearly as good at any other airline. The money is better and the environment you work in is much better.
At first you're going to be doing everything from loading and unloading bags from planes to draining lavatories to running bags with a tug. After a while you figure out how lines work and you determine what you like doing the most, and you typically primarily do one thing.
This was the second airline I had worked for. The previous job I had was the same type of work and I was also a Lead in charge of 2 gates. This type of training varies with the airlines but for this specific one it was 2 and a half weeks in class then another 2 weeks on the job with 2 instructors there...but of course, over that time we went over alot of other stuff other than just the ramp work as well.
pilotsr; your comment is quite right, however, as a ramp worker at Heathrow I see this happening everyday! Especially on the aircraft where two jetways are required, the first-class one will always be moved forward to within a few inches of the fuselage so that the second the engines shut down it can be docked and the critical '2 minute' limit for the door to be opened can be met! Unless the airside safety officer is around!
The marshalling was fine, however I spotted a big no-no on the jetway operators part. They started to move the bridge before the aircraft came to a complete stop, and wheels were chocked...

Absolutely violation. The bridge can not approach untill the aircraft has stopped and it is with the cholks in place.

Not True - AirTran policy is that as soon as the marshaller gives the X, the jetway goes to the aircraft.
tpaairman 3 years ago
Interesting, good to know. I never knew of anyone that did it that way.

I'd love to know what those signals mean.
KieranSmithUK 3 years ago
1) identify gate
2)turn left (from the pilot point of view)
3) taxi straight ahead
4) normal stop

@billythomas18 If you enjoy being poor. The airlines wages are laughable. They can afford to pay us all more, thye just choose not. Douchebag CEOs

@billythomas18 That being said I really enjoy the job, it is a lot of fun when you have a good group to work with!

you should use real ICAO hand signals, or make them more narrowly
sucinum85 4 years ago
Many airlines teach it the way in the video, at our airline we actually go a lot wider.

What sort of training do you have to go through to do this job? It seemed you were really precise - is that from tons of training or from experience?

i would complain about the jetbridge operator, big no no. Atleast one of the gears should have been chocked before bridging the aircraft
JustinToXiCPiG 4 years ago
No - AirTran policy is that once the marshaler gives the X the jetbridge can then proceed.
