Well, in the book. Amy is saved. I don't quite remember if Ted was the one who saved her though. Anyway, one of the first time I see a movie changing the ending of a movie so much. In the book, Stephen King even manages to make you doubt that Mort is schizophrenic.

@stephengatelyfan Actually, there's an alternate ending that's pretty cool. You know how the camera stops going down into the ground when it gets all black? The alternate goes past that, and it shows the bodies. They're whole, just gray and... well covered in roots. I'll send you the link in a message.

When I first saw the movie I didn't like it that much, thought it was boring compared to other Depp movies. But now that I've watched it again after I've informed myself a lot about doppelgangers in movies over the past month, I think that this movie belongs to the best of the best that deal with identity problems! In the book (the movie is based on a book by Stephen King - amazing novel !) the ending is very, very different !

Mort doesn't manage to kill Amy and Ted, the police arrives and shoots Mort dead. And I remember feeling really sorry and sad , even knowing that he was a complete psycho...

You should read the book, it's awesome.

Well, decomposing bodies technically become fertilizer for the plants. Their bodies become the fertilizer for the corn that he's eating. There you're right. He wasn't crazy though, he had a psychotic break that resulted in his mind creating an alternate personality in order to deal with things, thoughts, actions, etc. Mental disorder, not technically crazy. :)

The story they both wrote was sorta how Shooter was created, Except Mort wrote about a diffrent ending Shooter didn't like Mort had to kill his ex-wife and bury her in the "secret garden" and plant corn there and eat the corn. The movie was about a story, and how well or poorly written. The problem is, although the cinematic elements were very polished and fairly effective, and Depp was OK, the plot is tired and I knew almost from the beginning what the key "surprise" plot element was going to be. A very tired story here, and so a disappointment. I don't know if this story was written when this sort of plot was new, or if, like his literary avatar in this movie, he's just a hack.
