Wow, my BMI is about 15, and I'm going into a private inpatient unit with NHS funding for my bulimia. But I suppose that being involved with the Mental Health Services for the past 5 years (due to self harm, suicide attempts, EDs and BPD) has probably pushed this further than if I was just bulimic and seeing a GP for the first time...
I've been extremely underweight and in a hospital's ED unit and refed 5 times . My dr. and I both want to get me into a residential treatment center but my insurance denied me coverage. My Dr. wrote the whole letter sent them all my stats and they still refuse to budge. so right now I'm bouncing in and out of the hosp, living hell!
FYI, being in the US doesn't help you get treatment. Private insurers are even worse than NHS. They are only out to get money, so if your treatment isn't "medically necessary" or you don't need a locked psych ward for treatment, then you don't get it. But I do understand the frustration of not getting treatment because you're not underweight. I have only been underweight once for a short time, but I have had my ED for almost three years.
Love this topic! I think it is really important and often a misconception. You can be, as you said bea, 'healthy and curvy' but still have the eating disorder mindset. Bulimics are often people in the normal-overweight range. Thank-you for shedding some light and making this great video!

I feel that the whole "taking you seriously" stuff is pretty universal. Here in Toronto, it takes months and months of sitting on a waiting list before you get treatment. By then it could be too late. The only thing that is also very universal with this is that Money talks. If you have the Money to PAY for private treatment (or the insurance to cover private treatment) you still end up fighting and waiting and fighting some more.
I'm glad we don't have to pay over here (England). Although treatment is usually reserved for people with BMI'S as low as 13. It's annoying how you don't get taken seriously until you are emaciated.
Gah, it upsets me SO much how doctors just go by weight and don't even care about the mental aspect. Thats why so many young girls back out of treatment and get scared to ask, they are afraid of judgement because they arent 'thin' enough. Its so sad how the medical field doesnt recognize the mental part.
My doctors say they can't offer treatment unless i'm like a BMI 13 or something. which is fcking stupid. especially the fact they are the ONLY docs for like 5 miles.
BMI of 13?!? You will be dead (or at least very close to it) if you have to wait until a BMI of 13! That's crazy!!! PLEASE find a second opinion from a different doctor! xo~a
are you sure you were 25 lbs underweight? Your bmi was 17.7, so you were technically only 5 pounds underweight. Maybe 25 lbs under your GOAL weight?
