I agree that the beggining of Fallout 3 was incredible. I have never seen a game where iit starts you of as a child, shows a little bit of you growing up and giving you some good choices. I think it is epic when you first leave The Vault and you're blinded by the light, and slowly you see the emense post-apocaliptic world....Nice.
