this is brilliant. i have been maintaining a 75gl FW aquarium for 4yrs now. only plants, fish, a bit of air, bacteria and co2 fert during only the day period. my decorative swords, etc... throw flowers and babies approx every 6mo. as a suggestion cat fish such as the ordinary sucker fish are extremely dirty and as the general rule 1 gal per 1" of fish their rule is more like 3gal per 1" of fish. they can also exceed 20" as adults 5 plants per fish seem to work well.
For every pound of feed they extract 5 usable output stream, fish, worms, solider flies, vegetables and chickens. Each a highly valuable product in their own right.
With my experience with aquaponics for two summers you establish the system and it pretty much takes care of itself. Hydroponics is different you typically want a ph of about 5.5 to 6.5 this is unfortunately too low for your nutrient producer (fish). The big thing is the system feeds itself, if you do it correctly, you don't need to buy expensive nutrient systems which usually rely on fossil fuels. Like the person said before me its important you establish you bacteria first (nitrospira) first.
@Frydaze1 Seems like monitoring the Ph would be very dificult as some days you would have more fish waste than others. How difficult is it to keep Ph levels at a point where fish and plant are happy?
@stt60 pH swings aren't that sudden or that drastic unless you've got something going wrong. When first establishing a new system, while the beneficial bacteria are getting established, the pH gets rather high. It's common to start a system without fish or plants until this step is complete and it settles down. After that, a healthy system usually has a VERY slowly decreasing pH which you can buffer by keeping eggshells or oyster shells in the system. Weekly tests are sufficient.
Charlie, you are such an inpiration! This was hands down the best presentation on the possibilities of aquaponics I've ever seen. In fact, it was the best presentation on aquaponics in general I've ever seen. Bravo!

I rather enjoyed his presentation. I would be interested in seeing how he gathered the funds necessary to secure and outfit his space.

I'm delighted to see that TED has sponsored an Aquaponics lecture.
Some HIQ folks need a bit of the intellectual snobbery factor to consider an idea.
This presentation is ideal for them.

@Fwuzeem Loved the talk all the same though, my mind is racing with ideas! Are there tutorials on what to buy and how to setup with Aquaponics?

Well done! I have a small AP system, and you've just given me even more ideas for making it more efficient.
But more importantly you've provided a great video to explain to people what it is I'm doing and why (and hopefully why they might also).
