  • epica is about as far from goth music as you can possibly get..

  • I would like to point out this song's title is "Martyr of the Free Word", not "Martyr of the Free World". It's a song about freedom of speech, not slavery!

One of my favourites by Epica, though. :D

  • Good :D

  • I love this song..*-*

  • Isn't this a wicked song, usually I don't appreciate the grunting as much but for some reason the grunting parts make this song so much more epic. Thanks for the upload!

  • haha unlucky u, ur missing out alot of fun in metal music by not liking grunts

  • I should have been more specific. It depends who it is grunting I guess. I like heaps of grunting/growling bands like dimmu borgir, chimaira, fear factory, arch enemy etc i guess its moreso that I listen to epica moreso for the lead vocals so its the grunts in epica i dont usually like as much. But yeah grunting makes many bands awesome I know lol

  • what the hell man, i hate black metal grunts, except Dani Filth's, but gothic vocals are always the best, listen to the rest of my uploads all u'll get me ;)

  • yer i agree danis a wicked vocalist, don't know how he still has a voice lol

  • Uh? Gothic metal does not have there own way for grunting. The Grunts came from Hardcore music. Then when the early Death Metal bands came around they gave brith to the death grunt in metal music. Black metal is using screams and Dani Filth is a very poor example of black metal screams. Marks voice here is closer to Opeth and Epica has nothing to do with the Goth scene.

  • Nope, but the Goth style influences the vocalist to use a certain grunt i dont usually find in all songs.

It did came from hardcore, but that doesnt mean it's not different ;) And i use Dani Filth as an example because i only listen to Cradle of Filth in Black metal.

And Epica DOES sing goth metal, and weather u like it or not, the proof is in wikipedia.

  • Any one can edit wikipedia to say anything. Don't take that as fact. And There is only one kind of grunt. It started in Hardcore and moved to Death Metal. And that would be the Death grunt. There is not fucking goth grunt. You are either using a Death grunt/growl or a black metal scream thats it. And Epica has jack and shit to do with Goth Metal. There songs are about Mayan Philosophy/Legend, social issues, fundamentalism, and Politics.

  • I mean you do know this song is about a guy who likes to take aim at Islam right? Semblance of Liberty is about Greed ie money. It why they have the speech from Bush saying "read my lips." Cry for the moon is all about Catholic priests who abused children. Façade of Reality is about 9/11. And Seif al Din" is about Islamic fundamentalism. Yeah those are such Gothic themes they are using.

  • But hey if go on and keep believeing it's all Gothic. Even though ever song Epica has made has nothing to do with Goths. I mean really what makes Fools of Damnation Goth? Goth metal bands don't have songs like Epica do.

  • i've always thought growls and grunts have been around since the 80s and 90s from all the death metal and black metal bands. Hardcore bands from what i thought are all recent bands and they have made up the death grunt basically addign in the growls from death metal but they use their own different style in playing. yea they use growls and grunts but black and death metal have been using growls and grunts for years. Epica they do play a goth/symphonic metal style.

  • @G0thKyd Wikipedia is a place where everyone can write content into. Many people think that Epica is Gothic Metal, as did I when I started to listen it. But in fact Epica is Symphonic Metal, like Nightwish were.

  • @ProDexorite I like the use of past tense there. Nightwish were Symphonic Metal. Any idea what they are now?

And yeah, Epica is Symphonic no Gothic

  • @RainingUtopiaEchoes6 New Nightwish is something that I hate most... That swedish pop-wh**e ruined the whole band, thats for sure.

  • i love this song!

  • Thank you.
