ok to answer everyone's arguement over the marines and navy. They are 2 SEPERATE branches with their own chain of command. the CMC or Commandant of Marine Corps is on the join chief of staffs much like the navy commandant...however the CMC REPORTS TO THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY. so in a way they are two different branches...but they both report to the secretary of the navy.

I'm baffled by how few people understand this.... The CNO (Chief of Naval Operations) has no authority over our CMC (Commandant of Marine Corps)

@dl30wpb i know what you mean, but in the book it states that the United States Marines are a department of the navy. The Marines are not separate. The branches of the Armed Forces are Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy. Although, on many sites such as the U.S. Army site it does say the Marines are a separate branch, but books such as my History of The United States Military state that the Marines serve under the navy.

All of the worlds Military forces train for different areas of combat. You can't even start to compare the SAS with the Marines. The SAS are a special Forces Unit while Marines have a more limited (specific) skill set and are designed to be fast and mobile in larger units. Delta force was based off the SAS so you would be better comparing them. Also Australian general infantry troops are up with the best armies of the world in terms of training as they have to make up for the lack in numbers.

During a bloody shootout in World War I, when some of the Allied forces were calling for a retreat (I think it was the French, but don't quote me on it), the US Marines - who'd pretty much just arrived in Europe and were eager to make a contribution - replied, "Retreat, Hell! We just got here!"
