Sung like a real Italian. He has been listening well to the greats of the past. I have to agree that he is close to being the best voice around. Great tone and expression.
Alvarez is the best tenor in the world period! When someone makes a really stupid comment like 'not good' I wonder if the poster is trying to draw attention to himself, this is golden age tenor singing the kind of vocalism that can make opera such a special art form. The party that declared 'not good' should be listening to Paul Potts or some of the other frauds that think themselves Caruso's in their head. Bravo Alvarez ***** Thanks for posting
I actually always disliked this guy's voice, something about the timbre, as did most of my singer friends, but one of my tenor friends heard him live, and apparently he sounds 15000 times better in person. He said it was drop dead amazing and perfect in person. So these recordings apparently don't do him justice!
It's really beautiful, reminds one of di Stefano - such a natural voice. If only he didn't chop the phrases so often, but that's just a tiny blob compared to everything else.
@mdieterk well... i'd say that people just might miss the squillo in his low and mid registers here. he has plenti in his high and top registers, would be nice if the lower regions of his voice had some of the same brilliance, but i agree, this still is great singing, certainly considering the fact that this aria was actually written for a much lighter voice! definitely want to hear more of him.
Singing Carmen overtaxed his voice already, now he going to do Trovatore in the Met.? I wish him well but I think he not using his voice wisely. By the way this rendition of the Lamento is beautiful.!
13-09-2008 he was in Thessaloniki-Greece with Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchetsra. He was marvelous!!!Full of energy and and passion!!!Unbelievable!!!!
He was even better in Thessaloniki. I even broke into tears with his "lamento di Federico". He's incredible. Such a natural and free voice! Like the opera singers of the old times.
ohhh marcelo acabas de entrar en mi lista de tenores favoritos eres uno mas en la historia que habra cautivado a mucha gente con tu hermosa plena robusta pasional etc etc voz =)
Marcelo right at the top of his game. This is such a wonderful aria and he sings it to perfection..passion, purity and he makes it seem effortless. Bravissimo!
i would like to hear mr marcelo hit a high Bb, C, D, or even Eb like phelps can and hold it with ease. that is a rarity that many opera singers cannot do..if you disagree, prove it.
Oh, please! Great operatic singing is about style, breathing and MUSICIANSHIP; Phelps is a pop singer with a good voice. He has no idea how to sing opera.
Have a listen to Phelps singing O Holy Night, it is the epitome of bad taste. Also badly sung - listen to his breathing. And like all pop singers, he needs to have a microphone right up to his mouth. He could never fill an opera house!
Oh please anyone who compares Phelps with an operatic tenor knows nothing about operatic singing! His passion is not real either, it's all superficial sentimentality!
are you saying that the thing he sings about his fake? are you denying this man's love for christ? if so then you need to be checked out becuase the people who sing about their faith have the highest passion
his emotion is not real it's sugary sentimentality. Religion is based on superstition. What is 'highest' passion? People that have religious faith are deluded.
mdieterk "Have a listen to Phelps singing O Holy Night, it is the epitome of bad taste." I just watched that video and it was truly appalling. Disgraceful rendition of a beautiful song, so typical of pop singers today, not to mention his fake emotions throughout as if he was inspired by ol' JC himself-and then seeing the zombies in the audience was too much.
To me he's displayed richness of resources with higher qualities enough to place him at the first rank of grandi tenori these days. Qualities such as sensible phrasing, balanced dynamics, confident intonation, brightness of tone and sheer volume of sound I should mention. Bravo!
I'm always a bit hesitant in labeling, or agreeing, with blanket statements like "best." I think Mr. Alvarez may be regarded as "one of the best" of today's generation but I wouldn't be to quick to place a title on him yet. I would recommend a tour of grandi-tenori (dot com) and explore the 'Up-and-Coming' list.
I know a few conductors who feel Marcelo is not as good as he once was for some reason, but they say he sings off of his voice, I respect your opinion though, I love his high notes myself just not the rest of his voice and the quality. Nothing like Corelli or Domingo though...
You obviously don't connect with Alvarez, because you comment only on his voice; this is such a wonderful bit of singing because of the phrasing, emotion, intelligence, and the dramatic structure he frames the piece in. This is what I meant when I compared his singing (not his voice!) with Corelli and Domingo.
and have you ever heard Villazon live? His voice at many occasions has not lived up to what a House the size of the Bastille Opera's expects from tenors. There is no comparison to be made technically or vocally.Hearing Villazon live was a real disappointment for me..which is what happens when we rely only on recordings that are polished to perefction...
Listen to Mario Lanza's version...breathtaking, absolutely breathtaking...
