  • I remember that as a a child myself in the 1970s. Our neighbors had two little boys and they watched it with us, I remember the chimes. This was the early 1970s too.

  • @newtwo101 Hmm? Why? They're groovy.

  • IF I HEARD THIS MUSIC LATE AT NIGHT AND HOMEALONE TOO. I WOULD FREAKOUT AND TURN MY VIDEO GAME CONSOLES ON VOLUME 100 FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS THEN JUST TO GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD THEN. The other one with the navy blue background with the sesame street ending music doesn'r bug me as much as the funky chimes one does.

  • LOL, i remember this! good times!

  • I recall this ending music being, uh, "meaner" and more brutal.

  • @coffee4binky

You're not alone - I also remember it being very brash. It used to scare me.

  • @isolationlogo Just wondering, but did the "This is a test! This station is conduct a test of the Emergency Broadcast System, this is only a test! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This has just been a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The attention signal you just heard . . . [I forget this part] . . . by alerting this TV station and the local authorities in the event of an actual emergency. This concludes our test of the Emergency Broadcast System!

  • Also, I'm glad I'm not alone. I used to dread the Funky Chimes, though today, it doesn't scare me at all. Still, when the EAS comes on radio or TV stations, and IT'S USUALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREAKIN' NIGHT, I totally get scared, and turn on every light, radio, and TV in the house at full volume. Don't ask, I just do. I wonder what would happen if they all did the test at the same time? I think I'd explode and die.

  • now who was the idiot who mixed up tubular bells with a saxaphone?

  • who is the one tool that did not like this, shame on you.

  • I remember seeing this when watching Sesame Street on CBC in the late 70's. Then they would continue the music followed by a picture of Big Bird with Sesame Street below him.

  • That doesn't sound like 1985, it sounds like 1973!

  • That doesn't sound like 1984, it sounds like 1973!

  • Sounds a bit like the "Futurama" theme. :-P

  • @slmacph LOL I agree.

  • when this came on I used to get up and dance around in my jammies by dry humping around the room and i would get in trouble because my sister would yell and tell my dad i was 'overstimulated' and i would have to go to my room and calm down and come out when i was more 'under control.' It was the song...not my fault.

  • Ya! man i miss those days...that kicks ass.

  • ya! man...,i miss those days...that kicks ass.

  • Oh man!! I remembered this song!! I wish Sesame Street still played it now and days...

  • This song is funky, man I love this song

  • hehehehe i remember this as it marked the time had to pick up my snack and go to (half-day) kindergarten!!! nostalgia!

  • Funky!!!

  • When did they stop using this ending? I am 23 and remember it from the early 90's unless I was watching repeats.

  • @Will87 I Would say by 1992 or 1993

  • @Will87 Jim Henson passed away in 1990 and after that Sesame Street started to change drastically. I stopped watching it in around 1991/1992. The theme music changed in 1992.

  • Should've kept this instead of a dull ending!

  • 0:01-0:10- Your local public televsion station through the Public Brodcasting Service!

  • Propz to MF Doom for sampling this..

  • @fbebeats whats the track called? I was just thinking of doing the same thing!

  • @djbrotherson On MF Doom's album Mm.. Food, the track is called "Kookies." Here is the entry from wikipedia:

The 2004 "Kookies" iteration contains samples from the Sesame Street closing credits theme, also known as the Funky Chimes. The 2007 version has a different beat.

  • That ending song will never leave my memory.

  • i used to throw stuffed animals at the tv when this came on becuase i hated seeing end credits back then...that was back when sesame street was on 4X a day and the next visit to the children's television workshop was only 2 hours away...that felt like forever back then...

  • Whenever I heard this music after "Sesame Street," I thought, "What in the world does this have to do with Sesame Street?"

  • KOOKIES

  • I thought " what is the most obscure thing I could look up?" I can't believe this is on here. Thanks for the memories

  • I prefer the 1970s PBS logo. :)

  • This is the FUNKIEST theme song I've ever heard.. I even liked it as a kid..

  • The PBS Logo from the 1970s to me is more vintage. Then again, I was born in the 70s. Gee, I'm old.

  • I loved the funky chimes!!! Takes me back to being a kid!!!

  • The best ending, so cool and jazzy and all of 7 yrs. old!...=)

  • I use to fear this 1984 logo to death as a kid.

  • @jtomally9681 OMG me to

  • @jtomally9681 OMG me to

  • @jtomally9681 me too and the music is fine but the logo is creepy also when they added the voice ...saying "This Is PBS" I freaking cry or hide until it left the screen ... !! because i thought that logo would attack me or swallow me whole ...*shutters* eek lol

  • Anyone remember the catchy Afro-Cuban music from a sponsorship that came on after the Sesame Street credits? Just like this track, I cannot find the title of the song. Haven't been able to figure it out, and I don't know if I ever will.

  • @agodinez791 Yes I do remember it but can't remember how it goes. I wanna to hear it again.

    Peace.

  • @12guitdown Wow! Here's the first response about that song! Cool! It's out there, somewhere. This theme in the end, along with that mysterious Afro-Cuban themed song during the sponsorship commercial, must have been produced by some highly talented musicians. It's hard to find rhythms like this today. Maybe PBS has a listing of credits for all their aired music?

  • @agodinez791 Was it mostly a bassline that gradually ascended....and halfway throught the loop the notes kinda came back down over & over? If so, I've been looking for that 1 too.

  • the pbs logo looks like some1 is curling their hand to their face.

the bottom part is the arm...

the middle part is the curving palm...

    and

the top part is the fingers...

    lol

  • it looks (vaguely) like PBS is flipping someone off to me...

  • But it says '85 right in the credits! (Also I was born in '84 and remember this ending... but Sesame Street Canada had a few extra Canadian Muppets, so maybe we kept the old ending longer?)

  • I sue that on my TV station with the Bells on our bumper.

  • The funky chimes actually used to scare me because when I was real young I did not know what funk and disco were. The monster disco scenes scared me for the same reason. If you're two and you're used to hearing crunchy folk music by Raffi, it can sound odd and freaky. Now that I'm an adult I know disco and funk and LOVE it, so the chimes are awesome to listen to now!

  • I remember seeing this message with the funky chimes music back when as a lad... This wasn't seen on TV ever since...

  • @baul104 I remember it use to scare me because I knew what was going to be coming right after the credits. The damn !984 PBS logo that gave me night terrors for such a long time. Now I laugh at myself. lol

  • Well, this didn't scare me because I didn't really care about it too much, but the music is pretty catchy...

  • Ever since my Dad tried to force me to look at this logo at age 3 thinking it would help me get over the fear fast, I was scared to hell over this logo until I was almost an adult. lol

  • My mother didn't force me to look at this logo because I wanted to see it so I won't get frighented by it...

  • The first time I saw the 1984 PBS logo I hide in my Dad's lap. The second time it came on, my Dad's theory to get my fear away fast pretty much backfired. lol.

  • TRUE STORY! I used to cry whenever I heard this but only because I knew that the show was over. Still makes me a little sad--but I still love it. Miss those days!

  • @ESD3X Amen

  • I'm with everybody on this one. When I was little I used to have horrible nightmares of this song when I was in the dark at night. Sure, call me a wuss but you would think they know better than to use the bells 'that sound like you're in hell....'

  • this ending gave me creeps when i was a little kid

  • This is so addicting ,but scary ,too. I mean couldn't they make the words less creepy or old fashioned

  • That is how I felt too. LOL. But it was the 70's when these style of closing credits and music score was composed and it carried on thru the 80's and early 90's. I am with you though 100%!!!

  • This ending use to make me feel a litte bit uncomfortable.

  • I felt the same way about these credits and music along with "Electric Company".

  • Yes, I also felt the same way. Even though I thought this funky chimes music was a little nice, according to me, I thought this music didn't sound like music that anyone can hum too since it sounds like music from a saxophone and a xylophone. However, presently, I know that the end credits are used with cardboard buildings with people and muppets dancing in front of the cardboard buildings and the Sesame Street music is being played on a flute which sounds like a sweet music to hum too.

  • OMG, that just THREW me back into the 80's! :) Man, do i feel old! I used to LOVE that part. Totally forgot about it till i stumbled upon this.

  • Me too. I grew up on Sesame Street. Its funny how the little things like that will jog your memory.

  • @ECOOL76 I know right? :)

  • I'm probably gonna sound really strange when I say this (And now that I think about it, it really is strange, LOL.) but this song used to freak me out as a little kid who used to watch Sesame Street all the time as a little kid in the '80s. (Then again, a lot of things used to freak me out when I was little, LOL.)

  • That's not strange, I was the same way (that that song freaked me out)

  • I could cry...I want to go back to being a kid...AND to the 70's.

  • yes, i got this as a ringtone a few weeks ago.

    i love it!

  • Where did you find Funky Chimes as a ringtone?

  • use polderbits and save as an mp3

  • gow did you do that?

  • phonezoo has the ring tone

  • does anyone have this as a ringtone yet?

  • I wouldn't allow my parents to change the channel or take me anywhere until Sesame Street was over and this song had played because I absolutely had to dance to it!

  • FUNKAY !!!! i luv this,its no wonder im the adult I am 2day !!!!

  • Makes me nostalgic for the 80's... and being a kid... remember having so much hope in the world? Then we all grew up...

  • As someone who grew up in the 80s (born in '73) I couldn't have said it better!

  • @Diosdebaca ...And everything started to suck.

  • @Diosdebaca yes but that child inside of us never dies.

  • This music used to scare me as a kid but only a bit lol!

  • It slightly scared me too.

  • takes me back to when I was a kid.. that was some funky music!

  • The funk has emerged!

  • Awesome! That tune is so memorable! I used to watch it on CBC in Canada as a kid and remember seeing Big Bird sitting on a stool next to a giant CBC logo at the end. It was weird, but cool...

  • Sampled by MF Doom

  • Ahaha I can't believe MF DOOM sampled this on Kookies..that is so dope.

  • Yeah and completely ruined it with a nonsense rap that isn't rhythmic, rthyming or even at least funny.

  • Rofl let's see you put rhymes together like him..

DOOM is one of the most complex lyricists ever. If you don't even know what a multi is, don't even talk. He can make a whole sentence rhyme....every word, a different rhyme to the word in the last sentence in order....

let's see you do that kiddie.

  • DOOM, is a complex piece of SHIT! Rap takes NO talent whatsoever. Try listening to good music and you'd see how shitty rap music is!

  • takes no talent? write a rhyme and place it on you tube you idiot hater.

  • Yes, I do hate idiots, you just joined that crowd! RAP is CRAP with a silent C! Especially morons like MF Doom. If they had talent they'd make their OWN music for background, not rape an old song and ruin it like he did to this music..... tard.

  • I agree with ya %100 people like MF Doom are just too lazy , what happen to originality these days in music??? now it's a battle among rappers on who can steal the most original songs and ruin them the best... sad really..... should be laws on this can of lazyness....

  • hahaha smackerjacked i agree!! no originality! except i go the source of stealing: all them rockers stealing the blues and then calling it rock n roll: name em the stones? thieves beatles? thieves zepplin? thieves NAME EM i agree! where is the originality in music son?! hahahah

  • DOOM's lyrics take more time and complexity to put together than any other lyricist of another genre.

I love it for it's lyricism. If you'd rather hear music because of the talent in the singer, or the talent in the musician that makes the instrumental, then by all means go ahead.

Don't insult what you do not understand. Like I said, DOOM's lyrics are the most complex I've ever heard. The beautiful thing is....

It's something I can prove. Name a song with more complex lyrical rhyme schemes.

  • truth

  • your right "rap" isnt rhythmic...HIP HOP IS you cant rhyme so stop hating.

  • I missed this ending! I was hoping tonight that I'd find it and I did! I'm labeling this as one of my favorites, so I'll never have to miss it again!

  • Oh I miss this ending. Brings me back to the 70's when I was a kid living in New York. Thanks for posting this.

  • I loved this ending growing up in pre-school it always made me laugh too! i'd dance to this little ending

  • OMG I thought I was the only one that did that! Actually I did jumping jacks, LOL. I felt like you needed to move when this came on. Even now I find my leg bouncing when the music starts.

  • YES!I always loved that!THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU!

  • Are these credits from season 16 (1984-1985) or 17 (1985-1986)?

  • if you look at 0:22 it says 1985 so season 17

  • @RedSlash78 Plus the "Children's Television Workshop" first appeared side by side in Season 17.

  • @RedSlash78 Is this from Episode 2040? Because if so, then it's actually season 16 (ep first aired on March 1, 1985, which would make it a Season 16 ep).

  • @BeckyDR IDK

  • @RedSlash78 oh ok

  • @BeckyDR

Maybe it's a video tape remake made in 1985.

  • @Mario10974 what do you mean?

  • thats freakin scary

  • I'm trying hard to name all the instruments in this.... besides the percussion I hear hammond organ, dry guitar, bass, and saxophones. Anybody else catch another?

  • Tubular bells and a trumpet.

  • MF DOOM sampled this in the song Kookies

  • wow...is there a full version of this theme? anybody know what its title is or who wrote it?

  • Nostalgia: you gotta love it!

  • now i think i died in new york and came back to life on off the hook tv

  • :( :| :0 :O probably not, sorry if ya hoped for it :(

  • OLD-SCHOOL EDUCATION! I seen one of these when I was 2 knocking on 3.

  • I want an MP3 of the whole thing

  • too bad they didn't use it in the 90's.

  • I used to think this was scary!

  • holy crap me to were the PBS logo split

  • MF Doom used this song as a sample to his song "Kookies."

    LOL, look it up!!

  • That's true!

Though when Rhymesayers re-released the CD they had an alternate version of Kookies. I guess they couldn't clear the sample.

  • another one of my earliest memories^^ I'm so glad I was a kid in the 80s

  • coolbluelights: Ditto!

  • I've been looking for this for along time now

    good upload XD

  • Does anyone know who performed the Friday Credits theme ? Gotta find it !

    Thanks

  • Now this is the Friday ending theme I grew up with. I always thought that the music sounded like it was from another era, but I used to boogie down to it anyways!!

  • MF DOOM!!!!! Mmmmmm Kookies!!!!

  • Hell yes

  • I've been scouring the net for this shit. Correct me if I am wrong though, weren't there little kids like sliding down some humungous 'slide' or something with these credits? Perhaps my Sesame Street memories are all melting into one season..But I think i'm right. If anybody knows or better yet can find it-let me know. Thanks for posting this anyway...Anybody remember the Hot Fudge Show?

  • I miss Sesame Street when it was aimed more at the inner city population. It had more soul back then and was a joy to watch. Sadly, I can't stand to watch it anymore and my children don't like it either. It seems like the "soul" has been ripped right out of the show and it's not much different than any other show on television nowadays.

  • Today's word is "Cannabis" children, can you spell CANNABIS? lol

  • You kind of nailed it. That urban feeling has definitely evaporated out of the show. It happened gradually during the 90s, especially later in the decade.

And you're right, what we're left with is a show that, while still a nice kids' show, doesn't feel particularly unique anymore. It has the same generic graphics and overall tone of many other kids' shows.

    Too bad.

  • The Electric Company had lots of soul back in the days too. The music on there was just too funky for one person to stand! I loved it!

  • i couldnt wait for Seasame Street to end so we could get up and dance to the chimes at the end. I wonder if there is an extended version of this song. IT"S SHAG-A-DELIC

  • Hysterical, I would dance at the end too! Thought I was the only one.

  • I remember seeing this ending @ the babysitter's. That's how I got my start on PBS!!!

  • I had completely forgotten about those chimes. HA! Now I remember hearing that and thinking it was a good ending song for Sesame street.

  • This is awesome. Glad someone put this up, brings me back to the old days of being little and innocent.

  • I remember this ending chimes like it was yesterday!! Shit I feel so old!!

  • Yaaay! The famous chimes! :-D

  • WOW I LOVE THIS SONG>>>>>

  • I remember that i thought i would never see that again. Thanks :)

  • MF DOOM!!!

  • this was used for mf doom's "kookies" or "horehound"

  • haha! i loved the ending chimes! i didnt think anyone would ever post it!

  • Funny that I was not the only one looking for the Funky Chimes ending. Thanks for posting. This made my day!

  • Great to find this - that was the best part of the whole show - brought back memories :)

  • i never thought i would hear this again.

  • Did Joe Raposo write this piece of music perchance?

  • No.

  • "Funding for Sesame Street is provided in part by subscribers of Channel 11." (WTTW 11 is PBS affiliate in the Chicagoland area.)

  • I loved WTTW as a kid! Back when CTW had S.S,3-2-1 Contact and The Electric Company! I even used to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus and Wall Street Week (I loved the opening theme music.) Channel 11 was the best during the '70's and '80's.

  • Reminds me of disco for some reason...

  • It probably inspired M Bison's theme music in Street Fighter 2. sesame street fighter?

  • Well, it WAS from the 70s, so I guess it would sound sort of disco-ish (though didn't disco take off later in the decade?)

This ending music was used for exactly 20 years---1972 to 1992. So PLENTY of kids heard it every morning, and it's stuck somewhere in these now 20 to 40-year-olds' subconscious minds. XD

  • MF Doom samples this on "Kookies"......

  • This is 1985 year.

  • Does anyone have the full version of this?

  • Git down wit' yo' bad self, Sesame Street!

  • In a perfect world, this would be the closing theme for every show on TV...

  • if you have the full credits from episode 1095 please add it.

  • I was wondering if I would EVER hear this again! This is my FAVORITE Sesame Street ending!!! It is extremely funky and innovative!!!

  • That theme was the bomb, yo!

  • You know that it's Friday you hear this song. It's the weekend BABY!!!

  • This song was used after EVERY episode until 1992. Friday episodes included the full credit roll in addition to this funding "plug".

  • This takes me back to when I was a kid...Thanks so much for posting this!!

  • lol sesame street porn

  • Ima make a track from this clip. Can anyone help me find that pinball bouncing around on Sesame street when theyre countin from 1 to 12.
