I see someone mention the Duke game with the shot...State's 83 game is without a doubt much more intense as we were playing for a title. I saw NCSU play Maryland and UCLA that year and it is a hard decision on which one was better. NCSU V UM best ACC game ever...NCSU V UCLA best game outside of ACC.
YES...the best all ACC game ever...I was there..sitting at basket level off to the side...David Thompson vs Len Elmore...and NO DUNKING ALLOWED ....What a game...but still a close 2nd to NC States Lorenzo Charles victory in 83 ??? With Jimmy V running all around the court...So far in my 54 years...none better...Duke & Laettner...great...Freddy Brown throwing the ball to James Worthy with 12 seconds left...NC State beating Bill Walton and UCLA.......all GREAT GAMES TOO. !!!!!!!
it was awesome game but i would drop it down to # 2 i would rank UK vs DUKE ahead of it because it was a NCAA REGIONAL FINAL .THE '74 ACC TITLE GAME WAS THE GREATEST ACC GAME EVER PLAYED.
I went to this game with my aunt, a rams club member from UNC who always had tickets for all the tournaments back then. The tournaments from 73 - 76 were some of the greatest sports moments of my life.
Remember it like it was yesterday...it's still the most heartbreaking loss I've ever experienced in my roughly 40 years of following sports. In the modern era, that 74 Maryland team was ABSOLUTELY of final-4 quality, and they never even made it to the NCAA tournament!! The 02 national championship team had more depth, but there has never been a better starting 5 than Len Elmore,Tom McMillan, Owen Brown, John Lucas and Mo Howard. GOD, what a team that was!!
I think the 1972-1973 N.C. State team was better than the 1973-1974. They were put on NCAA probation. They could really given it to Walton and company. I do believe that was the best UCLA team (1972-1973).
Greatest ACC game ever played. Two Teams that were at the top of their game and the winner would go on to win the National Championship, loser goes home. Probably the best team Maryland ever had including the 2002 Champions. For MD it was the 3rd straight game for NCSATE the 2nd.
I agree......I was in Virginia then and saw it live with Pilot life`s great ACC coverage........fantastic game.......especially considering the stakes of there only being 1 bid per conference........to the ACC tourney winner.......today, both teams would be in NCAA tourney and this game would mean nothing...great memories
I may not have been born yet around the time of that game, but I would still rank it as the best game in ACC Basketball history. I heard because of that game, the NCAA changed the rules the following year that teams that were ranked, I think in the top 10 around the time of the NCAA's, were given an at-large spot. Whenever this game is re-aired on ESPN Classic, I'll try to catch or at the least, tape it.

103-100 with no three point line and no shot clock.
I wish college basketball was still played with an up tempo style of play.

Can anyone alert me when it will be played on ESPN Classic or tell me where I can get a copy of it in its entirety? I'd love to see it.

Try calling WBTV in Charlotte who broadcasted this game. A studio fire destroyed the last 5 minutes and overtime of this game.
