  • Priceless!

Never knew Batman was that old!

I like it, 'cause it reminds me of the animated series from the 90's WHICH are the best animated version of the batman.

Can you imagine a Batman Silent film?! I'd love to see THAT!

  • lol such terrible oldfashion acting

this is why i don't like old movies (b&w)

  • @Herrer85 A lot of old movies don't have terrible acting.

  • @BatMak23 Terrible wasn't exactly the word i was looking for. I mean all the acting looks so, unreal. More like forrced acting

  • @Herrer85

I love old movies. I think the old fashioned acting is part of their charm and the B/W helps set the mood. I recommend everyone watch "The Mark Of Zorro" 1940 which according to the comics is the movie Bruce Wayne saw the night his parents were killed. It is basically Batman just with a new name and costume. I can think of a ton of great old classics.

  • 1:47 "F--- you guy that is falling, save yourself."

  • Robin's dressed as Doctor Horrible at the end.

  • batman can't fly

    what a loser lols

  • I guess they call Robin the 'Boy Wonder', because that boy wondered where he was at after he got dropped by anonymous thug #2. Wow! I thought Batman & Robin were world class martial artists!

  • batman's undi look so tight

  • lol At Robins fro.

  • Why is Robin getting his ass whooped so badly in the beginning?

LOL @ the Japanese villain looking Mexican or Spanish, though.

  • Robins head is huge!

  • @FreakinShniZ Yes it is.

  • They knew how to get thrilling opening music even in 30s.

  • Batwank more like.

  • this is my first time watching this and i dont know if the baterang existed in the 40's but i thought batman was gonna wip out a baterang aim it towards the ledge of the building and he'll zip right back up but he got saved by the thing attached to the building(i don't know what it is called) anyways........oooohhh that has got to hurt!!!

  • suprised how u.s movie industry hadnt stopped working in period of WW II

  • @cavic4life

Some was government sanctioned stuff to help keep up morale. Why you see alot of movies like these and musicals and lots of comedies. This was a great time for alot of second tier actors as many actors ended up drafted or going of their own accord, leaving gaps others filled.

  • This wasn't a "show", 'Honest'....in the sense of it being a "TV series" (there were no TV shows on the air, on whatever TV stations WERE in operation during World War II). This was a theatrical serial, released in 15 chapters, one per week. You saw it in a movie theater, inbetween a cartoon, a newsreel, a "selected short subject", some "coming attractions" previews...and possibly an "advertising film"...and then came the "feature presentation".

  • That's not the bat-belt! It's a bat-girdle!

  • 1:04

  • lol, they stamped his forehead with a bat

  • The costumes are goofy but still menacing because Batman and Robin must be crazy. if you were kidnapped and taken to a dungeon by those guys, you'd talk too!

  • LOL robin got fuckin dropped

  • Robin (in civies) reminds me of Bud Bundy from Married with Children!

Well, this has better costume designs and seems a lot less campy than the later series with Adam West, though that series has it's memorable points, too.

  • From Batman 1943 until Batman Arkham Asylum 2010. Ufff...

  • Robin looks like Eraserhead

  • =D

  • LOL at 1:48

  • its funny everyone putts down the chris nolen batman movies but ill bet these same people will be first in line at the theater when the next one is released .

oh and nolen doing superman would be a good thing just my opinion

  • And I thought 60s Batman was lame....

  • This is packed full of LULZ...

"Come along fella, you're going with us to the Bat's Cave" ...Wait, isn't that kidnapping? Not to mention that batman just survived a 20-something story fall and was saved by scaffolding. Good thing too, if he'd fallen ALL the way to the ground, he might have been hurt

..."You don't mind being left alone with these bats, do you?" WTF are bats gonna do to him? They didn't bother to tie him down either. RUN!

I'd point out more, but I'm running out of space here

  • OMG 4:50 was so funny when bruce and dick suprised alfred with that ray gun

  • I hate that weird jump-cut when Linda's talking to Bruce.

I have an earlier "cleaned up" version and a later one where the Japanese insults remain, from which this clip appears taken.

What they removed was Dick getting so frustrated with Bruce's playboy bit on the phone, he shakes his fist in Bruce's face like he's threatening to pop him one.

  • So when this was released on DVD, did they "clean up" some of the period racism? For example, by re-recording the narration and/or character voices?

  • Ahhhh...criminals are such a cowardly and superstitious lot...!

  • Shiny disco utility belt.

  • 1:02 EPIC FAIL

  • for a serial that's supposed to be serious its halirous

  • i bought the dvd and i was watching it... i fell asleep.

  • Geez, I've seen much better cotumes on trick or treaters.

  • Got to admit, this 15 yr old Robin sure puts up a fight.

Neat touch, Alfred reading a detective comic book.

  • The Batman having a sense of humor, thats weird!

  • lol, Batman is from Boston (thats a Bostonian accent, right?)

  • the fights look much more realistic than those shitty pathetic gay dances of later batman series

  • Batman is bad ass here. I love this version of Batman so much.

  • bahaha batmans an asshole in this one :P hilarious!

  • Well, it's better than Christopher Nolan's movies.

  • @flapdoodle64

There's talk that Warner Brothers is considering getting Christopher Nolan to relaunch the Superman series.

    Big mistake.

Not only are his Batman movies over-rated, but hiring a director from another popular series didn't work for them when they hired Bryan Singer, director of the X-Men movies for Superman Returns.

Personally, I wished they would hire All American Clint Eastwood or Joe Dante. Dante was doing the creepy comedies before either Tim Burton or Sam Raimi.

  • ohmy word! look at the size of robins head!

  • loolclassic

  • I prefer this over the Dark Knight, at least the story is more plausible and the characters are more relatable.

  • Douglas Croft was the only live action robin that I didn't find completely obnoxious.

  • @cartoonfan1920s Dont be an idiot.

  • @cartoonfan1920s Well batman went off in many archs, to fantasy yet with a touch of realism.

  • @cartoonfan1920s this is even more realistic

  • @cartoonfan1920s wow really?

  • @cartoonfan1920s I agree with the character part, but not so much with the story. I don't think Nolan's style revolves around relatable characters, but he does often tell complicated stories that tie in themes by using characters as narrative devices. Nolan discusses philosophy and intelligent perspectives on themes in his films and not so much focus on emotional depth of characters. It's a bit frustrating at times, but still amazingly good.

  • I like this Batman's way of extracting information. Leave bad guys with the bats!

  • They did the same thing here as on my dvd copy. When Linda is talking to Bruce on the phone, and Bruce was acting like the sulky playboy, because she wanted to go to the Blue Parrot by herself, there's an awkward cut where one of the bad guys talking to her earlier is seen on the phone with her, AFTER they've hung up.

On the VHS version, they showed Dick Grayson getting so frustrated with the bored playboy on the phone schtick, he was shaking his fist in Bruce's face.

  • its darker then the 1960 version yet stupid as hell

  • Cheap set at 2:04

  • i dont get it, did they make batman funny? or were they being serious? i mean im watching this and their moves are freakin hilarious, i mean just look at the 1:00 and batman's fail entry =o

  • Batman and Robin look like two guys dressed up for a masquerade party. Haha!

  • Taking criminals to the BAT CAVE? Dx

  • @oOiiPlayMSOo

This serial created the Bat Cave. Up to this point all Bruce Wayne had in the comic books was a series of tunnels.

And although Alfred was already in the comic books, he was comedy relief, and a roly-poly sort of character, but was redesigned to look like William Austin in this serial, whose name doesn't even appear in the credits.

  • Bellissimo.

  • has joker ever been in this show??

  • Batman looks like he got a kingsize wedgie.

  • music theme intro is great!

  • lol this was what america did while europe was in war, thanks for sharing

  • Man, Bruce Wayne is a dik for firing that gun just to scare Alfred. It blasted a freaking safe door for chrissakes.

  • As silly as this may seem, it's still a lot better than the 1960's Batman TV show. At least this Batman is serious.

  • the 1960 version never supposed to be searious. its pure comedy

  • From what I've read, YellowTelaviv, the 1960's version was supposed to be serious but they changed their minds and made it campy.

    A shame in my opinion.

  • Wait...don't leave me here alone...there's a giant penny in the corner, right next to the robotic dinosaur...!!!!

  • "What would you two birds do if Batman wasn't around"

Batman fropped off the guy on the doorstep and the police still didn't know he was part of the gang if Batman didn't leave a note............

  • thank you for share this with us.

  • before this the batcave was just an underground tunnel in the comics.

so your seeing the true begining of the batcave here.

  • "just some of my bats" PAA HA HA !

  • OH god this is hilarious!! AH HA HA HA HA HA!!!

  • This is terrible XD Bruce Wayne makes me want to hit him soooo badly :rotfl:

  • this was.....bad...i hate that batman costume lol. those masks are awful

  • "get out and try and find a clue", now that's funny!!

  • Really to be honest the batman costume in the serial. You just want to WEAR THAT BADLY.

  • 4:06-5:14

    LOL.XD That's Messed Up, Bruce...

  • the crook interregated was the actor who played Charles Foster Kane's butler in Citizen Kane. He was also in a couple of Three Stooges shorts.

  • one of the scaffold guys apparantly fell off to his death!! Batman just ignores all and climbs the rope back to the roof.

  • I thought that I was the only one to notice that (lol). Those masks are awful, though.

  • the costume is okay comic book wise and the batcave is scary but the mask is shi

  • John Waters as Alfred

  • SHIT. Rubber Bats on Disembodied Strings are intimidating as Fuck.

  • WHATS UP WITH DICK GRAYSON'S HAIR?

  • nothing . it's curly. what's wrong with it..?

    this is the 1940s

  • What the hell is Bruce thinking...aiming that weapon at Alfred?

  • I know right... And they just laugh it off.

  • how long did this show last?

  • 15 chapters I think.

  • @Honest2theextreme mANY YEARS MATE. WE KILL THE JAPS. DAMN JASPION.

  • man were is the joker?....in these series?

  • J. Carrol Naish played a Japanese scientist/warlord/all around bastard, Doctor Daka in this particular series. Batman's debut on film was in 1943 while WW2 raged on, so they gave the Batman a Japanese nemesis!

The Japanese were the "bad guys" to America then, so this serial is definitely a product of it's time.

  • this is it people the introduction of the batcave.

before this there was just a tunnel under wayne manner connecting it to an old barn.

this makes it a full blown out cave which is intergrated into the comics.
