I think that the problem with movies adapted from manga is that directors and writers try to adapt them to wider audience while stuffing too much material into a two hour film.
This movie avoided that and became a standalone story that you could follow from the start to the end, because it's not some elitist bullshit (badly) made just for fans, it's a retelling of a classic story. It's simple, neat, nice and it works.
This movie is actually pretty good, the story is nicely written and consistent, the characters are well-rounded and get a fair share of development
The problem isn't in the movie, the problem is the rabid fans that can't stop comparing it to the original manga series.
Of course it's different, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad. Take a look at The Last Airbender, it tried to follow it's base material so much that it forgot to get a soul in the process.

This is one of those few movies with en ensemble which is truly an all star cast working to the best of their powers namely because actors like this one were not that well known at the time they were working on this film and took advantage of their opportunity at fame. I just saw this vide yesterday and I've seen it 3 times now. My 2 year old doesn't watch English movies but he did say, "Wow" when Astro Boy was flying in some scenes that caught his eye. I love this movie!

This movie was hilarious. Too bad they had to ruin it with the most ridiculously moronic villain ever created, just so they call pull off a "Hey look here, we got a villain based on Dubya!" for extra ratings.
And they kinda ruined the epilogue with that "can you spare some of the blue stuff" talk. It would've been much more awesome if everyone just keeps their mouth shot
