Dirac was quite similar, in a lot of ways, to Tesla in terms of behaviour except he was not as extreme in his eccentricities and died relatively successfull.
Incidently, what we call Asperger's Syndrome now, could not really apply to Dirac's time. at the time if you were a physicist of Dirac's callibur you would have about 5 or 6 living people in the world at your level; you'd feel a sense of leadership in your field that would never be felt today where millions of people are now at his level.
@SpecterReflector I don't think there are millions of people at his level. Yes if you mean knowing what he knew. Not when it comes to creative intellectual power. People aren't getting smarter, just more educated. There are only a handful at the top at any time in history.
Since we are all subject to the statistics of genetics, as any population increases, the NUMBER of geniuses necessarily increases. So does the number of Morons. For example: republicans.
Great book : It talks about his child hood which his father spoke french only to him and his mother spoke english, this is where the parallel universe idea came from. He also created the perfect equation for string theory. His ideas live today and he was ahead of his time. I also experience string theory which I am a surfer and always am amazed on the physics and experiecne these waves and strings while surfing.. O.k. Good work...
I've just read this book on Dirac and I agree its a fantastic read. However, I hate the title. Whilst it does appear that Paul Dirac did not interact with others in a socially conventional way, this is of little significance when compared to his contributions to theoretical physics.
Although widely believed, Dirac did not have autism. It has been hypothesized by Simon Baron Cohen (Psychologist of Cambridge University) that Dirac had Asperger's syndrome,
Aspergers' is generally considered part of the autistic spectrum, although there are recognized differences between high functioning autism and Asperger's syndrome.
Dirac didn't have autism. It is hypothesized by Simon Baron Cohen (Cambridge Psychologist) that he had Asperger's syndrome, which is akin to autism. Individuals who suffer from this are "notoriously reticent, socially awkward, and are sometimes blessed with enormous calculational ability. Unlike autistic individuals they are functional in society and can hold productive jobs."
If I understand correctly didn't one of Paul Dirac's equations predict the positron? I am a math phobe and it just boggles my mind how these men could stare at equations and make deductions that predicted phenomenon that had not yet been observed.
I think "theoretical physicists" are "divine" and/or "insane". They are the modern prophets of our time. But in the end they are reliable prophets because either their hypothesis is confirmed or falsified and the 20th century has attested to their prescient minds. The prophets of old are failed prophets but the new "prophets" of science succeeded beyond a doubt.
My mother is a Learning Support specialist and I myself am Dyslexic. We often talk about the many people who (as special needs is young in our understanding of it) previously would have gone through their lives without being 'Diagnosed', I would imagine that that number would be relatively high in scientific and mathematical circles due to the skills required (esp. to excel at it re:Durac/autism).
Very nice review. Paul Dirac has always had my vote as the towering genius of physics, more so than Einstein, Fermi, Heisenberg, and others that are much better known. Or, as Pauli once observed, "If I understand Dirac correctly, his meaning is this: there is no God, and Dirac is his Prophet."

I've heard that Dirac was so "economic with his words" that his fellow scientists used to measure silence in units of Diracs....LoL!

I've heard of a genius physiatrist or maybe it was a mathematician, who took to wearing a woollen balaclava, but I can not remember who this was .

i didnt read this book because i read a review which said Farmelo claims he wasnt abused but just had autism
i think thats very unfair on Dirac

Out of curiosity Joanne do you think mathematics is discovered or created? I am currently reading "Is God a Mathematician".

I haven't read Livio's book yet. And frankly, I never gave this concept much thought, thus haven't found myself choosing one side or the other.

Isn't Pauli's quote just an incredible observation? I hope you will have a chance to read the book. It really is a marvelous work.
