Dear TheTzdope: NBC did show lots of regular-season games originating from or involving the New York teams, but WNBC-4 didn't carry those because the Mets' local TV rights belonged to WOR-9 and the Yankees' belonged to WPIX-11. An out-of-town game was carried on Ch. 4 instead. In addition, the NBC sports crew was at Shea for most of the Jets' games when they were the AFL/AFC broadcaster. Chs. 4 & 9 jointly broadcast the Mets' appearances in the '69/'73 NLCS and World Series.
@abqwriter IIRC, NBC first used the CF shot for the 1957 World Series. Well into the '70s, though, they would alternate the CF camera with the more traditional view from high above home plate as seen in this clip. (It's also possible that, since this was the backup game, they didn't have as many cameras available.)
A rare weekend Opening Day for baseball, due to the strike that year. Kind of amusing to see Bowie Kuhn wearing an overcoat, something he would deem unnecessary a few years later when attending frigid WS night games. ;-)
That's Maury Wills working with Jim Simpson. This must have been NBC's backup game that day; I wonder where Gowdy and Kubek were?
@NJTank It was in early April. Spring training was interrupted by the strike, Leaving the Hodges and his coaches with nothing to do. They decided to play golf at a West Palm Beach club where they were guests. The foursome was Hodges, Berra and 2 other Met coaches, It was there that Hodges collapsed and died instantly of his 2nd heart attack. The Mets management asked the coaches who they would recommend to take over and the other 3 all said "Yogi".
Thanks for posting....these are hard to find. Let's hope the MLB Advanced Media goons don't take it down. They don't want us seeing these "forbidden" classics.
Whoo! I'm back there on that Saturday. It was just after the first baseball strike was settled. My world was SO much different! I was following baseball, and I didn't care what Richard Nixon was doing.
Where did you get this footage? This and the Reggie vs Tiant clips are incredible. I'm always on the hunt for vintage baseball games from the 60's and 70's.
this was during the time when a starting pitcher was embarrassed to be taken out late in a game.

This was the back up game. Dodgers at Reds was the primary game of the week, and was shortened by rain. Frank Robinson's first game with Dodgers.

When did NBC start using center field camaras for their broadcasts? This looks like the set up they used for the 1956 Series..

Amazing as this sounds to the modern baseball fan, the Pirates came into this opening day as the defending world champions
