tey wanted to photograph the crater only, so the image is formed from a mosaic of various pictures, enough to get the whole crater . If they wanted to capture a broader image, say a 360 degrees sphere around the rover, they could. If they don't want that, why loose time and take more pictures?

I disagree... cellular life on Mars would be significantly important, if considered in the grand scheme of our understanding of Life.
Right now, we only know of life on Earth, and nowhere else. The first life we find on a planet / moon outside of Earth is going to be one of the most important discoveries in history.
