Beautiful, underrated song by a terrific lyricist. I think it's got a strong "from the heart" feel, and it's a rare instance in which I prefer it to Meat Loaf's version.
There's no doubt that Jim is one of (if the) best song writers of his generation. I remember buying this in 'Thr Other Record Shop' in Inverness back in '82. A brilliant album.
I am a massive fan of Jim's work.......... This is the most outstanding piece of musical art ever...... his vocals are far superior on this track to the Meat loaf version......... Sorry Meat i'm still ya biggest fan....lol.....The power and passion with the slightly rough cut guitar are awesome........ shame fb doesnt have a love it button
@DoctorMetuza A more soulful version than Meats powerballad rendition. Personally I think the same as you - Steinmans voice is a bit thin and reedy but then again I prefer the guitar solo on this version
@DoctorMetuza Meatloaf covered this on... I think, the "Bad Attitude" album (if memory serves me correctly), but In my opinion, this version (actually sung by Rory Dodd, rather than Jim Steinman) is much better than Meat's!
this is one of the horniest songs i have ever heard the crecentio to the the stupendious climatic middle to the brilliant drum solo to the slow easy let down at the end brilliant give it 400/100
this is a better version but meatloaf can sing so much better than jim steinman... which is what they kinda figured for the bat out of hell 2 album.. steinman writing the songs with meatloaf singing them... and it worked cos it was a good album
@rowanstclair i agree the music on this version is better than meatloafs but meatloaf is a much better singer.. like doctormetuza said... this version with meatloafs vocals
I despise Meat Loaf's take on the song...it's so cold and heartless, and has horrible instrumentation. Butchered. This version is heavenly, one of the best pieces Steinman ever put out. One of my favorite songs. Ever.
SURF'S UP Composed by Jim Steinman Rory Dodd: Featured Vocals Davey Johnstone: Guitars, Mandolin Todd Rundgren: Guitar Solo, Backing Vocals Kasim Sultan: Bass, Backing Vocals Roy Bittan: Piano Jim Steinman: Assorted Keyboards Max Weinberg: Drums Jimmy Maelen: Percussion Backing Vocals: Rory Dodd, Eric Troyer Produced by John Jansen, Todd Rundgren and Jim Steinman
@Polepubfa FYI, English isn't the universal language, there are others. I've never studied chinese and even I can pick out enough of that comment to understand that he/she likes it.

This has got to be a brilliant funeral song, especially the way the guitar comes in at 2.15, very heart moving music, nothing like it nowadays......

It's great. I agree with banterdude. The outro is unexpectedly beautiful. Affirms the sanctity of love

@m0v13knut Yes, that's so true.
I wish we could sometimes read Jim's winebook! :) (A story goes that's there's one...)

I love the vocal on this. Sure Rory Dodd's voice is thinner than Meat Loaf's but it suits this song perfectly. Best version by a country mile for me.

Any other version is a travesty. Accept no substitutes. And just where the hell is a full-fledged Rory Dodd solo album, anyway?
Get on it, Steinman!... (and please keep your own voice OFF it!)
