Ah! fabulous memories and the wonderful Phil Starr what a mentor.I remember sharing a dressing room with Phil in the ninetys when I performed at the Oriental on Sundays Phil was always such a nice man .
Sassy, Yes Phil was an absolute joy - and we do remember seeing you at the Oriental. On one occasion you came over, sat on my lap and jiggled up and down! Shame we can’t turn back time.
Ohhh my darling Phil. I sang with him and the great JB just days before he left us. We had a great chat that night, tragic to think it was to be our last. Incredible to hear him again, his like will never be seen again. Gawd rest ya love, a bona homi if there ever was one.
i've heard so much about phil starr. her recording of the od bazaar in cairo was used at a TG friends funeral, and it raised many a smile at the sad occasion.
to whoever said its sad we've lost so many of the old girls, i can only echo that sentiment.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! It's a shame that we have lost so many of the 'girls'. There are, in my opinion, very few of todays drag queens that are truly worthy of the title 'Queen'. It's a shame that todays young gay men will miss out on this part of our heritage thank you for capturing a snapshot of this wonderful man and posted it here for posterity.
Thank you dollyknockers for your kind comments. I cant agree with you more - I never failed to be entertained by Phil (and Dockyard Doris), they can never be surpassed, or forgotten.
There is another very important thing that these recordings have captured...Polari! It wasn't until I listened a second time that I noticed how he has used bits of polari as he talks. Although 'Julien & Sandy' used loads of it in their radio scripts, it was nice to hear it here being used as a natural part of his language. Another part of our (a bit presumptuous of me to include you)heritage and gay history that younger members of the community will never know about. Again, thank you!
Yes its good to hear Phils spontaneous use of polari. Phils long career must have encompassed the heyday of polrai in the 1960s so Im sure it would have been second nature to him. I hope theres a few out there that will keep the language alive for a while yet.
I have another recording of Phil that Ill put on Youtube in the next few weeks (split into five 10 minute parts), although I am a little disappointed that there havent been more viewings to date.

Also good to hear the lovely Michael introduce Phil,
Don & Michael were famous for building the Oriental pub up to a fabulous cabaret pub, Michael also sadly missed.
