The first step to take before any peace talks take place would be for the Palestinians to get a real government. This Fatah - Hamas bullshit isn't doing them any good. Netanyahu might be an asshole, but if the US wants him to, he'll sit down and talk. The question is: who actually represents the majority of Palestinians? From what I saw back there, Fatah is not liked, but Hamas is hated.

@LSRochon I think that one should not assume Democracy begins and ends with a democratic process, ie the election of Hamas. It is incumbent on the elected party to continue to behave according to the principles of democracy. Hamas has failed in this regard by killing much of it's opposition, oppressing women and firing missiles at the civilian population next door. I'm not saying that Fatah deserves to rule in Gaza, elections are overdue now anyway. Hopefully the populations will see sense.
Pro-peace Mahmoud Abbas has been running the West Bank for years. And what has the WB gotten in return? A higher rate of settlement building, a higher rate of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homeland. Same's true when Hamas declared a ceasefire when Shimon Perez was in power.

The first step to take before any peace talks take place would be for the Palestinians to get a real government. This Fatah - Hamas bullshit isn't doing them any good. Netanyahu might be an asshole, but if the US wants him to, he'll sit down and talk. The question is: who actually represents the majority of Palestinians? From what I saw back there, Fatah is not liked, but Hamas is hated.

It is incumbent on the elected party to continue to behave according to the principles of democracy. Hamas has failed in this regard by killing much of it's opposition, oppressing women and firing missiles at the civilian population next door. I'm not saying that Fatah deserves to rule in Gaza, elections are overdue now anyway. Hopefully the populations will see sense.

With respect to Cornel West, the building of settlements is the only thing that afforded Israel any peace with Egypt and Syria. The occupation and settlement building are actually the only pressure that created lasting peace with Syria and Egypt. Israel removed settlements from Gaza under US pressure and it brought increased violence not peace.
