Genetic dysfunction is a problem humans face too and we have the technology to know if a human life has a genetic problem before they are born. Should they be euthanased? There are some inaccuracies that need to be addressed. Inbreeding is not what causes the birth of white tigers; it is an unfortunate consequence of the tiny size of the white tiger gene pool. It is a mutation, but that is essentially what different breeds of dog are as well; mutations of the wolf.
Also, it's not as though people want to produce defected tiger cubs, which is why out-crossing is in practise. I suggest you do more research because I found this out in 5 minutes of fact checking.

Wouldn't there be enough white tigers by now if they're breeding that many, that there are established blood lines and they could starting working out the negative mutations? For instance, with domestic animals, if the animals are removed by at least three generations (third cousins basically) there are generally none of the deformities related to inbreeding, right? I'm not advocating this, just curious.
@FireflyNecromancer There are plenty white tigers enough generations removed from each other that they can mate without it really being inbreeding. Although, the genetics involved gets really complicated here and inbreeding can also cause other genes such as stripelessness to show up. So unfortunately inbreeding is probably not going away. But yeah your right inbreeding is no longer required to simply produce a white tiger

Actually most white tigers are not siberian/bengal hybrids, and by most I mean 95% of them, no siberian tiger is white, atleast never been documented, they tried to make a siberian tiger white with a white bengal tiger and a normal siberian tiger, and made a white siberian/bengal hybrid. 99% of white tigers are bengal tigers!

To add to my previous comment, immune system problems are directly related to the white gene (Siamese cats have the same problem, and also suffer from Strabismus due to the white gene). Lethargia and depression are a result of Outbreeding Depression, i.e. the breeding of whites and oranges to strengthen the white tiger genome, not inbreed it. This is done for the health of the animals.

These are my favorite animals, all though many die at an early age you have to see it as either way it was going to die, now yes it does suck that when they are born they have health issues, but when you think of it, many people are born with health isssues, its just life. What about the very rare instances when white tigers are born in the wild? I don't think a group of people showed up and forced the tigers to breed to make sure that a white cub is born. I agree with you on the fact that the white tigers in zoos & circuses are produced by selective breeding, but there are rare occurences when a white tiger is born in the wild. There are not many white tigers in the wild, but there are still a small amount.
I agree that you shouldn't kill the togers jsut because they are born orange. But among animals there is no such thing as "incest" I saw my cat give birth to a littler of her "sons" babies and we didn't make them mate with each other. There is nothing with the way these animals are bred if they didn't want to mate with each other then they wouldn't! That is like saying it is bad to let a calico cat mate with a persian cat.

They probably get their information from people whose business is rescuing big cats. Not only them, but the Association to Prevent Cruelty to Animals and Humane Society also are in agreement as far as the cruelty in producing white tigers.

@1888matt Ligers have a lot of health problem, I am not very familiar with zorses but I would assume that they have problems as well. And mating two white tigers would make all white cubs, but it would still be inbreeding, which would lead to health problems.

I've seen websites that show the horrible deformities that result from inbreeding Persian (domestic) cats for certain traits. Inbreeding is never a good thing. I hope that poor guy with the facial deformities is (or was) well taken care of. :-(

Some people may choose to mate with their brothers/sisters or other family relitives but those are people. There are some inaccuracies that need to be addressed. Inbreeding is not what causes the birth of white tigers; it is an unfortunate consequence of the tiny size of the white tiger gene pool. It is a mutation, but that is essentially what different breeds of dog are as well; mutations of the wolf.
Also, it's not as though people want to produce defected tiger cubs, which is why out-crossing is in practise. I suggest you do more research because I found this out in 5 minutes of fact checking.

While I agree with most of what the video has to say, I have a question. Wouldn't there be enough white tigers by now if they're breeding that many, that there are established blood lines and they could starting working out the negative mutations? For instance, with domestic animals, if the animals are removed by at least three generations (third cousins basically) there are generally none of the deformities related to inbreeding, right? I'm not advocating this, just curious.

Although, the genetics involved gets really complicated here and inbreeding can also cause other genes such as stripelessness to show up. So unfortunately inbreeding is probably not going away. But yeah your right inbreeding is no longer required to simply produce a white tiger

A white-blue-eyed cat is likely to be deaf, though there are exceptions . A white or piebald dog (has white splotches of varying reach and bits or patches of color) is likely to suffer from blindness. Dalmations are bred for their spotted and white coat, but the more white they have, the more at risk they are of being blind.

To add to my previous comment, immune system problems are directly related to the white gene (Siamese cats have the same problem, and also suffer from Strabismus due to the white gene). Lethargia and depression are a result of Outbreeding Depression, i.e. the breeding of whites and oranges to strengthen the white tiger genome, not inbreed it. This is done for the health of the animals.

While I understand your love for animals and the message of this video, please get your facts right and cut down on the melodrama. Strabismus (cross-eyes) is directly linked to the white gene and is NOT a consequence of inbreeding. Also, the 80% mortality rate is no higher than for normal orange tigers.
Today, there is such a large number of white tigers in captivity that inbreeding is no longer necessary- nor was it the only way to produce whites.
Do your research, get your facts right.

These are my favorite animals, all though many die at an early age you have to see it as either way it was going to die, now yes it does suck that when they are born they have health issues, but when you think of it, many people are born with health isssues, its just life. Im not saying that I agree with the breeding, but these tigers are beautiful, and atleast they do get to live among us.

What about the very rare instances when white tigers are born in the wild? I don't think a group of people showed up and forced the tigers to breed to make sure that a white cub is born. I agree with you on the fact that the white tigers in zoos & circuses are produced by selective breeding, but there are rare occurences when a white tiger is born in the wild. Of course they all have one common ancestor! All animals are distantly related (very sdistantly in some cases). And that includes humans. We are related to tigers: our common ancestors is the first mammal. And it´s kind of ironic that the video says "inbred" and directly under that it says it´s a hybrid. @thew0od Even though there are laws to protect animals from inbreeding doesn't mean people stop doing it. >_> Otherwise, BigCatRescue wouldn't have their white tiger, or a lot of other places. (not saying bigcatrescue got the tiger this way). Also according to BigCatRescue and a few other animal sanctuaries the white gene is completely recessive still making it nearly impossible and rare. Although eye disorder is common, inbred white tigers still suffer other illness that a normal tiger less.

very educational videos you have. thank you for opening up my eyes. i grew up learning the white tigers did live in the wild but they were rare and that was that. i never knew anything behind it. i dont remember ever going to a zoo as a child so you can definitely count on me for keeping that up.

They probably get their information from people whose business is rescuing big cats. Not only them, but the Association to Prevent Cruelty to Animals and Humane Society also are in agreement as far as the cruelty in producing white tigers.

Thanks for putting this out there. If I were you I would steer clear of putting music in your stuff (at least pop songs) - the song in this makes me want to vomit and might make others not even watch it long enough to get anything out of it. So, next time keep that in mind and maybe skip the whatever you think adding some lame music might add... please.

Ok I love animals but you are griping about inbreeding. How do you think your favorite breed of dog came around? They inbred for years and years until they got the desired style of dog. Yet you dont here anyone complaing of their pure bred bulldogs ancestry. Yes, in a sense inbreeding is wrong, but if your in the buisness of entertainment for people then hey, it pays.

Actually, many animal groups point to the genetic problems that most "purebred" dogs have. The dog you use as an example, bulldogs, are among the dogs with the shortest lifespan and most genetic problems.

It wouldn't be inbreeding,it would be the start of a new species.Yes,they may have a few problems,but possibly,over the course of a few breeds,some of the inbred problems would be solved.Because as I am saying,even though it was caused by inbreeding,the mating of two of them would not be inbred mating.

@1888matt Ligers have a lot of health problem, I am not very familiar with zorses but I would assume that they have problems as well. And mating two white tigers would make all white cubs, but it would still be inbreeding, which would lead to health problems.

Very good points, and there are too many circumstances in the word where people see animals as creatures with no feelings, cant feel pain, and dont hurt the was humans do. I agree that they arent going to stop inbreeding just because we say to, which makes me wonder about how they can go on knowing what they do. Who kills the ones who arent as 'pretty' as the rest? I wonder how they can do that, and not feel anything.

you know the white bengal tigers are the same species as the regular tigers but it's not like we can stop the zoos you make this video to help stop it but you aren't helping at all the people see it but do nothing they don't go down to riot at the zoos, infact you probably aren't trying either the zoos aren't going to watch this and go " oh no we've been discovered a we have to stop" no they would continue what they do you basicly say that they should not exist but some live in the wild stop

i can understand myself the cruelty of inbreeding, i have a cat( burman ) who was not bred properly, and we were very lucky because my cat is not deformed, but regulary gets colds in his eyes :(

I've seen websites that show the horrible deformities that result from inbreeding Persian (domestic) cats for certain traits. Inbreeding is never a good thing. I hope that poor guy with the facial deformities is (or was) well taken care of. :-(

Yeah, I agree, inbreeding is always awful, no matter how you look at it :( Kinda sad what some people will do for money. The deformed tiger in this video is named Kenny. I'm not sure if he is still alive, but he was rescued by a sanctuary and had a happy life there :)

Unfortunately, yes it is. All captive white tigers can be traced to 1 tiger carrying the gene in India. This makes inbreeding necessary :(

I'm sorry but you're terribly wrong. If you actually research evolution that is not the case. Some people may choose to mate with their brothers/sisters or other family relitives but those are people. Animals are genetically engineered to NOT mate with a sibling, mother or father unless the species is at rist of extinction and they have no other chance to find a mate.

They do what they need to to survive. Yes I think the whole killing tigers who are not orange was wrong but other than that. Let's face it we can't make a tiger do shit it doesn't want to!
