@peluche399: It's more about artistic interpretation than anything else, isn't it? That's the beauty of music: the interpretation is left up to the performer. Maisky is fabulous, but I happen, personally, to prefer Yo Yo Ma's recording of the Sarabande. In most cases, there is no right or wrong in music - just one way that sounds better than the other. It's the musician's job to choose what's right for him. :)
man he is good, i hope to become that good one day. Ever sice i got my violin ive been practicing till it hurts. His sound is so pure and his hands are really fast! bravo
I didn't realize they were easier on viola. I imagined it to be harder but maybe that's because I suck at violin lol. I'm only good at cello so.. But yeah, viola de pomposa(sp?) I think a lot of scholars believe was used for the suites. However I think a regular 4-string cello is destined to play these suites.
lol I know but if you knew anything, then you would know that the viola has the EXACT same strings that are one octave higher, so anything on the cello can be played on the viola, theoretically.
although these are cello suites, many scholars actually believe that they were written on a viola, as A)Bach was a violist, and B)they are considerably easier on viola, and very difficult on cello. Not sure if you were implying that they're harder to play on viola, but I can assure you that they are not
Well not much is know really about the 5 suites. When they were first found the people thought they were etudes lol. There are hardly any tempo markings, or even information on which instrument is to play them. Many people think it was a cello, violoncello piccolo, or possibly a viola as yes you are right, Bach was fond of the Viola. Only Bach knows.
taking a break from death metal... watching these vids again reminds me why I adore Bach so much and how amazing Maisky is

Pimp, P I M P.
This guy's got mad skillz.
I don't listen to much hip hop, but this reminds me of how awesome it can be when they sample classical/baroque and place it in that musical context.

ajaxhapsburg I think you're right... It should probably be slower. I like this with more elegance.
Nevertheless, superb performance... so clean!

I think the 5th set of suites are my favorite.
They all, however, are exceptional.
