that's how 80% of Taishanese say it lol I'm guessing you say "Yi Ai Lei" for Italy.. cuz only Taicheng, Dajiang and Shuibu use the "ei" vowel, where as the rest of Taishan (chonglou, sijiu, baisha, etc..) use the "i" vowel. Example: Ni (you), Fi Gi (airplane), Mi Gok(america), etc
Hello Jay! Thanks for sharing this video and for keeping hoy san wah alive. I guess my dialect of hoy san wah is a little different. If I heard you correctly, you pronounced the word for "big" by saying "uh." My dialect of hoy san pronounces it as "ay." I know PC mikes are seriously lacking in quality, but do you think in the future you can re-do this video with a better mike? That would be wonderful. Thanks again!
:x to be honest, i can't really tell the difference between taishan city taishanese and guanghai taishanese xD both sounds the same to me ;-; my dad is from guanghai (though he speaks guangzhou canto at home), but i live in taishan city when i go back to china ._.;;; maybe i should concentrate more when my dad speaks guanghainese x)
well. my dad can speak taishanese. and his tongue is like against his teeth. and it makes this raspy sound wen he speaks. guanghai taishanese is just like guang zhou chinese but with a lower tonee. .____.''

please improve the audio and if possible make a video of the movement of the mouth while pronunciating the words, I think that will help a lot.
Thanks.

Taishanese is so hiliarious the accent always gives me a smirk. Its funny, certain words are just used differently.

我是台山来的。 我讲的是台山话, 但是现在连广东话也旧了。 将来用的是国语。读 NYTIMES "IN CHINATOWN, SOUND of the FUTURE is MANDARIN."

umm.. big is pronounced like Guangzhou Cantonese "Dai" but without the "D"... so it's "Ai" for Big.
jaychow21 3 years ago
@jaychow21 to be more exact, the "D" has already been omitted. So an example like 地方 which should be Di Fong has become "i fong" (yi fong)
