My God, he's just perfect. His chord voicings, his lead articulation, his tone and his reharmonizations. I wish we still had a talent like him around today.
Actually, Joe used a very small pick AND his fingers. In an interview in one of the Guitar Magazines, he said that he would break a small Fender "jazz" pick" in half, and just use the pointed end held between his thumb and index finger while using his other fingers for chord stabs.
It's not just about the tone. Using your fingers makes walking bass lines while playing chords easier to do. If you want two or more independently moving lines, you better be great at hybrid picking, playing fingerstyle, or both.
thats kinda iggnorant to say " thats way difficult". its your own thing. he probably thinks using a pick is harder u know? its more about the sound and tone from your fingers. its a warmer tone. anyway idk ya. joe pass kicks ass
@charlesmdk Yeah he was awesome. Check out user jreichbart here on youtube for another guy who plays finger style. I do that too, but nowhere in the same universe in terms of skill :D
@charlesmdk On this song and album he is actually doing both finger-style and pick. Instead of using his thumb, first, second, and third fingers, he is holding the pick between his first finger and thumb and uses his pinky as well to make up for the lost fourth finger. You can see him using this technique in the dvd "The Genius of Joe Pass" which include three songs from montreaux concert 1977 in which he incorporates this technique. Virtuoso 2 is an example of mostly pure finger-style.
Joe Pass possessed more of the soul of Django Reinhardt than any picker.

He's clearly using a combo of both a pick and his fingers.

The best, my favorite jazz guitarist, He was amazing, and he played this with fingers, no picking, that's way more difficult.
