Great video-put together nicely! And fantastic music! I look forward to more of these from you! Is that you, David Tanner at the end? No wonder why you could hold the camera steady for so long. Yummy
up past Halsey school I lived at 979 Albany Street with my Mom, Dad and brother. Upstairs my Mo's sister and her family lived. Back then more families seemed to be a lot closer and Grandma always lived with someone :-) The good old days! On the corner of Albany and Baccus street was a great corner store called "Milton's Grocery." It was great having a store so close to home. There was also another one Called "Carl's Grocery Market" back past Swan Street. We got out lunchmeat there.
During a transition we had to live at Steinmets homes for a couple of months. It was wayy nice back then. Unbelievable what it has become now. A dumping ground for people on welfare.
On the corner of Albany & Stanley was MY school, Halsey School! Mrs. Breslin was my K teacher, Mrs. Simkins was first grade, Mrs Lyons was second and Mrs dunn was my 3rd grade teacher. Im going back 55 years LOL After that I transferred to Grout Park School and Mrs Carmody was my teacher. Grout had a great balcony off the Library and the class very often was allowed to sit out there and read, that was pretty nice.
Accross from Henry's was a bar and next to that just about was the Albany Street Fire House. Great place to stop in for a drink or go potty LOL I forgot to mentin back down by Commanzo's was the Old Rollerskating Hall. We skated there every sunday. Was that the Paradise Hall? Im drawing a blank Great hang out for kids. Then came along "the Roller Rama" in Rotterdam Kinda put Paradise out of business. Past the fire house was Paramount Bowling Alley. Covered live on channel 6 TV I believe.
That was right there at Hulett Street. Accross the street was a drugstore, I forget the name. Then a resturant and then Commanzo's Laundry and shoe repair right on the corner. Accross from that was the good old A&P Market. Mary Navin was one of the cashieres there. oh how I loved the smell of their coffee being ground. Farther up on the right was the Albany Street Pork Store. Their meets were delish! Farther up on the right was Henry's Cycle Shop! I got more than one bike there in my life :-)
People were so different back then. Everyone knew everyone. Oh I forgot, we did eat somewhere else once in a while, at the White Tower!!! Mrs. Burke was the waitress. Ver nice lady. I know her daughter Barbara to this day. More nice people LOL Just up the street from New Way on the otherside was "The American Theater." Its NOW American Electric. They bought it when the theater went out of business. Smaller place but still nice to go see a movie close to home. Right near Davids Dept. Store.
We ate there alot. All the kids wanted to eat there or Woolworths and no where else LOL We always got treated right at the New Way. It didnt hurt that Mom & Dad were best of friends with Irene and Johnny Stathis (owners) We always got more than we could eat. All the police used to stop there for lunch and it was a busy place but friendly and just really popular. I lost my money once and everyone was ordering. Irene said whats wrong? I said no money. She brought me 2 hotdogs with everything.
It was always cheaper to catch a matinee & the good thing about that was we had a lot of time to go into Wallaces or SS Kressge's store. I sure miss those stores. On the way home we often stopped at St. Josephs. From there we would walk past the court house and make our way up Albany St. and stop in to the "New Way Lunch." Johnny Stathis owned that place. I loved him and his wife. They were my Dads best friends. The best hot dog sauce in the neighborhood.
If we were early there would be someone playing "Old Goldie" and boy she sounded GREAT! We would sit back in the comfy seats and stare up at the beautiful ceiling. Wonderful memories of Proctors. Before the movie we bought the usual...Ju-Ju Bees, Goobers & Raisinettes. Popcorn with PLENTY of BUTTER & a wad of napkins LOL oh, always a soda too. After the movie we would walk accross the street to "Fanny Farmer" candies. Bring a little something home for Mom. so MANT great stores downtown.
We all had to get out bag of peanuts. THEN, on to Carl Co. to the candy counter to get Black Licorice Pipes to chew on. Out the side door into Proctors arcade & stand in line to get out tickets. We would BEG to sit in the Balcony LOL We knew the guy who took your tickets, he would let us go up if we promised to keep it quiet. The Balcony was usually only open if a MAJOR movie release was going on. We were good always thankful for the oportunity to sit up there. Sometimes if we were early.(Next)
Just up from Bi-Mor was the german resturant...ALWAYS full! Great food. Robinson's furniture next door. Accross the street was the State theater which we went to alot when Proctors didnt have what we were interested in which wasnt very often LOL We preferred Proctors. 6 of us every saturday walked from home to downtown. Straight to Woolworth's for Cheeseburger, fries and a coke. Shop around a bit. Get our pictures taken in the photo booth up front and then cross the street to Mr. Peanuts!
Why do you do this to me? YOU show these videos and then I cant shut the heck up! LOL Lots to be said about the Mont Pleasant area. Gonna have to do an interview with those 2 ladies! The are a mountain of information on that area as well. I used to love to eat at the diner there on Crane Street when it was in its hay day. Hot Dogs with tons of meat sauce LOL and french fries. Boy my kids thought that was a treat to eat there :-) Dont get me going about Mont Pleasant LOL
Named for Vicki Grigas And Rosanne Magagnos who STILL own and run that same shop in the same building with Ray Zanta who still runs his Barber shop there. Im guessing but I think Rosie has worked there over 40 years but I will ask and correct myself, it may be more or a couple less. I worked with Rose ONE DAY a weel for several years while my kids were small. I went on to become a school bus driver for Niskayuna Schools and did hair on the weekends. I drove bus for over 26 years.
Farther up a block was the Bi-Mor Army/Navy. Mom took brother there for his heavy duty winter clothes, Dad got his work pants there. Mom took me accross the street to Mr. James for my FIRST ever beauty parlor experience! I knew THEN Id grow up and become a hairdresser one day and I DID! Farther up State On Broadway I attended "The Royal Barber & Beauty School." My brothers wife also attended and she was the owner of "Annette Maries Salon" on Crane Street which later became "The Victorian Rose."
Others in line fell away and left. I remember being shocked they didnt realize they were only getting paid for the gold, a good price back then BUT a total loss on the jewels therein. Unbelievable!!
NEVER thinking to remove the diamonds or other jewels before selling the items they brought there. What a rip off. I told one man "Your so proud you got $500 dollars for all that gold but the diamonds and emeralds and rubys you left in the bracelets was worth 15 times what they paid you for the gold." OMG he had a fit and tried to buy it back but it was a done deal.
Coming into Sch'tdy just after the first light past the bus station was the old Gold exchange. I remember when Sch'tdy had its gold rush and everyone needed money so many people sold their gold jewelery.
Ive stood in Proctors many times waiting for a bus, out of the sun or out of the rain. People everywhere, milling all about. Crowded from morning until night. Shoppers, movie goers or couples out on the town. Always something going on in Schenectady! From The Silver Diner on Erie Blvd. to all the finest resturants.
Who doesnt like getting a hot dog or cheeseburger there? Plus the water ski show everynight all summer long? ahhh, the OLD Hotel which is now Sch'tdy Community College. Id drive by there at night with my Dad and we'd see the reporters from the Gazette drinking at the bar there on the right corner of the building closest to the Bridge side of the old Hotel. That place has a history all its own! Honestly I wish you could crawl down the street slower LOL So much to talk about!
Love the music on the Victor Talking Machine....
