Sustainability is a squishy term—and difficult to operationalize for public policy

Suggestions that we can dump large amounts of alkaline chemicals into the oceans to prevent their acidification seems dead in the water. A study shows it would cost trillions of dollars.
@eagle1O9 That scenario would be if Earth's climate wasn't being altered by extremely high emissions of CO2 caused by humans. But, the opposite of your scenario is bound to happen if immediate action is not taken.

When to move species struggling with climate change
.
As climate changes make native habitats unlivable to plants and animals, these species have two choices: Leave or go extinct.
Now, researchers are offering guidance on when conservationists should undertake the last-ditch strategy of transplanting struggling species to new habitats.
Global warming is neither fake nor stupid, it's a sad reality due to the fact humans are putting to much co2 into the atmosphere. And plenty of people do care about this issue, that's precisely why oil companies have to spend so much money hiring people to lie about the issue (such as the trolls we see posting online the same denials).
You have to ask, why do the oil companies have to work so hard to try to convince us not to care, or that it's not happening
@Nightversionn Those Wall St protests should hire Al fraud Gore as a consultant, since he would be able to give them much insight and knowledge of Wall St tactics being that he is in multiple business partnerships with Wall St bankers known as "the Carbon Mafia" to cash in on carbon credit trading & carbon taxes on us. Bet you will lose what paltry backing you have when more people know about Wall St & the Global Warm-Mongers!
The real reason behind this "BS. Documentary," is to introduce the carbon tax law, the US. (Corporate Controlled Government) now wants to charge people for air: plants absorb carbon dioxide and monoxide thus giving off oxygen. The earth it's self releases these gases naturally through volcanic activity and other craters...more than all, of mankind.
There's is a hole in the ozone, but that was cause by nuclear weapons tests, do the research, not meaning on those (Wiki sites)!
"Anyone that cant sit down take a breath .... CO2 is no more toxic than oxygen or any other element or gas essential to life on earth"
.
Red herring! Twice even!
first: Nobody claims or has ever claimed that CO2 is toxic in the concentrations discussed. Nor has it ever been toxic.
Secondly: It is not the natural CO2 that is responsible for the current climate change. It is the ADDITIONAL CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels that is responsible for the current climate change.
"5 volcanoes have been erupting for the bulk of this year this alone has released more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere than man has ever and could ever produce"
.
Which 5?
Which greenhouse gasses?
What were the concentrations?

Arizona is heating up faster than any other state in the lower 48. This state's continued warming gives ammunition to experts including University of Arizona climatologist Jonathan Overpeck, who has said Arizona is "ground zero" for the impacts of climate change.
Good news!! The Royal Dutch meteorological, KNMI, just reported:. The upper layers of the ocean did not warm up in the past 8 years despite the higher CO2 emision during this period ! Therefore the global temperature did not rise. No increase of melting from land or sea-ice at all. They wrote that this was against the expectation and tried to explain what happened to all the extra energy - heat - during this period. Mostly reflection of the heat into space and storage in the deap ocean.
There is a quick simple solution to global warming. It is called Muon Catalysed Fusion. As worked on by Star Scientific. NO CO2. NO Greenhouse Gases. NO Toxic Waste. WE NEED IT NOW. The source is deuterium from the World’s Oceans – virtually limitless. It is cheap to produce."..could cost as little as 0.9c per kilowatt" See blog "the Big Picture by Andrew Horvath" July 01 post

Fred Bailey has discovered the underlying nataural mechanism that regulates Sunspot production and Climate Change, there is a connection between them but Sunspots have nothing to do with Climate Change, Google solarchords and you will see for yourself
Well, the fact of the matter is there is a mountain of scientific evidence showing that the climate is warming rapidly.
Also every major scientific institution dealing with climate, ocean, and/or atmosphere agrees that the climate is warming rapidly and the primary cause is human CO2 emissions.
@MesoAsian No, let's just do what we're supposed to do, seek new energy sources (like solar, wave, geothermal etc...) that are cheap, clean, and ubiquitous...and you will find we can live even better that way not to mention reducing the dangerous co2 emissions ;)
The global warming deniers will find a way to keep denying. Don't underestimate their ingenuity when it comes to explaining away the blatantly obvious.
@HiddenRainful you're obviously fucking retarded. i do not care how old you are. go fucking look capitalize up in the dictionary and you'll see that you are wrong :) i believe we're talking about spelling and not CAPITALIZING, bitch.
Average Global Temperatures SPIKED +0.6C (+1.08 degrees F) since 1975.
Summer Arctic Sea Ice has dropped -50% since 1980.
Since 1950 atmospheric CO2 has spiked +30% over highest levels in 400,000+ years.
CO2 Ocean Acidification is up +30% since 1900!

@HiddenRainful sweetheart, don't hypocritically call someone out for spelling something wrong when you can't even spell capitalize correctly, mkay? :)
@QuantumStates True, but they should all live in a state of equilibrium. Not what's happening today with humans changing the geology and atmosphere, and biosphere to the point if we kill of enough of the things that support us (oceans as another example), we don't deserve nor will we be here much longer either
@Nightversionn Humans are not separate from Earth. We are products of it. To think otherwise is deluded. In effect, Earth is eating away at herself. It is not a question of "deserving". If this outgrowth of Earth that we refer to as the human species is destroying its ability to continue surviving on this planet, then that is likely the way Earth is achieving a state of equilibrium. We are at the mercy of the Earth, not the other way around.
@QuantumStates That's interesting and I actually agree with this. And I think this is what's occurring. We humans are definitely a part of the earth. Yeah. At the same with within this framework we're destroying ourselves and equilibrium will come again in a few thousand years. Yes.
Look up "Anthropocene" and we're not only changing the atmosphere but the geological record as well.
We don't disagree, you're just looking at the bigger picture and you are right in that.
Did you know that increased solar and volcanic activity have been causing climate change more than anything? Sorry, we can try to go green, but it won't help much because we're actually at the mercy of these uncontrollable natural phenomenons.
I hate these religious videos. It just gets the zealots all stirred up. Ooh, don't you say there isn't any Global Warming! My god will strike you down in 20 years boogedy boogedy! How do they believe in something with no proof whatsoever?! Oh yeah, their "prophets"; Al Gore and General Electric tell them what to think. Speaking of MEGA CORPS (GE) isn't your Jesus Obama in bed with them? Yup, even went on a honeymoon to South America with them. You are a puppet of the worst kind.
The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is very likely human-induced and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 1,300 years.
i love how everyone knows wats going to happen but don't do shit. We'll end up like the Rapanuis, those stupids knew how it would end for them, but didn't do shit
@failurbanik Summer Arctic sea ice is expected to be GONE in 5-20 years. Average temp. rise estimates for this century are +1C - 5C (MIT estimates =+3.5 -7.4C).
It depends on how much climate feedback mechanisms, like ocean warming & methane release kick in.
Different models predict different scenarios. No one actually knows.

in the 70`s they feared global cooling. 30 years later it was global warming. now we see a trend of global cooling again. the temperatures are fluctuating all the time no matter what we do and we cannot alter the global temperature no matter how much we want.7 billion people, with all their activities don`t make not as much as 1% of the amount of CO2 released by natural sources. by the way, i like George Carlin`s view on this matter.
@WesternWhiteWolf Well you have been brainwashed, not having children so they will starve and die is not a problem if the greens stop trying to change us to something beyond oil as its all for nothing as co2 is a plant food
@busguy100 CO2 is not necessarily a plant 'food'. Plants take CO2 and fix the carbon into sugars. That's their food. And no, it's not all for nothing. I don't think anything humans can do will take all the CO2 out of the atmosphere. However, we're destroying large swaths of forest, which leaves less plants to take CO2 out of the atmosphere. Whether we're burning oil or clear-cutting a forest, we're pumping CO2 into the atmosphere like there's no tomorrow. There may very well be no tomorrow.
@WesternWhiteWolf If things go as they are, YOU may starve to death... Soon natural resources run dry and all of society will stop, no harvesting of crops, no transportation of food etc. Once we run out of oil, human civilization will go back to the 18th century, both in technology and population (at least 2-4 billions will die). And this may be only 30-50 years from now. The only way to stop this is to limit reproduction rates, which will never happen so be prepared.
@cocacolaligification Well, here's me thinking if I do have kids, I'll opt for adoption. And I'm studying how to be more self-sufficient. Maybe I'll survive.
@WesternWhiteWolf I just watched the documentary: "Collapse" which explained how society will gradually break down as the population continue to increase and the natural resources continue to decrease. He explained the only way people may be able to survive. People have to become 100% self sufficient, find drinking water, get a warm home, make vegetables in the garden and being capable of gathering food.
@WesternWhiteWolf But let me just say this, don't bother thinking about something like it. To fear for the future will just make you end up with throwing away your life. Have a child and don't bother too much about what will happen, I don't. Nothing will probably happen for the next 30-40 years, and you and your children will have grown up a long time ago. And we don't even know 100% that something so bad will happen, maybe they will even have a substitution for oil? But that's the future ;)

Carbon emissions linked to Europe's hay fever rise
.
Carbon dioxide emissions may be raising pollen counts in European cities, according to a continent-wide study. Researchers from 13 EU nations analysed pollen levels for more than 20 species of tree and plant and found that many, including several that cause allergies such as hay fever, correlated with rising CO2 levels.

GW issue is real or not real is not important. For safety reasons alone, we shud consider the potential bad effects and act accordingly.
However whats more critical now is the way the world is handling the solutions....
THEY ARE NOT SHUTTING DOWN POLLUTERS OR THE SAID GUILTY PARTIES...BUT ARE SETTING A NEW BUSINESS CALL CARBON TRADING.....SCREWING EVEN MORE MONEY FROM YOU AND ME IN THE FORM OF CARBON TAXES......
LOL, the posters below me are so ignorant. For one thing, as Carl Sagan said, the heat from the sun accounts for far more of the total heat on the Earth's surface than heat from the Earth's core does. Volcanoes are by no means the ones that keep us "warm enough."
What a crock! The Cenozoic era rose about 15 degree (F) while CO2 was in steep decline. Not only did that not create deserts, it made the world much wetter. And then AFTER the temperature spike, while the earth cooled, CO2 rose to levels several times today's level. These crackpot vids are nothing but pseudocience to promote the Magic CO2 religion.
@wrjamescom Don't expect reason from the Warming Hystericists. Global Warming leads to more precipitation, not less. NatGeo claims that a 6 degree rise in temperature will turn the oceans into wastelands, yet during the Eocene and Paleocene, when temps were 6-12 degrees warmer (for about 15 million years) and ocean life thrived.
@PissedFechtmeister You are 100% correct. I remember when I was a kid, National Geographic was highly respected and for good reason. Today they and the BBC are nothing but political propaganda peddlers. I wouldn't expose any kids under 14 or so to anything produced by them in the last 15 years without first explaining that it's a political ad with lies and fraud to promote an agenda and so shouldn't be taken too seriously.
@wrjamescom They're clearly jumping on the Warming Hystericist bandwagon. Fear makes for good sales. No one would buy their product if they said, "Don't worry, we're currently cooler than most times in the planet's history."
@PissedFechtmeister Yeah, but the long term real threat is cooling. The Earth has a molten core and is cooling every day. Eventually, there'll be no more volcanic activity. By then, "Snowball Earth" will be the norm. It's the sun's interaction with water that drives the Earth's climate, the CO2 is a meaningless trace gas. But it's volcanoes that keep us warm enough to keep that process going. When that stops we'll end up like Mars.
@wrjamescom By the time that happens humans won't even exist anymore. By then we will have evolved into homo sapiens supremum and will have interstellar travel capability.
@PissedFechtmeister What makes you think we are evolving toward more intelligence? We have created an artificial world where the "fittest"eg. those producing the most offspring, are the least intelligent and the least productive. It's still evolution, of course, but not in the same direction that created modern humans. It's unlikely that what is left of our species in a billion years will possess any technology, assuming the current direction. :)
The AGW debate is really all about why anyone can be so incredibly stupid to believe theoretical computer projections that CO2 will burn up the planet instead of scientific observations that show global temps have reduced in the last 20 years ...and its laughable that these incredibly stupid people debate fiction as if it was real and call others ignorant if you challenge their global warming fanaticism ...mind boggling!!

Study: Rise in rain and snow linked to human actions

An increase in heavy precipitation that has afflicted many countries is at least partly a consequence of human influence on the atmosphere, climate scientists reported in a new study (7 February 2011)
Line the pockets of public servants, rich bankers and government. First it was it was the carbon, then golbal warming mark two, the climate change and now the earth is cooling. If you are that stupid to see its not a scam, after k2000 computors, fake bird flu/pig flu pandmec, bank bailouts, ozone depetion and the rest of the cons the governments pulls. More green house gas come out off volcano than it does, 100 years of populion by man.
@Bristow42 Overreaction to terrorism, free speech (death and bomb threats), drug use, and marijuana has been far more destructive to society. As expected of an AGW-denier, you fail to mention these.
Unfortunately, we have terrible UNDERreaction to AGW, which - unlike "terrorism", which is a hoax - is real, proven, and happening now.
@mphello why is there over population, reason the fat cats force these people to have more children, due to lack of education, health and religous dogma. The some reason population is decreasing in develope countries, because of standard of living.
i believe that the government should give huuuuuge tax cuts to everyone, including those companies so that they can meet the changing demand from the people. The government is not the solution to this problem, it's the change in demand of the people as a whole for new energy sources. I also like the idea of nuclear power plants over wind and solar power...Also i don't believe in global warming or cooling, but i do believe in climate change due to the changing # of solar flares
@iluvpoliticzz Thats ridiculous, they've already given out tax cuts (big ones, in fact) to these fuckers, and thats not a good thing. The megacorporations aren't merely uncompetative, they can't even survive without getting bailed out by the government every decade or so (believe me, its not just limited to recessions, this shit happens all the time). Then they go and buy out the smaller, healtheir business and build a fucking monopoly in their field (a monopoly they don't deserve!).
We can't reverse time and repair the damages global warming has done to the arctic and the antarctic however we can stop it from getting worse, if all the arctic ice melts it'll cause and ice age in the northern hemisphere.
Science already proved, therefore denial is no longer an issue, that to avoid global warming human suffering, the carbon content of fossil fuels must be progressively taxed on all world economies, returning all collected monies in equal parts to the inhabitants of each economy to reward ways of life and fuels that shall cause least damage to our common atmosphere.
We've got bunches of un-needed nuclear weapons... could always blow a few hundred of them up & create a lil' nuclear winter. Sure, there'd be a few flipper-babies... but think of the savings to our air-conditioning bills!
lolololololol global warming is a joke! :D you really think that if the earth gets 5 degrees warmer that our earth is going to completely send everyone into shock? i can understand like 40 degrees but 5? i mean thats a little over exaggerated...
@TheAlloyy Actually, 5 degrees average warmer temperature would have a huge impact. It's much more complicated than every day is like it was before but 5C higher. The largest effects would occur from the loss of the polar ice-caps raising the ocean level, and the destruction of sustained glaciers in mountain-ranges which provide the water supply to much of the world. Ask any geologist or natural scientist who's studied this and they will confirm that this small change will be huge.
@ikilleduku Yes, and we are set to reach 7 billion this year 2011. Too many. But birth rates are coming down as more people reach higher standards of living and more women get opportunities worldwide. That means we have to transition ever more quickly out of fossil fuels. Sustainability can happen but it's going to take a lot of effort in a wide range of areas
@sexyxrs Thanks for showing exactly how IGNORANT deniers really are. Did you watch the video? Duhh??? MIT News, May 19, 2009 MIT Research published in the American Meteorological Society's JOURNAL OF CLIMATE, predicts a median probability that worldwide surface temperatures will RISE 5.2 degrees Celsius (9.3F) by the year 2100. See the WeatherChannel YouTube: Global Warming - Cool Summer WHY?? /watch?v=sX6jEsnGcrA New Study: Melting Arctic Ice almost gone in 10 years. /watch?v=MbyoD9CLn1k
Actually, to look at the science, which is obscenely clear, and to then say "well if it turns out to be true", THAT would be arrogant rhetoric based upon a claim not only unsubstantiated but completely the opposite of what reality presents. Arrogant unsubstantiated rhetoric indeed!
If there aint no food, and the marine systems crash, if the seas rise and the deserts takes over then yes, IT IS HIGHLY BLOODY LIKELY OUR ORDERD HUMAN SOCIETY OF 7 BILLION MIGHT HAVE SOME "ISSUES" ADJUSTING.
Kenyan farmers using agriculture to fight climate change
.
Thousands of farmers in Western Kenya are attracting global attention after being the first group in Africa to win financing from the World Bank to use agriculture to fight climate change.
I'm not commenting on the validity of the science behind climate change, just the radical statements being put out about what catastrophes it will cause. Undoubtedly there will be consequences if global warming turns out to be true, but to make the unsubstantiated claim that human civilization will collapse is arrogant rhetoric.
Little fact to consider.....Hydrocarbons, and other pollutants take 30 years to go from the surface of the earth to the ozone layer......News flash...We're just considering to do something about it now....News flash....way to fuckin late now people. Been nice knowing you all and sharing the earth. The recent country conflicts will even speed this process up considerably as every country fights each other for the cleanest, and most sustainable land
It may be too late to curb many of the changes but continuing with business-as-usual will surely exacerbate the problem.
So choose. We can knowingly make it worse for our future generations or we can move to sustainable living to curb the effects; a choice without a choice.
@ReduceGHGs Great point, but do you realize that moving to sustainable living may be a requirement quite soon, it's called "peak oil production", and it's not a theory, it's happening. It's funny how we think that transitioning to more sustainable living is just an option, as if we have decades left of this cheap oil economy. We have no control over our producable oil reserves. At this point it is clear that we will use fossil fuels till it is not possible any longer, which isn't far ahead
@dqgates .Yes, peak oil will force the move to sustainable energy sources. Either nature and the laws of supply and demand will force the transition later or we'll use our brains and move earlier to avoid some of the more nasty consequences of warming. Sustainable living is coming one way or the other. I hope that as with some other distructive behaviors we'll learn to control ourselves. Oil has many uses other than burning it. Adjusting the business by taxing pollution will help. So we'll see.
@ReduceGHGs Well the carbon cap and trade sounds like somewhat of a joke to me.. We really need to invest the oil we have now into renewables and starting to rebuild infrastructure, because when we find ourselves at that point of dwindling oil, we will not have enough producable oil to do so! instead we are still driving around in <10 mpg cars, hopping around the world in huge airplanes, and wasting the precious oil in other ways that have no positive gain for our future, only negative!
@dqgates "Cap & Trade" developed in the late 60s by NAPCA (later called EPA) as the most effective way to reduce global emissions. It may be our best chance given unavoidable realities.
Reducing demand for fossil fuels is critical. This involves a geat deal including increasing their relative costs and increasing efficiencies.
As you eluded, the oil supply will decline. Its better that we use the remainder wisely and not just pollute with it. Our atmosphere is now a waste disposal site.
@poxflaza: Refrigerators cool their insides but warm up the outside - just feel the radiator panel behind your fridge. Same with ACs. So, you cannot cool your room by just opening your fridge door. Similarly, you cannot cool your room & the yard using an AC.
@Krait99 Bravo! The AGW-denying breeder-fanatics who pump out 14 children and then don't care if they die of starvation have silenced anti-overpopulation activists and workers for too long.
Government and media needs to hear a NEW VOICE! I am PROUD to support mandatory vasectomies for men, starting with anti-vegans, religionists, Republicans, Democrats, and all AGW-deniers.
@Nightversionn How am *I* a troll? Do you see how many fucked-up views are on this board?
And not just from AGW-deniers. There are some who agree with me that overpopulation is a serious problem, but they've got all sorts of bizarre explanations. However, almost none are their own.
e.g. Higher standards of living do not CAUSE lower birthrates. That is a myth. There is only correlation.
@mphello You are a denier troll based on the fact I've read your same comments over and over on these videos, line for line, especially about overpopulation. Deniers use that a lot. That's not the big part of the problem, it is countries the those in Europe, Japan, US, etc..that use fossil fuels intensely per capita. Deniers just try to scapegoat others for their own overconsumption. Plus your other comments I've read a thousand times literally.
@mphello I could be wrong OK? I'm just going by your comment on overpopulation and it sounds like all the other denier sock puppets I've read it many times. That of course doesn't mean you're one of them and yes I could be wrong about that, could be. Anyway, I will try to read your other comments down thread OK? And if I jumped to conclusions I'm sorry. It's just there is a denier on here with hundreds of sock accounts.
@Nightversionn Thanks, but, don't apologize to me. BION, as much as I don't like apologizing to anyone else (duh.. nobody does), I don't like or want people to apologize to me. I just want them to understand, or change, or whatever. Anyway, my point is: we all will have this problem of everyone we meet will agree strongly on one issue but disagree strongly on another. So, for instance, even if AGW were not real, there are STILL plenty of other reasons to reduce population.
@mphello Furthermore, many of those on, for example, Max Keiser's website, who praise Keiser for railing against criminal terrorist bankers and telling people to buy silver to Crash JP Morgan, unfortunately are AGW-deniers, because they don't have a brain and for no logical reason other than their own selfish consumption and refusal to make any changes in their lifestyle, perpetuate the myth of climate-scientist and IPCC frauds, lumping it together with REAL frauds by JP Morgan Goldman Sachs.
@mphello I'm an atheist and a big supporter of practically everything Pat Condell of the UK says regarding Islamofascists. Yet, he blames liberals (in the EU), even though they are merely pseudo-liberals.
True liberals always fight the greater power, where-ever it is localized.
Furthermore, just as I side with atheists in their fight against religionists for making their beliefs based upon faith rather than investigation, many atheists commit the exact same faith-based pontification..
@mphello .. on the Alien Hypothesis for many UFOs and USOs. Yes, for all practical purposes, I believe aliens DO visit earth with advanced technology. That is all that I or anyone ELSE knows about them and why they're here.
Then, on top of that, while I agree with "believers of the alien hypothesis" that aliens do visit earth by some forms of advanced tech, I strongly DISAGREE with many of them who think they "know" why they're here
@mphello So I see you understand the denier/right winger crowd, perpetuating those lies so that they can continue living large. They hold the same beliefs you and I do, they just are shilling for the fossil fuel industry, taking advantage of the fact most people in the world (obviously in the US and Europe as well), aren't educated and don't know how to evaluate information. But I will again just reiterate the US, in terms of sheer volume, consumes too much oil.
@Nightversionn Yes. Absolutely! "US, in terms of sheer volume, consumes too much oil" Worth repeating!
But, EVERY problem scales with population (and not strictly linearly).
I am sure you are concerned with more than just global warming. Common denier lie told against "climate hawks" (I like that term used to describe us!): that we are concerned ONLY about AGW and no other problem, and that we believe solving AGW will solve every problem in the world.
@mphello .. way, then I can assume you are concerned about OTHER issues besides AGW, even if all the burdens of life force us to tackle at most ONE issue in our lives.
Well, I'm the same way with other issues: overpopulation (even if there were no AGW), animal rights, prisoners' rights, any other form of justice: always about "fighting the greater power", whether that greater power is a nation or merely a common mental paradigm that squashes exposure of a minority view.
@mphello Basically, what I know is that there is one denier on youtube, a huge troll, with hundreds of sock accounts and most of the deniers you see on these videos are all the same person. Maybe you are not one of those accounts, and if not, sorry. About population, yes it's a problem but it's not THE problem, the problem is places like my country, the US, who's use of fossil fuels in sheer volume, that's the problem, not scapegoating lesser developed countries. That's all my point is

It happened during Ondoy but the mud-caked cadavers that are now pushing Search and Rescue workers to their limits are most reminiscent of a long-ago incident -- the flooding in Ormoc City in 1991 when thousands died.

When to move species struggling with climate change

Nightversionn 7 months ago
@Nightversionn Humans are not separate from Earth. We are products of it. To think otherwise is deluded. In effect, Earth is eating away at herself. It is not a question of "deserving". If this outgrowth of Earth that we refer to as the human species is destroying its ability to continue surviving on this planet, then that is likely the way Earth is achieving a state of equilibrium. We are at the mercy of the Earth, not the other way around.

@WesternWhiteWolf Well you have been brainwashed, not having children so they will starve and die is not a problem if the greens stop trying to change us to something beyond oil as its all for nothing as co2 is a plant food
busguy100 10 months ago

@WesternWhiteWolf I just watched the documentary: "Collapse" which explained how society will gradually break down as the population continue to increase and the natural resources continue to decrease. wrjamescom 11 months ago
PissedFechtmeister 11 months ago
@PissedFechtmeister You are 100% correct. I remember when I was a kid, National Geographic was highly respected and for good reason. Today they and the BBC are nothing but political propaganda peddlers. I wouldn't expose any kids under 14 or so to anything produced by them in the last 15 years without first explaining that it's a political ad with lies and fraud to promote an agenda and so shouldn't be taken too seriously.
wrjamescom 11 months ago
@wrjamescom They're clearly jumping on the Warming Hystericist bandwagon. Fear makes for good sales. No one would buy their product if they said, "Don't worry, we're currently cooler than most times in the planet's history."
PissedFechtmeister 11 months ago
@PissedFechtmeister Yeah, but the long term real threat is cooling. The Earth has a molten core and is cooling every day. Eventually, there'll be no more volcanic activity. By then, "Snowball Earth" will be the norm. It's the sun's interaction with water that drives the Earth's climate, the CO2 is a meaningless trace gas. But it's volcanoes that keep us warm enough to keep that process going. When that stops we'll end up like Mars.
wrjamescom 11 months ago
@wrjamescom By the time that happens humans won't even exist anymore. By then we will have evolved into homo sapiens supremum and will have interstellar travel capability.
PissedFechtmeister 11 months ago
@PissedFechtmeister What makes you think we are evolving toward more intelligence? We have created an artificial world where the "fittest"eg. those producing the most offspring, are the least intelligent and the least productive. It's unlikely that what is left of our species in a billion years will possess any technology, assuming the current direction. :)

"Traditional social systems would break down..."
And then a car crashes.
How does Global warming cause that???
This is brainwashing propaganda.
I'm not commenting on the validity of the science behind climate change, just the radical statements being put out about what catastrophes it will cause. Undoubtedly there will be consequences if global warming turns out to be true, but to make the unsubstantiated claim that human civilization will collapse is arrogant rhetoric.
YOD5FED 1 year ago
@YOD5FED it's not that complicated, look at the title, "5 Degrees Warmer: Civilization Collapses"

We are humans don't expect to change unless you know that change is going to be a good one.

TheGreasepit 1 year ago
@TheGreasepit .
It may be too late to curb many of the changes but continuing with business-as-usual will surely exacerbate the problem.
So choose. We can knowingly make it worse for our future generations or we can move to sustainable living to curb the effects; a choice without a choice.
ReduceGHGs 1 year ago 38
@ReduceGHGs Great point, but do you realize that moving to sustainable living may be a requirement quite soon, it's called "peak oil production", and it's not a theory, it's happening. It's funny how we think that transitioning to more sustainable living is just an option, as if we have decades left of this cheap oil economy. We have no control over our producable oil reserves. At this point it is clear that we will use fossil fuels till it is not possible any longer, which isn't far ahead
dqgates 11 months ago
@dqgates .Yes, peak oil will force the move to sustainable energy sources. Either nature and the laws of supply and demand will force the transition later or we'll use our brains and move earlier to avoid some of the more nasty consequences of warming. Sustainable living is coming one way or the other. I hope that as with some other distructive behaviors we'll learn to control ourselves. Oil has many uses other than burning it. Adjusting the business by taxing pollution will help. So we'll see.
ReduceGHGs 11 months ago
@ReduceGHGs Well the carbon cap and trade sounds like somewhat of a joke to me.. We really need to invest the oil we have now into renewables and starting to rebuild infrastructure, because when we find ourselves at that point of dwindling oil, we will not have enough producable oil to do so! instead we are still driving around in <10 mpg cars, hopping around the world in huge airplanes, and wasting the precious oil in other ways that have no positive gain for our future, only negative!
dqgates 11 months ago
@dqgates "Cap & Trade" developed in the late 60s by NAPCA (later called EPA) as the most effective way to reduce global emissions. It may be our best chance given unavoidable realities.
Reducing demand for fossil fuels is critical. This involves a geat deal including increasing their relative costs and increasing efficiencies.
As you eluded, the oil supply will decline. Its better that we use the remainder wisely and not just pollute with it. Our atmosphere is now a waste disposal site.
ReduceGHGs 11 months ago
Not only its gets warmer. The rate of warming is rapidly increasing . 92 -95- 97 percent going to die after two or three days.

I say we all open up our refrigerators, turn up our ACs and fans, and cool this motherfucker down.

@poxflaza yeah..if the temp goes up than we will just deploy more solar panels..lets fight fire with fire!! Bring It On..or should i say..Turn It On!
kelnology 1 year ago
@poxflaza: Refrigerators cool their insides but warm up the outside - just feel the radiator panel behind your fridge. Same with ACs. So, you cannot cool your room by just opening your fridge door. Similarly, you cannot cool your room & the yard using an AC.

There is no human problem that can't be solved first by reducing the human population by 50%
Krait99 1 year ago 3
@Krait99 I take it you're volunteering to be one of the 50%?
CoryTheRaven 1 year ago
@Krait99 You're right. Life should be about quality, not quantity, right?
JMan9391 1 year ago
@Krait99 Bravo! The AGW-denying breeder-fanatics who pump out 14 children and then don't care if they die of starvation have silenced anti-overpopulation activists and workers for too long.
Government and media needs to hear a NEW VOICE! I am PROUD to support mandatory vasectomies for men, starting with anti-vegans, religionists, Republicans, Democrats, and all AGW-deniers.
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello can anyone say troll?
Nightversionn 1 year ago
@Nightversionn How am *I* a troll? Do you see how many fucked-up views are on this board?
And not just from AGW-deniers. There are some who agree with me that overpopulation is a serious problem, but they've got all sorts of bizarre explanations. However, almost none are their own.
e.g. Higher standards of living do not CAUSE lower birthrates. That is a myth. There is only correlation.
People still have a CHOICE not to breed.
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello You are a denier troll based on the fact I've read your same comments over and over on these videos, line for line, especially about overpopulation. Deniers use that a lot. That's not the big part of the problem, it is countries the those in Europe, Japan, US, etc..that use fossil fuels intensely per capita. Deniers just try to scapegoat others for their own overconsumption. Plus your other comments I've read a thousand times literally.
Nightversionn 1 year ago
@Nightversionn No, I am not a denier. You must be the denier. Overpopulation is a serious problem.
You're obviously one of the many clones of a real climate activist who does good work here.
You clearly have an obsession with me if you have "ready my comments a thousand times".
In my previous incarnations on YouTube, I've said the exact same things, but many more times,
since I haven't used "mphello" handle very long, yet you never complained then.
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello I could be wrong OK? I'm just going by your comment on overpopulation and it sounds like all the other denier sock puppets I've read it many times. That of course doesn't mean you're one of them and yes I could be wrong about that, could be. Anyway, I will try to read your other comments down thread OK? And if I jumped to conclusions I'm sorry. It's just there is a denier on here with hundreds of sock accounts.
Nightversionn 1 year ago
@Nightversionn Thanks, but, don't apologize to me. BION, as much as I don't like apologizing to anyone else (duh.. nobody does), I don't like or want people to apologize to me. I just want them to understand, or change, or whatever. Anyway, my point is: we all will have this problem of everyone we meet will agree strongly on one issue but disagree strongly on another. So, for instance, even if AGW were not real, there are STILL plenty of other reasons to reduce population.
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello Furthermore, many of those on, for example, Max Keiser's website, who praise Keiser for railing against criminal terrorist bankers and telling people to buy silver to Crash JP Morgan, unfortunately are AGW-deniers, because they don't have a brain and for no logical reason other than their own selfish consumption and refusal to make any changes in their lifestyle, perpetuate the myth of climate-scientist and IPCC frauds, lumping it together with REAL frauds by JP Morgan Goldman Sachs.
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello I'm an atheist and a big supporter of practically everything Pat Condell of the UK says regarding Islamofascists. Yet, he blames liberals (in the EU), even though they are merely pseudo-liberals.
True liberals always fight the greater power, where-ever it is localized.
Furthermore, just as I side with atheists in their fight against religionists for making their beliefs based upon faith rather than investigation, many atheists commit the exact same faith-based pontification..
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello .. on the Alien Hypothesis for many UFOs and USOs. Yes, for all practical purposes, I believe aliens DO visit earth with advanced technology. That is all that I or anyone ELSE knows about them and why they're here.
Then, on top of that, while I agree with "believers of the alien hypothesis" that aliens do visit earth by some forms of advanced tech, I strongly DISAGREE with many of them who think they "know" why they're here
and give all sorts of idiotic...
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello .. explanations for aliens, especially religious-bible-related explanations.
So, you see, this IS a problem: no two individuals agreeing on everything.
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello So I see you understand the denier/right winger crowd, perpetuating those lies so that they can continue living large. They hold the same beliefs you and I do, they just are shilling for the fossil fuel industry, taking advantage of the fact most people in the world (obviously in the US and Europe as well), aren't educated and don't know how to evaluate information. But I will again just reiterate the US, in terms of sheer volume, consumes too much oil.
Nightversionn 1 year ago
@Nightversionn Yes. Absolutely! "US, in terms of sheer volume, consumes too much oil" Worth repeating!
But, EVERY problem scales with population (and not strictly linearly).
I am sure you are concerned with more than just global warming. Common denier lie told against "climate hawks" (I like that term used to describe us!): that we are concerned ONLY about AGW and no other problem, and that we believe solving AGW will solve every problem in the world.
Since, I ASSUME you don't think that..
mphello 1 year ago
@mphello .. way, then I can assume you are concerned about OTHER issues besides AGW, even if all the burdens of life force us to tackle at most ONE issue in our lives.
Well, I'm the same way with other issues: overpopulation (even if there were no AGW), animal rights, prisoners' rights, any other form of justice: always about "fighting the greater power", whether that greater power is a nation or merely a common mental paradigm that squashes exposure of a minority view.

Nightversionn 1 year ago
@mphello Basically, what I know is that there is one denier on youtube, a huge troll, with hundreds of sock accounts and most of the deniers you see on these videos are all the same person. Maybe you are not one of those accounts, and if not, sorry. About population, yes it's a problem but it's not THE problem, the problem is places like my country, the US, who's use of fossil fuels in sheer volume, that's the problem, not scapegoating lesser developed countries. That's all my point is
