Could the crowd possibly have known they were cheering too loud? It's unfortunate for Simona that she was performing right as a home crowd favorite was, and subsequently had her music drowned out; she did well despite this and more power to my favorite Romanian gymnast. But the crowd really wasn't doing anything wrong. They watched and cheered for the gymnasts they paid to see, and if they missed out on something great because of it, then too bad for them.
Wow, I never got to see this during the Olympics :-) I knew that she tied for the highest score of the Olympics here but this is sad because no one was even watching this routine :-(. This was such an incredible performance even over all the cheers for Moceanu!!
I'm an American and I loved the MAG 7 but watching this all these years later I have to say this crowd was out of control. There is no way that Simona could have heard her music for the entire 2nd half. I think that actually hurt her score.
Am I missing something? Her performance in the AA seemed identical to this one (and a little better actually). She gets a 9.737 but a 9.887. What am I not seeing?
@steelersboy2009 I know its crazy..its like Roza's floor she did alright in the AA even though she couldn't hear her music she completed the routine without major mistakes and ended on time but still got a 9.687...its like she got punished because the crowds were loud lol...I don't get it till this day..but scoring was crazy all over..if Lilypod didn't bend her legs on UB she would have scored a 9.9..thats crazy.
They don't go to the Olympics to be cheered by the crowd, they go to get scored by the judges based on the performance of the athlete. To say the crowd is being rude is just ignorant.

It's kinda sad and very rude that it looks like the crowd is ignoring her and almost all the other athletes from other countries, but then USA teams perform and they keep full concentration and scream like there us no treading tomorrow, I know this olympics is in USA and stuff but they could at least like also cheer for the other athletes it just looks like they r doing all that hard work and nearly getting ignored
I think Simona could appreciate that so many people were excited about a gymnastics competition! The crowd was cheering Dominique Moceanu as she stuck her beam dismount, and she was also the last American to perform on beam in a series of solid beam routines. Beam is known as a nerve-racking event, so the crowd was relieved it was over and that it ended well! I don't consider that disrespectful.
@KimZfan They were screaming at the top of their lungs, distracting every other gymnast performing. This is not the only exercise they did that during, check out roza's AA floor (she came away in tears) or milo's team floor. They were told to quite down as many coaches complained of the crowd. The crowd was also only cheering like that for American's, how in the world can you possibly call that respectful?
@gymnasticsloverxoxo I stand by my previous comment. The crowd wasn't doing anything to spite the non-American gymnasts. Most of the audience was there precisely to root for the American gymnasts and see some good gymnastics, and the Americans were hitting routine after routine! So what do you expect the crowd to do...suppress their excitement??
@KimZfan Yes, exactly what you said. They cheered like that for the American's and only the American's. I am American and I find this crowd ridiculous, disrespectful and all around shameful. Tim Daggett (an American commentator) said that it was the worst crowd he had ever heard. In Beijing did the crowd cheer like that for their team who were also winning? No, they had respect.
@gymnasticsloverxoxo I get that you're a bleeding heart, but Simona was clearly less affected by the crowd than you (for sure). She performed particularly well in this routine and received the highest floor score in the entire women's competition (shared only by Lilia). Also, I'm pretty sure this was one of the LARGEST gymnastics crowds ever (if not the largest), thus the high volume of cheers! The Beijing crowd was loud at times also, but who cares?
@KimZfan Did you not notice that she missed her double turn 1:05 because she lost concentration, something the judges could have deducted quite a bit for but gave her the benefit of the doubt because of the crowd. Roza came off the floor in both team and AA in tears because she could not hear her floor music so clearly she was effected by it, does that seem fair to you? Also like I said before the crowd was told many times to quite down so clearly I am not the only one bothered by this crowd...
@gymnasticsloverxoxo Roza performed her TEAM floor routine WITHOUT the crowd cheering for an American. She made those errors on her own! And give the athletes some credit! They know they aren't competing in a vacuum! They know they need to concentrate on their performances at all times!
Before Simona's floor routine, she had already heard the crowd cheer several times. She wasn't SHOCKED by it! She may have felt ignored by the crowd and annoyed, but disrespected? I don't think she felt that.
@KimZfan The thing is, I understand what you are saying and your attempted diplomacy, but the problem is not people cheering and being excited, thats natural and ofcourse people would be over joyed..... But I think as a non-american (Im English) it is something that the rest of the world dislikes about America, the overly loud overly brash, without grace and full of arrogance style attitude,.... and the TOTALLY over the top 'celebrating' in a sport of concentration and precision is just so bad.
@tomsk14 you are correct.i have a question : what gymnast from gb to watch for olimpics because i heard Couch Octavian Belu said that great britain have a very good sistem and that they will be a powerful contender in 2012 olympics .And who is the head couch?
You have to give Simona respect for being able to perform under such circumstances. The crowd were so partisan it was disgusting. Their actions really put a lot of the gymnasts from the other countries off. It is one thing wanting to win. It is another to be so blinded by that fact that you make the competition unfair.
The actions of the audience here was so disgusting. They were even told they had to stop cheering so loud and they didn't. The annoying thing is, probably about 80% of the people in the crowd have no clue about gymnastics, and only came because they heard that USA had a chance at a gold medal.
excuse me? im american and i have respect for europeans, and russians and other countries that would stick their noses to me if they knew i was american. and also...the us 08 olympic team proves you wrong too. They respected the chinese gold medal and said they were th ebtter gymnast that night and age didnt matter. Maybe you should get some respect for yourself and have respect for others.
@stevenh622 The funny thing is when China did the same exact thing during Ksenia Afanasyeva and Ekaterina Kramarenko's routines in Beijing, no one was bitching. When American crowds cheer for their own gymnastics team making history, it's utterly rude and uncalled for, but when other countries do, it's patriotic. Yeah, OK.
hang on, is it just me or did she leave out a full turn after her triple twist (same mistake she made in the all around). That way, her routine should've had a 9.9 SV, right?! Maybe even the judges missed that due to the noise, or perhaps they gave her a little bonus gift for performing under such deafening screams.
@sqekcx yes i have a lot more respect for her as well. I'm american and I'm a little bit ashamed at seeing the way hey acted. Yes it's very exciting when your home team is doing good but you also have to be respectful of the other teams and not so damn loud
She(Simona Amanar) had to performe a BB routine under the presure of that stupid scream "Comme on, Dominique!" A repeated sound... But she(Amanar) was damn good!
Yeah we were a bit barbaric in that audience back then, believe me. I was there and I remember watching Moceanu dismount off the beam and I'm like "Man I feel bad for the other competitors this cheering is extremely loud!" So I just clapped for Moceanu. The cheers for Strug on her 2nd infamous vault were just deafening!
I for one, try to enjoy life instead of being uptight and judgemental about everything. You live longer.
Anyway --Back on point. Awesome routine. And if you came from a country where 50,000 people came out to see a gymnastics meet, you'd cheer for your country as well. And I'm sure it would be about the same.
no it wouldn't. Americans are loud and obnoxious and they have no sense of propriety. They act like buffoons and monkeys and this is a perfect example of that.
This is my favorite floor music of all time! No kidding! :) And...Simona's performace was awesome! I tried to imitate her all the time when I was a kid...lol
She actually should have incurred a deduction (or decrease in SV) for only doing a single turn instead of the required double turn. The deduction was not taken here, but it was taken in the AA, which is why she scored 9.737 there after equally strong tumbling.
In her third pass, she crossed her legs, which I think may have been the only deduction the judges took off from her. She got three 9.9's and on 9.85, giving her a score of 9.887, which tied for the highest score of the Olympics.
the american gymnasts looked good on those olympics the audience was bed, full of disrespect, nowhere in the world happend things like that, not even in the comunist countries
Americans in general tend to get more excited about things. Not just sporting events but concerts, etc. I'm sure they meant no disrespect to the other teams but when one of our own--who happens to be the country's favorite gymnast at that moment--hits a routine that's well executed, they couldn't help but just go nuts. I'm so impressed by Amanar though. Even with all of that, she nailed everything. She's awesome.
Yes, And if you look back on here, people kept telling me ' wait for beijing, all host nations do it', but did the chinese scream the place down with inconsiderate behaviour... NO. Shame on you USA
"Yes, And if you look back on here, people kept telling me ' wait for beijing, all host nations do it', but did the chinese scream the place down with inconsiderate behaviour... NO. Shame on you USA"
The Beijing fans screamed as loud as 18,000 people can scream. There were 30,000 people in the Georgia Dome.
The Chinese fans weren't oblivious to other nationalities, they didn't scream while others were performing and drown out the music. They didn't all rise to their feet when Li Shanshan finished her beam routine, which was also intimidating in Atlanta.
"The Chinese fans weren't oblivious to other nationalities, they didn't scream while others were performing and drown out the music."
Yes they did. With only 18k people and 3 athletes performing in team finals they just didn't have a chance to get as crazy as the Atlanta crowd but they still got pretty excited.
"Stop copying and pasting it makes you look like a fool."
I find copy paste to be a useful technique. Beijing Olympic organizers apparently felt Chinese fans needed to be coached in order to understand "rules, regulations and self conducts." Google "crowd nightmare beijing" if you don't know what I'm talking about. American audiences received no coaching. Probably because organizers did not fear being embarrassed by rioting or booing. 30k people being loud is not bad behavior.
Actually. I was in attendance at 1999 Worlds. In China. The crowds were loud, unruly, and cheered when other nations made mistakes and fell off events. I actually remember in team finals russia was on beam, and the chinese were chanting "fall, fall"
So every nation has their own "little quirk" Fuck it.
I cant even see my own comment on here that you've replied too, but I can guess....
I have heard many times the 99 worlds were loud and noisy, but why would a chinese crowd be shouting an english word to a russian team? doesnt make sense. And if they were, thats unacceptable too, dont justify this crowds behaviour with 'two wrongs make a right'.
The chinese shouldnt have done it there, and the Americans sure has hell shouldnt have done it.
I think you'll find gymnasts are trained to do gymnastics. When had a crowd ever before or after been this loud? the LA 84 crowd were not this loud,....so how could the gymnasts be trained for this.... Regardless, I do not change my stance, this behaviour is totally unacceptable and whilst I understand people cheering their own teams, this is gymnastics and not football or baseball, you need to concentrate in gymnastics and the organisers should've insisted on it.
sideshowdee: Well you can thank the IOC for letting a redneck hick city like Atlanta for hosting these Olympic games. I'm just surpised that no one in that rowdy crowds were shooting their rifle in the air when they're cheering.
@socalazn168 Atlanta isnt a redneck hick city Ive been there and its a majority of black people. But I can see that if it was gonna be in the US maybe a more classier city like new york, dallas, chicago...
@socalazn168 im from houston, are you saying im fiercly patriotic and rowdy? ive always thought the olympics were the worlds best gymnast all competing together respectfully, reguardless of stereo types. any true gymnastics fan would understand that...
while this routine is happening...Dominique Moceanu in on the beam becase if you watch Moceanus team optional routine... you here the music and the crowdn routes for her dismount at the same point in both routines...
She has a vault named after her, and thats the only move I know she has named after her. Its a 2.5 twisting Yurchenko. Jade Barbosa, Cheng Fei, and Hong Jong Su (I think thats her name) also perform it.
She scored 9.887 for this - highest score in the whole Olympics. But notice the judges didn't deduct her for failing to show a double spin. She was lucky there!

Stop copying and pasting it makes you look like a fool.
Its nothing to do with the crowd venue, its about rules, regulations and self conducts.
The Americans were practically encouraged to behave badly.
' GO AMERICA, FUCK YEAH! '

30k people being loud is not bad behavior.

well they screamed louder when the chinese hit their landings.

It was the organisers duty to enforce this.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Oh come off it!
As a gymnast you are trained to deal with these situations. And any crowd can get loud with there cheering. So please, save it.
RothdeMan 2 years ago
I think you'll find gymnasts are trained to do gymnastics. When had a crowd ever before or after been this loud? the LA 84 crowd were not this loud,....so how could the gymnasts be trained for this.... Regardless, I do not change my stance, this behaviour is totally unacceptable and whilst I understand people cheering their own teams, this is gymnastics and not football or baseball, you need to concentrate in gymnastics and the organisers should've insisted on it.

sideshowdee: Well you can thank the IOC for letting a redneck hick city like Atlanta for hosting these Olympic games. I'm just surpised that no one in that rowdy crowds were shooting their rifle in the air when they're cheering.
socalazn168 2 years ago 3
@socalazn168 Atlanta isnt a redneck hick city Ive been there and its a majority of black people. But I can see that if it was gonna be in the US maybe a more classier city like new york, dallas, chicago...
gymLYYFE 2 years ago 2
@gymLYYFE Well, the majority of the audiences in the Georgia Dome were white. But probably southern people tend to be fiercely patriotic and rowdy.
socalazn168 2 years ago
@socalazn168 im from houston, are you saying im fiercly patriotic and rowdy? ive always thought the olympics were the worlds best gymnast all competing together respectfully, reguardless of stereo types. any true gymnastics fan would understand that...

That crowd was sooo goddamn biased. ughhh

there's a skill named after her. what is it?? cause shawn johnson is supposedly doing it and i want to know what it is! thanks.

She has a vault named after her, and thats the only move I know she has named after her. Its a 2.5 twisting Yurchenko. Jade Barbosa, Cheng Fei, and Hong Jong Su (I think thats her name) also perform it.

Podkopayeva scored a 9.887 as well. I've never been keen on Amanar's 'choreography,' or dance. Awesome tumbler though.
dyingproof 5 years ago
She scored 9.887 for this - highest score in the whole Olympics. But notice the judges didn't deduct her for failing to show a double spin. She was lucky there!
Doug1233 5 years ago
She got deducted for that in the AA; her routine was marked out of a 9.90.
