Hi ozwalled, thanks for posting these paint.net vids, I'm trying to get two separate images and to sit them side by side to create one image, do you know how to do this? many thanks :-)
Thanks. I want to draw a simple normal distribution-type curve using the line/curve tool. I am used to MS Paint where I just pull the middle of the curve outwards but with the multiple control points on the curve line in Paint.Net I find it more difficult. Is it possible to have only one central control point on the curve line tool?
To everyone wondering how to get things you accedently x'd out click on "window" and then choose the thing you want back (ect. if you accedently remove the color panel click on window and click on color.)
Wow. What have I been doing for the past 10 years? I've been using paint for so long and all the shortcuts I wish it had are all in Paint.net. I just downloaded the program and if it is truly better than MS Paint, than I may never go back to MSP ever again.
@CrossoverGameReviews It is better in many ways. I have MS paint for Windows 7 and the issues I have with it it saves low res files or I would keep using it. I would load a high res one and it would reduce an no way to keep the high res.
It has stuff that paint net don't have and controls paint net don't have in the new version. Paint net you can get plug in so it can do what paint can't. I was going back and forth till I realized paint messes up the resolution and it is useless to me.
@BeautyOfLove1 reely my biggest wish for these programs is if all the top competing program companies were to just fuse together ideas and make one super program so we artists/editers/animaters wouldn't have to download all these different programs its a fun adventure but sometimes a hassle
Question: I need a software that is EXACTLY like MSpaint but draws smooth lines (like macromedia flash or smooth draw) ... any suggestions? (I don't use smooth draw because it has serious problems ... for example, you cannot insert pictures into it, or draw geometric shapes)
Hi thanks a lot for the paint.net tutorial. Would you have any section showing people how to do a eBook cover? Much appreciate your work and attention.
@MiiCar2 :D I'm really new to it, too, just starting to figure things out.
Just a few days ago, I found out how - click "Layers" at the toolbar at the top of your screen, then look at the options on the dropdown window until you find the "Import from File..." option. Click on that and find your picture, and what you want should appear in a new layer. From there you can do whatever you want.
^u^" Sorry if my explaining is bad - I've never been a good teacher.
D: I Worked So So So Hard On A Drawing And When I Finished I Deleted The Background to make it transparent and saved it but then i forgot to colore the eyes so i tryed to open the drawing and a error pooped out!
every time i try to shade my flat colors or apply a darker color it always replaces my orginal color. How can i do this with out messing up my colors on a drawing?
OMG! You saved my day! I've always had trouble finding the right skin tones for my manga drawings (they usually end up being yellow in the face or something like that) when I draw on my computer. I never thought of borrowing the skin tones before. You are my new hero!
Ok so say I had an images on the screen. What I'm asking is how do I fade the edges of an image until it matches whats else is around it. Sort of like blur it out to nothing but without the blur part. Sorry I'm really bad at articulating myself but I hope you understand this time. =)
The best way i know how to do this is faking it a bit -- Layer 1 is your "surrounding image" and Layer 2's the one we'll fade. Duplicate Layer 2 and select the lower Layer 2 and then Effect/Blurs/Unfoucs it and adjust the radius a bit. The Duplicate the layer several times to get a smoother brightness transition. From there, do some additional blurring on some of the duplicated layers, to get a larger gradient fade.
Ah-ha that is clever. Thanks very much. Its not such a good method for darker images such as fading black. It did the trick though. If you come across any better ways be sure to let me know. Thanks again, you're a star.
Possibly better: select a smaller part of the image with the Rectangle selection tool., and then Ctrl+I to invert that selection -- this will select the outer edge of your image you wish to fade. From there, you can Blur.
Since it'll make a hard line, what you could do is Blur again but with a lower blur value, by selecting and inverting the selection again, but with a smaller initial rectangular selection, thus blurring more of the image and hopefully smoothing the transition a bit.
select the image and then the gradient tool, select how you want the image to fade out, and then click transparency mode and have a play around with it, see what you can get...
if you dont get what i mean, go to screenfrog dot c0m / tutorials / paintnet and click the second video
The real way is to click the MORE button in your Colors window, and pull the Alpha-Transparency slider to the left.
What you can do as well though, is change transparency through your Layer window by double-clicking the appropriate layer, and sliding the Opacity slider to the left. DO NOTE that this will effect the opacity of the ENTIRE LAYER.
The short answer is that you'll open both images, copy one of them (Ctrl+A to select all, then Ctrl+C to copy), select the other image, create a new layer, and press Ctrl+V to paste the copied image into the new layer.
You may need to do some cropping, or erasing, or resizing, or other things to achieve the effects you desire, however.
its hard to explain but can you do a tutorial on how to change drastically the colours on images in block colours etc making it look very 80s and retro is that possible ??
what download did you use because you can download from 3 choices or does it matter?also does it have a desktop icon because i don't want to get in trouble for downloading something on my moms computer :P
The three choices on the official download page found via the link in the video information are mirror links, which all lead to the same file to download.
I'm pretty sure you have the option of having a desktop icon or not, but ultimately, ask your mother if you can download this. I can assure you that if you download it from the right place that it's a fairly small program and that it contains no virus, spyware or malware.
Very helpful tutorial serious. I'm a scrapbooker and my problem is with layers. When I try to add a second layer (that is intended to take up a quarter or so of the scrapbook page), it seems to completely take over the first layer. What do I do? Thanks so much!
I'm not QUITE sure I fully understand your question, but I'll take a stab at it anyway. If I'm way off, feel free to rephrase it and ask again.
When you create a new layer, it will be the same size as the biggest layer you have, which is the same as the canvas size. It will be transparent.
When you add an opaque graphic to the new layer, however, that graphic can take up as little or as much of that canvas space as you like, with the rest of the layer being transparent. See next comment too.
If you copied and pasted a graphic to your new layer and it was previously larger than your canvas or the same size, it will take up the entire new layer, yes. What you may want to do is resize your image before you paste it to the new layer, OR use the Move Selected Pixels tool on your new layer and drag the image a speck then drag (while holding shift to maintain aspect ratio) the corner nodes to manually resize the new layer image.
Hope that helps. If not, feel free to ask again. :)
Let's try again. I'm actually working on a blog background at the moment. The first step I did was to 'import image from file'. I sized it to 14.5 inches wide and 11 inches tall. Then I clicked on 'add new layer' and imported a second image from file. Rezied 2nd layer to be 7.5 inches wide, but comes up HUGE and my initial background is now 2x2 and I can't get it back to the orig size. Sorry to be difficult!! Any 'f'ree blog background' shows what I want as a final prod. Thanks!
Hey Ozwalled, I'm feeling like a rock star!! I somehow figured it out!! WOOHOO!!!! :) Don't ask, because I'm not really sure and my fingers are crossed that I can do it again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for being very patient! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
To keep a colour you add to the palette, you have to save your new palette. There's a button in the Colors window that looks like a folder. Click that, then "Save Palette As."

You can use a Wacom tablet, for sure, but you will NOT have pen pressure sensitivity enabled, unless you're working with Vista (so I'm told).
As for other tablet brands, I'm not sure if they work with it, but I would guess that they should work (though without the pressure sensitivity).

How do you round the corners of a pic? Also put a shadow behind a pic but not the whole pic? This is the second request. Thanks

To keep a colour you add to the palette, you have to save your new palette. There's a button in the Colors window that looks like a folder. Click that, then "Save Palette As."

Does your color that you placed on the color palate stay on the color palate when/if you close your art that you are working on??
