Have you seen the videos from jw934 on YouTube? He's got small stoves that are so efficient he can bake a cake on top of them. Also look at WorldStove for biochar-producing stoves.
very good idea, but having lots of experience with these.. its not very effecient as it lets out wayyy too much heat. Your best bet is to close off the middle 2 or 3 rows of holes.
@martialartist34 not a bad suggestion. I haven't done any mods to this. However I did see a similar piece with the middle with no hole, I should have got it and did a compare, doh!
I got some nuts, bolts, and washers at the hardware store to make 4 legs for the bottom. If you fiddle around with the adjustment of them and make them close to level, you won't need a pot stand, because it has great ventilation as it is. I went WAY overboard and got stainless hardware ( about $12- as I recall! ). Best little camp stove I ever had! ; )
@matt4270 yes, I did the same thing shortly after I shot this video. But I ended up using the bolts along the top row going inward so that it would act as a cup holder for my camp mug.
what size width and height... I've tried ingenious things but the simplicity of this ... Very impressed. Backpacking in winter, with no dry wood around I use Fondue gas. 7 minutes from straight water I have 2 cups of boiling water for a ration pack. From snow to boiling 11 minutes, using a screen!
@southernone1 it'a about 4 inches diameter and maybe 6-7 inches tall. the only issue is that you need to feed it fuel is you are boiling water over a cup - so you need to cut a portion out in order to add wood.

jw934 is constantly refining inventions in his kitchen and explains things really well. Then WorldStove is a very ambitious and visionary project.

it's great to see people being innovative and using whats around them to get the job done.
I like to see people using twig stoves, they are sustainable and just make sence, The fuel is all around you.

@thecyr.. Thanks for the response. With the middle few holes covered, it allows plenty of airflow, but requires less wood to do the same job :)

Man I was at IKEA so bored, and then I saw one of these and remembered the video from a year or so ago. Needless to say I picked it up.

there are holes at the bottom, but i'd need to solder on or maybe just use screws to lift it up so that the air can come from underneath.
thecyr 2 years ago
excellent, if you put a windscreen around it with a few holes at the bottom you would increase the efficency I think.
