I remember that as a a child myself in the 1970s. Our neighbors had two little boys and they watched it with us, I remember the chimes. This was the early 1970s too.
IF I HEARD THIS MUSIC LATE AT NIGHT AND HOMEALONE TOO. I WOULD FREAKOUT AND TURN MY VIDEO GAME CONSOLES ON VOLUME 100 FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS THEN JUST TO GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD THEN. The other one with the navy blue background with the sesame street ending music doesn'r bug me as much as the funky chimes one does.
@isolationlogo Just wondering, but did the "This is a test! This station is conduct a test of the Emergency Broadcast System, this is only a test! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This has just been a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The attention signal you just heard . . . [I forget this part] . . . by alerting this TV station and the local authorities in the event of an actual emergency. This concludes our test of the Emergency Broadcast System!
Also, I'm glad I'm not alone. I used to dread the Funky Chimes, though today, it doesn't scare me at all. Still, when the EAS comes on radio or TV stations, and IT'S USUALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREAKIN' NIGHT, I totally get scared, and turn on every light, radio, and TV in the house at full volume. Don't ask, I just do. I wonder what would happen if they all did the test at the same time? I think I'd explode and die.
I remember seeing this when watching Sesame Street on CBC in the late 70's. Then they would continue the music followed by a picture of Big Bird with Sesame Street below him.
when this came on I used to get up and dance around in my jammies by dry humping around the room and i would get in trouble because my sister would yell and tell my dad i was 'overstimulated' and i would have to go to my room and calm down and come out when i was more 'under control.' It was the song...not my fault.
@Will87 Jim Henson passed away in 1990 and after that Sesame Street started to change drastically. I stopped watching it in around 1991/1992. The theme music changed in 1992.
@djbrotherson On MF Doom's album Mm.. Food, the track is called "Kookies." Here is the entry from wikipedia:
The 2004 "Kookies" iteration contains samples from the Sesame Street closing credits theme, also known as the Funky Chimes. The 2007 version has a different beat.
i used to throw stuffed animals at the tv when this came on becuase i hated seeing end credits back then...that was back when sesame street was on 4X a day and the next visit to the children's television workshop was only 2 hours away...that felt like forever back then...
Notice the funky chimes melody(3 notes) is the same as the first three melody notes of "Sunny Days". Just sing "sun----ny days" where the chimes are and it'll make sense.
@jtomally9681 me too and the music is fine but the logo is creepy also when they added the voice ...saying "This Is PBS" I freaking cry or hide until it left the screen ... !! because i thought that logo would attack me or swallow me whole ...*shutters* eek lol
Anyone remember the catchy Afro-Cuban music from a sponsorship that came on after the Sesame Street credits? Just like this track, I cannot find the title of the song. Haven't been able to figure it out, and I don't know if I ever will.
@12guitdown Wow! Here's the first response about that song! Cool! It's out there, somewhere. This theme in the end, along with that mysterious Afro-Cuban themed song during the sponsorship commercial, must have been produced by some highly talented musicians. It's hard to find rhythms like this today. Maybe PBS has a listing of credits for all their aired music?
@agodinez791 Was it mostly a bassline that gradually ascended....and halfway throught the loop the notes kinda came back down over & over? If so, I've been looking for that 1 too.
But it says '85 right in the credits! (Also I was born in '84 and remember this ending... but Sesame Street Canada had a few extra Canadian Muppets, so maybe we kept the old ending longer?)
The funky chimes actually used to scare me because when I was real young I did not know what funk and disco were. The monster disco scenes scared me for the same reason. If you're two and you're used to hearing crunchy folk music by Raffi, it can sound odd and freaky. Now that I'm an adult I know disco and funk and LOVE it, so the chimes are awesome to listen to now!
@baul104 I remember it use to scare me because I knew what was going to be coming right after the credits. The damn !984 PBS logo that gave me night terrors for such a long time. Now I laugh at myself. lol
Ever since my Dad tried to force me to look at this logo at age 3 thinking it would help me get over the fear fast, I was scared to hell over this logo until I was almost an adult. lol
The first time I saw the 1984 PBS logo I hide in my Dad's lap. The second time it came on, my Dad's theory to get my fear away fast pretty much backfired. lol.
TRUE STORY! I used to cry whenever I heard this but only because I knew that the show was over. Still makes me a little sad--but I still love it. Miss those days!
I'm with everybody on this one. When I was little I used to have horrible nightmares of this song when I was in the dark at night. Sure, call me a wuss but you would think they know better than to use the bells 'that sound like you're in hell....'
That is how I felt too. LOL. But it was the 70's when these style of closing credits and music score was composed and it carried on thru the 80's and early 90's. I am with you though 100%!!!
Yes, I also felt the same way. Even though I thought this funky chimes music was a little nice, according to me, I thought this music didn't sound like music that anyone can hum too since it sounds like music from a saxophone and a xylophone. However, presently, I know that the end credits are used with cardboard buildings with people and muppets dancing in front of the cardboard buildings and the Sesame Street music is being played on a flute which sounds like a sweet music to hum too.
I'm probably gonna sound really strange when I say this (And now that I think about it, it really is strange, LOL.) but this song used to freak me out as a little kid who used to watch Sesame Street all the time as a little kid in the '80s. (Then again, a lot of things used to freak me out when I was little, LOL.)
I wouldn't allow my parents to change the channel or take me anywhere until Sesame Street was over and this song had played because I absolutely had to dance to it!
Awesome! That tune is so memorable! I used to watch it on CBC in Canada as a kid and remember seeing Big Bird sitting on a stool next to a giant CBC logo at the end. It was weird, but cool...
DOOM is one of the most complex lyricists ever. If you don't even know what a multi is, don't even talk. He can make a whole sentence rhyme....every word, a different rhyme to the word in the last sentence in order....
Yes, I do hate idiots, you just joined that crowd! RAP is CRAP with a silent C! Especially morons like MF Doom. If they had talent they'd make their OWN music for background, not rape an old song and ruin it like he did to this music..... tard.

hahaha smackerjacked i agree!! no originality! except i go the source of stealing: all them rockers stealing the blues and then calling it rock n roll: name em the stones? thieves beatles? thieves zepplin? thieves NAME EM i agree! where is the originality in music son?! hahahah
DOOM's lyrics take more time and complexity to put together than any other lyricist of another genre.
I love it for it's lyricism. If you'd rather hear music because of the talent in the singer, or the talent in the musician that makes the instrumental, then by all means go ahead.
Don't insult what you do not understand. Like I said, DOOM's lyrics are the most complex I've ever heard. The beautiful thing is....
It's something I can prove. Name a song with more complex lyrical rhyme schemes.
OMG I thought I was the only one that did that! Actually I did jumping jacks, LOL. I felt like you needed to move when this came on. Even now I find my leg bouncing when the music starts.
@RedSlash78 Is this from Episode 2040? Because if so, then it's actually season 16 (ep first aired on March 1, 1985, which would make it a Season 16 ep).

disco funk then pbs split id ROFL homestar viacom vs youtube youtube poop pbs apple computers chicken noodle soup guitar hero rap hitler cooking mama splitz mario anime phead boat michel jackson
Now this is the Friday ending theme I grew up with. I always thought that the music sounded like it was from another era, but I used to boogie down to it anyways!!
I've been scouring the net for this shit. Correct me if I am wrong though, weren't there little kids like sliding down some humungous 'slide' or something with these credits? Perhaps my Sesame Street memories are all melting into one season..But I think i'm right. If anybody knows or better yet can find it-let me know. Thanks for posting this anyway...Anybody remember the Hot Fudge Show?
I miss Sesame Street when it was aimed more at the inner city population. It had more soul back then and was a joy to watch. Sadly, I can't stand to watch it anymore and my children don't like it either. It seems like the "soul" has been ripped right out of the show and it's not much different than any other show on television nowadays.
You kind of nailed it. That urban feeling has definitely evaporated out of the show. It happened gradually during the 90s, especially later in the decade.
And you're right, what we're left with is a show that, while still a nice kids' show, doesn't feel particularly unique anymore. It has the same generic graphics and overall tone of many other kids' shows.
i couldnt wait for Seasame Street to end so we could get up and dance to the chimes at the end. I wonder if there is an extended version of this song. IT"S SHAG-A-DELIC
I loved WTTW as a kid! Back when CTW had S.S,3-2-1 Contact and The Electric Company! I even used to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus and Wall Street Week (I loved the opening theme music.) Channel 11 was the best during the '70's and '80's.
Well, it WAS from the 70s, so I guess it would sound sort of disco-ish (though didn't disco take off later in the decade?)
This ending music was used for exactly 20 years---1972 to 1992. So PLENTY of kids heard it every morning, and it's stuck somewhere in these now 20 to 40-year-olds' subconscious minds. XD
I remember that as a a child myself in the 1970s. Our neighbors had two little boys and they watched it with us, I remember the chimes. This was the early 1970s too.

MF Doom used this song as a sample to his song "Kookies."
LOL, look it up!!
the212soul 3 years ago 2
That's true!
Though when Rhymesayers re-released the CD they had an alternate version of Kookies. I guess they couldn't clear the sample.

Today's word is "Cannabis" children, can you spell CANNABIS? lol
5stringofFernandoSor 3 years ago
You kind of nailed it. That urban feeling has definitely evaporated out of the show. It happened gradually during the 90s, especially later in the decade.
And you're right, what we're left with is a show that, while still a nice kids' show, doesn't feel particularly unique anymore. It has the same generic graphics and overall tone of many other kids' shows.
Too bad.

The Electric Company had lots of soul back in the days too. The music on there was just too funky for one person to stand! I loved it!

i couldnt wait for Seasame Street to end so we could get up and dance to the chimes at the end. I wonder if there is an extended version of this song. IT"S SHAG-A-DELIC

I had completely forgotten about those chimes. HA! Now I remember hearing that and thinking it was a good ending song for Sesame street.

"Funding for Sesame Street is provided in part by subscribers of Channel 11." (WTTW 11 is PBS affiliate in the Chicagoland area.)
powerpuffsouthpark 3 years ago
I loved WTTW as a kid! Back when CTW had S.S,3-2-1 Contact and The Electric Company! I even used to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus and Wall Street Week (I loved the opening theme music.) Channel 11 was the best during the '70's and '80's.

Reminds me of disco for some reason...
EthanoftheInternet 3 years ago
It probably inspired M Bison's theme music in Street Fighter 2. sesame street fighter?
2thpic 3 years ago
Well, it WAS from the 70s, so I guess it would sound sort of disco-ish (though didn't disco take off later in the decade?)
This ending music was used for exactly 20 years---1972 to 1992. So PLENTY of kids heard it every morning, and it's stuck somewhere in these now 20 to 40-year-olds' subconscious minds. XD
