This is by far my favorite movie of all time. Which is strange because I don't usually like sad films. Of course there is all of the amazing music, and the great humor, but in the end this is really a profoundly sad movie. However this last song and Andrea Martin's look of approval and pride @ 3:21 not only makes me cry, but makes me smile at the same time. I know that Hedwig will be alright with himself and his future.
Ubuntu has figured it all out. This song makes Ubuntu pass copious amounts of gas and throw up in his mouth. The passing of the gas in conjuction with the vomiting stimulates Ubuntu's vocal chords. Ubuntu makes involuntary "singing" noises when this song and video plays. Peace, love and jenkem. UBUNTU
This scene moves me to tears EVERY time I watch it. The song always chokes me up. "Breathe. Feel. Love. Give. Free. Know in your soul... like your blood knows the way... from your heart to your brain... KNOWS THAT YOU'RE WHOLE." Because you ARE whole, all on your own. Even though Origin of Love is a beautiful, amazing song, Hedwig/Hansel learns by the end of the movie/play that s/he is a whole person no matter what.
I've never even heard of this movie, I saw it at a movie rental store the one day and felt like I should watch it. So fucking glad I did, LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
This film, and all the songs in it are absolutely fantastic, i have been listening to the soundtrack on a loop for the past two days, everything about it has touched my heart. Props to John Cameron Mitchell, this is a masterpiece.
I honestly can say this is one of my favorite songs....EVER! Beautiful and meaningful! John Cameron Mitchell deserves way beyond any recognition given!
@epohe It's most likely a reference to Nona Hendryx of Labelle who belted out the fabulous song "Lady Marmalade," but it could also be a nod to Nona Gaye, Marvin Gaye's daughter.
The animated reprise at the end, is it meant to be saying that Tommy and Hedwig's fights/love/stuff were all part of their souls' attempts to reunify, and that somehow by crashing together in that big love/hate way they re-emerged as a conjoined being?
Does Tommy 'physically' die - though the two are unified in that Midnight Radio heaven dimension? Also, it suggests Hedwig was never a transsexual -- which is daring, which I love -- just a gay man who got tragically mutilated and had to adapt.
@Zythe My interpretation is that Hedwig realizes s/he does not need the wigs and makeup to be happier any longer. S/he is just accepting him/herself for what s/he is. Therefore, s/he can also allow the f2m char s/he has kept back to be who s/he is as well. (hence the passing off of the wig). Hedwig is letting go of the control s/he took from this person as a retaliation for the hurt and control s/he lost throughout his/her life.
@Zythe As for the reunion scene with Tommy Gnosis, my interpretation has always been that Hedwig finally realizes that s/he let Tommy take the music from him/her, but s/he got t back with Midnight Radio (finally writing a new song). Hedwig also realizes that everything s/he loved about Tommy were things s/he possessed herself and that s/he does not need another half because s/he is finally a whole person (hence the new tattoo of a whole face instead of a half).
@Zythe Oh and also I believe Hedwig finds his/her wholeness once s/he accepts him/herself for exactly what s/he is. Once s/he loves him/herself, s/he realizes s/he doesn't need Tommy anymore. Nor does s/he need to hold all that anger/resentment/shame/etc. It only harmed Hedwig, after all.
@Zythe As for the animated ending, I always saw this as a short recap of all the things Hedwig went through to feel whole again. ps - sorry for all the responses, the character limit killed me :)
@MsAudities What I love about this movie is that it's completely open and cryptic and you can read what you want to. Every time I see it I found new meaning to the story, there actually are lots of copper from the main story just mentioned. I hate when things are fully explaned in every detail - it's just a lack of confidence in the intuition of the viewer. I agree with your vision of the final Hedwig that is aware of her wholeness without Tommy and in consequence for the tatoo that's [...]
Also, I think the part with Yitzhak it's very meaningfull. Finally, after giving him her approval, Hedwig let him go and be what he always wanted be but never could because of the jealusy and egomania of her. He became a drag queen and shine into the crowd - I think it's him the lady in orange, isn't it?
In somehow I think Tommy it's just a simbolic part of Hedwig, the childish, insecure, coward part, that she finally can get rid of - it's like a bildungsroman.
@RadioMidnight1992I agree. The thing with Yitzhak though is that he is a female 2 male - opposite of Hedwig. The part is played by a woman. So Yitzhak also reminds Hedwig of him/herself. We often abuse or project more anger on people who have faults similar to our own or remind us of the things we hate about ourselves. Hedwig is not only setting Yitzhak free, but by the same token of appreciation, but is also accepting him/herself as well; letting go of the victim and the victimizer within.
@MsAudities I disagree. Yitzhak is a male transvestite who met Hedwig at an audition when they were trying for the same role. After they became lovers, Hedwig made Yitzhak stop dressing as a woman even though she did not want to stop. In this scene, when Hedwig gives him the wig he is allowing him to resume cross dressing. It is a release and an apology.
@MsAudities Ummmm Yitzhak is Male to Female, played by a female. But the rest of the stuff you said is a great way to think about the role and how Hedwig projects her anger at Yitzhak. I suppose the fact that they took out a deleted scene where Yitzhak does drag in competition with Hedwig made all this other realization possible. (It's on the DVD if you wanna see that scene)
I love this movie and I show it to anyone I can. This is probably my favorite song in the movie. Oh and I've heard that supposedly at this point hedwigs already dead that at least she died in the car crash. Kinda like the sequence at the end of All That Jazz. Walking off naked represented moving on into the next realm or whatever.
Perhaps I'm over analysing this, but isn't the background in this scene the same as the background in the first scene- like (s)he gets to start his life all over again, now that he's whole?
Or maybe I'm just a little obsessive over this movie...
all of these songs were performed live for the filming of the movie... that's what makes it EVEN BETTER. I saw the live stage show shortly after the movie, and it was just as amazing.
what is this musical called btw.. so that way i can watch it... the songs have touched me so mutch as in little as a couple of hourse.. and yet i came acrost one of there songs a couple of weeks ago.. but it stayed with me for this long that i had to look it back up. To bad it's not real...

I see a few similarites to John & Yoko. He mentions Yoko in the lyrics; the all-white room where J&Y sang Imagine and the all-white room where the song takes place, the unity of two different people being the same person in unity, and the last part of the song, where he's walking nude compares to a famous Yoko film called "Bottoms" where Yoko filmed different people walking and focused on their naked rear ends. I'm not saying the song was modeled after it, just that there are similaries...
No, I do not hold this as a secret, and I believe that it is wrong to for anyone to hold this film as a secret.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a gift to be shared, and I hope you do. I know I try. This is a gift that is not easily received in our world, but we must try.
This movie has been on my "watch before you die" movie list since this movie came out... it is truely amazing and i can't imagine a better rock and roll musical ever being made. I can't wait for the stage show to come around.
@MASEOLIO t tell you what mane...just imagine that hedwig is an average movie...then it would be like every movie.... just average...because thats what average is...all movie's are average...so there ya go every movie is like hedwig...average
Of course Yitzhack ends up being a hot girl in the end, after all he was played by a hot girl, and even though I saw it coming it still gives me a warm feeling when I see her crowd surfing.
@SgtBastard101 I think I read that Bob Mould was playing guitar for the movie. I really don't know if he was also there when the stage musical was brought about off-off Broadway. I doubt he was, to be quite honest.
@ShadrachWTF thanks for responding. Yay, yer probably right. The guitarist with the Gibson V, looks ah bit like Bob. Bob played V's back in the day. I don't think its him tho'.
this is the quintessential song of renewal and of finally rising from the depths of misunderstanding, oppression, etc. Hedwig is so brilliant because it contains every element of opera.. innocence, disillusion, redemption, renewal. And there is an element of satire... Mitchell acknowledges that each song is a cliche, yet he makes them fresh and we relate to them on some level. This is the most under-rated musical of all times.
@alisonk04 - Here's the comment I WAS gonna make: "Total rip-off of David Bowie's 'Rock & Roll Suicide,' but WHO CARES? It's transcendant!" -- But then I saw YOUR comment, where you say basically the same thing, but with an articulate clarity I couldn't quite achieve...
this is the first time we see hedwig really smile in the whole movie. :')

A secret? No.
No, I do not hold this as a secret, and I believe that it is wrong to for anyone to hold this film as a secret.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a gift to be shared, and I hope you do. I know I try. This is a gift that is not easily received in our world, but we must try.

Whenever I'm having a rough time, this soundtrack makes so many terrible things go away. A true lifesaver.

This movie has been on my "watch before you die" movie list since this movie came out... it is truely amazing and i can't imagine a better rock and roll musical ever being made. I can't wait for the stage show to come around.

I could watch this over and over and over again. The part Hedwig gives the wig to Yitzhack has so much feeling to it.
Suokeiju 1 year ago
Of course Yitzhack ends up being a hot girl in the end, after all he was played by a hot girl, and even though I saw it coming it still gives me a warm feeling when I see her crowd surfing.

oddly enough, I didn't encounter this song in middle school; nor high school... but I do have a similar reaction now.

Maybe I heard wrong, but somebody said Bob Mould is in Hedwig's band?! Or is it he just played the guitar parts for the soundtrack? Anybody know?
SgtBastard101 1 year ago
@SgtBastard101 I think I read that Bob Mould was playing guitar for the movie. I really don't know if he was also there when the stage musical was brought about off-off Broadway. I doubt he was, to be quite honest.
ShadrachWTF 1 year ago
@ShadrachWTF thanks for responding. Yay, yer probably right. The guitarist with the Gibson V, looks ah bit like Bob. Bob played V's back in the day. I don't think its him tho'.

All those strange rock n' rollers, misfits and losers out there, hold on to each other and lift up your hands.

this is the quintessential song of renewal and of finally rising from the depths of misunderstanding, oppression, etc.

@alisonk04 Fantastic comment.
