the only thing I could think of was: Oh! come oooon!
Well, Hayao, time to come out of retirement! You still have the ideas and sketches and Pipi longstocking is public domain nowadays! you have nothing to lose! =D
There's so much heart that went into these preliminary sketches, that it just baffles me as to the narrow-mindedness that would turn down the opportunity of seeing your obscure work transformed into a worldwide phenomena. Before this, (being neither a pedo nor living in Euope) I've never before heard of the name "Pippi Longstocking". I found the name in a forum post, and casually looked it up. If it weren't for the other keyword "Miyazaki", I wouldn't even have clicked on this video!
well who do you think would be willing to do it from the japanness side? and would it still be good to make or is it to old of an idea?
i dont know if the anime world is still up to the task of haveing a kid'z show where the plot is still as plane as it is they might just turn the tale into a love story like they have been doing for the last lil bit im not dameing the idea im just asking who would be up to the task of doing so and how would the content look with japan'z story telling today?
I'M SWEDISH AND I'M POSITIVE THAT IF THEY WERE TO ASK TODAY THE PERSONS THAT HANDLE THE LEGACY OF ASTRID LINDGREN,( ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY MADE A CRAPPY GERMAN MADE VERSION LET'S ADMIT IT GERMANS CAN'T ANIMATE IF THERE LIVES WHERE ON STAKE.)
I am German and couldn't agree more. The German cartoon was horrible and I wish Miyazaki would ask the people who handle the legacy of Mrs. Lindgren again. Those watercolour pictures are just lovely. You know that a Ghibli Pipi movie would be awesome.
Thank you so much for uploading this!! :D I am swedish myself an I think that if anyone would have done Pippi Longstocking into a good animated movie it would be Miyazaki. (Yes, I know there is an animated tv series and a movie but I don't like them at all..)
That would have been the most incredible version of Pippi ever! What a shame!!! Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli know how to evoke the most incredible sense of time and place and would have been brilliant at this story! Thank you for sharing this!
this would have been a cute movie i wish she'd let him create it it would have been another of my fav's..... yeah make her hair kind of less bouncy Hayao this would have been a great film i know it maybe that's why Ponyo's hair is red headed! xD
this is pretty cool! tho pippi's hair isn't right. her braids stick out cuz they're so tight! that's just bouncy. that's the only critique i have. i wonder if this will resurface somehow now that the times have changed? i'd like to see it happen! tho maybe make her hair less bouncy.
oh yea! thanks a lot for showing this! i liked it a lot, even tho my unaskedfor critique suggests something different. my favorite pic is the one where she's swinging over the city
@WILKOEDENS I agree with you on the Nelvana animated movie/series, which didn't even try to be exciting! It was torturously pedestrian, and I'd be mortified if this was the ultimate representation of Pippi Longstocking. (To its credit, it does follow the original books... well, up to a point. It never did a very good job of it.) I'm in full agreement; it's a tragedy that Miyazaki's version wasn't accepted by the licensors.
I'm surprised this film was denied. Honestly, there are over 9000 adaptations of Pippi, in both book and film. What was wrong with one more? Miyazaki just wasn't well-known enough at the time, I suppose.
@ekkaxfabuloso There are, to date, 7 adaptations of Pippi. Note that Miyazaki's version was only turned down *after* his meeting with Lindgren, so while Lindgren probably liked it, I think it may have been the *licensors* that turned it down, maybe because everyone and their mother wanted to do an adaptation. Yes, Pippi was *that* popular (as high in demand as the Beatles)! And indeed, there was a 12-year span between 1970 and 1982 when an adaptation was done!
aww, he was so enthusiastic about it wasn't he? that's so sad >_< and that's really nice that they studied so much on it, only to be denied ;_; it's just so sad i can't help but think of that! thanks a whole lot for posting this! we never would have seen it without you!
was that she was the author and had every right to refuse, but say no to Miyazaki is like denying a child to be happy, would have been a beautiful dream and sublime work
@NekoyX I heard that Miyazaki's project was turned down *after* his meeting with Lindgren. I don't know if it was Lindgren herself who turned it down, it may have been the licensors, as Pippi was so ridiculously high in demand. And note there was 12 year absence of adaptations between 1970 and 1982 (the Russian Pippi TV movie)!
I really think Miyazaki truly deserves another chance. His version would've been light years better than that pedestrian piece of crap movie/series from Nelvana!
@ryuuseipro personally believe that the animated film and the Nelvana series were not particularly bad to call them "crap" were decent commercial work and if I enjoy, but Miyazaki is out of this caliber and different level, and whether he deserves another chance do this work
@NekoyX You're entitled to your opinion, even though I strongly disagree. Although Nelvana has had some decent work under their belts (before they improved in the 2000s), like ROCK & RULE and others (and they also helped out on INSPECTOR GADGET!), they also had some dubious stuff as well (the CARE BEARS movies are a prime example). The PIPPI cartoon was no exception.
@ryuuseipro forgiveness, when I speak Nelvana series, I was referring exclusively to the Pipi animated series, which I consider decent and enjoyable enough, and it is true, Nelvana has had its ups and downs, Rock and Rule never saw it, but what if I hate Nelvana, is that like 4Kids is maul and poorly adapted anime series, but has had series that I liked the point of fanaticism Bob and Margaret, 6teen, Donkey Kong Country to Franklin the Turtle
Wow! Thank you for sharing. I love Miyazaki's works but well, I've never ever heard of this project. The watercolors are simply beautiful. The music choice went well with it too. =)
This needs to happen. that's all i can say right now. seriously.

@ImMysteriousIndeed Fair enough, but comparing the two is kinda pointless since that one was actually produced and this wasn't.

@Antimony I guess so, I just like how the other one looks better. xP
