  • This file has some serious sync issues and is incomplete.

  • THE VIDEO RUNNING TOO FAST AND OUT OF SYNC WITH NORMAL SOUNDING AUDIO?

  • me to thats my fav part when he dose the hat thing i try to do it all the time

  • LOVE this movie.

  • Yeehaw Charles Durning for president !!!

  • Charles Durning is in this movie for five minutes and he steals the entire thing. That's talent.

  • I know CD probably wouldn't agree, but I think this is his best work....the acting - timing - choreography --- PERFECT.!!

  • I feel that I'm stuck in this scene, as he's just like my boss. My co-workers and I are the confused reporters - never understanding a word he says. We use this video as our daily motivation, and to make us laugh. Otherwise we'd cry. Thanks for posting it.

  • I love this! This is the best representation of a politician I've ever seen!

  • ha ha ha greatest part in this movie... : )

  • I love to dance a little sidestep lol i love this movie and im only 14

  • This song makes me so happy for some reason...especially his little dance!

  • I would like to take a moment and thank all of our Presidents and any Congressional member throughout history for this moment of reality!

  • My FAVORITE! Fun for today.....

  • Who does Charles remind YOU of? I MISS Charles! This is his best bit EVER!

  • This was one of my favorite parts of the movie.

  • gotta learn how to do that sidestep

  • What an incredible talent this man possesses. My hat is off to him not only for his talent, but for his bravery and service to our great country, and to all his brethren who lie in graves far away from home, giving all so that this country and the world could remain free of evil and tyranny.

  • I LOVE THIS MAN!!!!!!!!

  • I was an extra in this scene, but only appear in the capitol rotunda portion briefly (I'm holding a roll of paper) though I saw most of the filming. It was my first experience on a movie set, and it's LONG and tedious! But yeah, Mr. Durning was amazing. To the best of my knowledge, the only Oscar nomination this movie got was his for supporting actor, but he didn't win.

  • He also played the voice of recurring character Francis Griffin in the animated series Family Guy until the episode Peter's Two Dads where the character died.

  • Did we know...

Charles Durning- Sgt US Army Rangers fought D-Day Omaha Beach (bloody beach) like in Saving Private Ryan...one of the first men to hit the beach. Wounded by German S-mine (orig Bouncing Betty landmine). Recovered in time for the Battle of the Bulge.

Awards: Silver Star, 3 Purple Hearts.

Guy is a f'ing STUD by any standard.

  • Wow, I love and admire Charles Durning so much. As an actor, a veteran, a person and now also as a musical artist! ;)

  • Wow, Doc Hopper really improved his showmenship!

  • He's an extremely talented performer. Watching him now dancing across the state as Gov. Pappy O'Daniel in Oh Brother!

  • I did not realize Charles Durning was this talented! Wow!

  • Met my Congressman today....It was alot like this...

  • I did'nt realise this guy was so talented, that was brilliant.

  • Is this the only scene Mr. Durning appeared in?

  • this is funny! :)

  • OOOOOO I love to dance a little sidestep. now they see me now they don't. He is the cutest little man i have ever seen!!

  • Po' folks like me have to go to the Worst little Whorehouse in Texas.

The end result is the same....it just comes along with more STD's.

  • Dolph Briscoe was a conservative Democrat, typcial Governor for Texas until the '90s. There was a rumor that he was completely out of it and that his wife actually called the shots. He was famous for disappearing to his ranch for long stretches of time without communicating with the press or making statements or decisions about anything important.

  • Oh, and the really funny thing about the whole Chicken Ranch story (a real whorehouse for many years in La Grange, Tx,) is that the Capitol Building in Austin is 100 times more of a whorehouse than the Chicken Ranch.

  • just like every political bozo the world over!

  • This movie is so cute....and this is ONE of my favorite parts. I would like to buy this movie but it's out of print already.

  • I love when he says "up on yall"

And i loove his 'oooooh' dance. xD

  • Am I the only one who's always mildly distracted whenever he puts his hat on sideways and then turns into it?

  • lol... no. that's the best part.

  • I know, when i watched the movie i lost it. =D hahah.

  • no!!! lol its the only thing in the entire movie that bothers me!!!

  • this song has made a permanent home in my head. i can't evict the lil bastard

  • Just an FYI to everyone who things Durning's character is a Republican.....

The character is actually based on Gov. Dolph Brisco, who's major claim to fame, other than being Governor of the Great State of Texas, was being able to talk for an hour without saying anything.

    And, Brisco was a....DEMOCRAT!!!

There - now the record is straight.

  • You have to bear in mind the time at which the story takes place, and the time for which Brisco is a representative. The values of both political parties have changed considerably in the decades since.

  • Yep, definitely a Texan....

  • i dont think i will ever get tired of that

  • hi everyone on writing class who is working on this

  • I luV'd that movie and the first time I saw it and watched him sing that song I just knew it immediately: It's the Republicans!

  • It sounds more like Bill Clinton and all politicians in general. Side Stepping is not really a partisan activity.

  • True. MOst of the okie Repubs do the most expensive hookers...the lower paid ones buy their BJs from cheap Robinson st. walkers. I guess it's just the level you consider...

  • The Rockefellers / JP Morgans / Rothschilds / Warburgs / etcs Gang declared WAR on the United States of America and a large part of the rest of the world many years ago. This Criminal Banking Cartel Gang is riding around in OUR Limousines and flying in OUR Gulf Streams and living in Our Mansions! Everything this gang has, they stole from We the People and many other countries! Not only that, but they want to Lord it over U.S. They want to control U.S.!

  • Does anyone else think George W. could have done this too LOL

  • No he couldn't .Instead of "Dancin a little side step".He'd be dancin on the side of a little 'step-side' pickup. And instead of side steppin the Q. about the "Chicken Ranch; It'd probably some thin' like,,,,Who doesn't like ranch & chicken?hehehe..

  • Magnificent1

  • love this could stop laughing at his ltlle stupid dance

  • Typical politician, no matter if they are from Chicago or whereever. Same B.S.

  • What does he say after "I like sweep around the wide step..." ?

  • "Cut a little swath and lead the people on."

Rather than just the Republicans, this is more like ALL polticians, left and right, from the president on down.

  • Indeed.

  • the ninja from texas!

  • Great number performed by a very talented guy.

  • This scene has a timeless quality about it as it satirizes politicians in a way we can relate to, whether on a national, state or local level. When this movie came out, people would say it was Jimmy Carter or Ronald Reagan.

I LOVE the expressions on the reporters' faces at 0:46/5:00. Priceless.

Stop the political debate and just enjoy the scene.

And I still say it's my boss. "What the h**l did he say? Same as usual, not a d**n thing."

  • This song explains alot about how politics are. Nobody wants to speak their mind, they skirt the issue till the know what the majority wants

  • I can;t believe that a funny little song from an old musical made youtube start raging about politics. Wow youtube, wow.

  • Oh and to ihatedemocrats..... Maybe if Bush had gotten "blown" while in office he would've been to busy to jack up the entire country. I'm just saying that if getting some in the oval office helps the President to do a better job, well then government should just hire some ladies to handle such delicate affairs.

  • The play is based on an actual brothel called the Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas. The establishment was closed after a newsman, the inspiration for Melvin P Thorpe in the movie, brought attention to it in his watchdog type show. He claimed that the place had ties to organized crime. Also, for those of you who enjoy ZZ Top, the song La Grange is also based on the infamous Chicken Ranch.

  • I agree totally with phillybrotha. The movie has NOTHING to do with current politics paricularly. I mean it is true that most political officials side step quite often, but this has no direct connection with either Obama or Clinton. I mean the movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, was released in the 1980s which was long before Clinton or Obama were Presidents. The movie was based on a Broadway play that I think may still be preformed today.

  • Metzae, you're the one who looks like a completely "stupid." If you bothered to read what I said, I never said it didn't have anything to do with political overtones; I said let's stop with the political overtones. But, what should I expect from a person who clearly is trying to use this as a means of making some point anonymously. You can't be that stupid and insipid. Here's a tip: If you have something of substance to say, write an editorial, not a meaningless comment on Youtube.

  • That's Obama alright, talking about health care!

  • I wonder is tom delay is going use that song & dance number when he's goes on dancing with the stars.

  • cskirby is your typical brain dead liberal democrat.

He refers to Clinton as "powers of awesomeness" even though the deal was made long before Clinton even got on the plane to North Korea.

Conveniently, he forgot to mention that Clinton got blown by his intern while he was president of the United States.

  • Oh, wow. You know when someone has a name like this one that their insight is going to be enlightening and intelligent.

  • Please shut up with the political overtones here. This is a great song which was part of a movie. Don't make it more than that. Get a life, idiots.

  • Ever heard that saying about people in glass houses?

What the hell do you think the song is about? It has no political overtones because it's CLEARLY about politics. I mean, seriously...are you that dense or do you just like trolling YouTube for ways to look stupid?

  • Hiding a brothel is a minor thing compared to modern politicians. Obama is Goldman Sachs and GM's whore and Bush was Halliburton and Exxon's whore. With either party it's corporate welfare to whoever puts them in office.

  • REPUBLICAN Mark Foley sent dirty messages to young males that worked for him, REPUBLICAN Mark Sanford had an affair, REPUBLICAN Larry Craig got caught jerking it in a bathroom, REPUBLICAN Paul Stanley had an affair with his intern, REPUBLICAN John Ensign had an affair with a campaign volunteer, REPUBLICAN David Vitter bought prostitutes with state money, REPUBLICAN Vito Fossella had an affair and a child with his mistress. But your right, everything is all Clinton's fault. Idiot.

  • And NOW Clinton has just used his powers of awesomeness to gain the release of 2 US journalists. WHERE WAS THE GOP IN TRYING TO SAVE THESE PEOPLE? Doing the sidestep, mixing more Kool-aid for you to drink. But again, that damn Clinton and his presidency is what is wrong with America today. Drink up moron.

  • All Totally True.

  • It's funny how this vid (politicaly speaking) is as accurate today as it was then.

  • This movie is on tv tonight..... thought I'd take a chance to see if anyone had posted this fun dance routine on yourtube.

I just love when Charles Durning "turns" into his 10 gallon hat.

thanks so much for putting this here so many could enjoy it !!!

  • It's ALL POLITICIANS including Obama!!!

  • "We seem to be having some acoustic problems in here"

    Tooooo funny!

  • this is obviously the inspiration for that other great song & dance act...GWBush...same BS...

  • rwifenrir - it's more than Bush. It's the way Washington is run for decades. That you want to turn it into partisan finger pointing is exactly what they are relying on. Keep us attacking each other so we don't see the big problem and hold them responsible.

  • This song is a classic "showstopper" in musical theater. Charles Durning is amazing - truly a national treasure. I will endure the whole movie just to see this 5 minutes. Thanks for posting it on YouTube.

  • Now Ms. Mona.... I don't know her, though I heard the name oh yeeeeess..

  • oh yesssssss!!!

  • Comment removed

  • That white man can dance!!!

  • So clever!!!

  • The song writer of this song did very well.

  • This was probably the best part of the whole movie! The rest was...well...a snoozer.

  • One of the greatest actors and one of the best people in this world. Thanks for all,Mr.Durning.

  • He is a ninja. :D

  • I bought a cowboy hat just to do this

  • loved this film, great great post thanks

  • GREAT SONG................

  • Durning is a MASTER actor...he should get an Oscar for his boby of work...that´s an actor who has always given great performances even when the movies he was on were not up to par.

  • Decorated war hero and patriot as well ...

  • Yeah, buddy.

    I knew that.

    Pretty cool, huh?

  • Reminds me of all those times that W. (the former Gubbnah of Texas) tried to beat around the bush when answering questions about tourture.

  • Had not seen this in many years. Seeing it now only two words come to mind -- Bill Clinton!! -- fits him to a "T"

  • The best part of the movie!

  • When we have a meeting with our boss we all look at each other and say did you get any of that? I hear him talking but he don't come in.

  • I still say it's my boss!

  • Classic. Thanks for posting.

  • i work at the texas capitol....and wish i could dance like this!!

  • it looks like the inside of your great statehouse... though i've never been to Austin.. Is it?

  • I don't think the mansion is the actual Governor's Mansion, but the scenes that followed were shot inside the State Capitol, although today it looks somewhat different because it has been remodeled since this movie was filmed.

  • Yeah, it does look a bit different, much more elegant on the inside nowadays. But it is indeed the Capitol Building here in Austin. Thank goodness they got rid of that awful blue color in the dome and added back in the gold trim to a lot of the moldings as well as the original front doors instead of the glass ones they have here. The Capitol is one of my favorite places in town to wander, inside and out.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again: Having been to both, our State Capitol Building in Austin is MUCH nicer than our National Capitol in Washington, D.C.

  • Charles Durning dancing this in boots is great!!

  • obamas press conferences arent what concerns me.its the fact that all his stimulus bills are basically starting us off on a communist journey.

  • Obama must have taken lessons from Charles Durning on sidestepping and avoiding real press conferences.

  • Dude shut the hell up. Obama just started okay? I bet even that stupid puppet McCain would have avoided press conferences

  • Unfortunately this job is not suited for on the job training. He said he was ready and he wasn't. Anymore mistakes and our country is in the toilet.

  • That's a direct quote from John McCain, at least the first part. If you want to criticize the president, do it with your own words. By the way, economists are saying the economy is on the up. Stop watching so much FOX NEWS.

  • Wrong person, Hillary Clinton said it during the debates. Get your facts right.

By the way, under the constitution I have the right to hold my politicians accountable and criticize their job performance. Try reading the constitution, its called Freedom of Speech.

Also, I have an MBA and was an economist. They are just making it all up as they go along. Today more than anything else they are testing those paper theories on our checkbooks, paychecks and our livelihoods.

  • Wow we can tell your a stupid monkey supporter. It's cause of that stupid monkey the country's already in the toilet. Funding a war just to show the world he could defeat an enemy his equally stupid daddy couldn't beat. And I mean Saddam Hussein.

  • Ok, so you have nothing but a high school degree right? "stupid monkey supporter????"

I didn't support any of our previous presidents. My picks haven't won in over 16 years. Try another tack.

  • Name calling is no another tack, and trying to silence someone you disagree with is also not sufficient or how this country was founded. Why not let me have my opinions and you have yours without resorting to sophomoric name calling.

  • I highly doubt a sophmore unless they were excelling in a science subject would know what a neanderthal is. Just shut up.

  • My sister is a certified and licensed psychologist and even she knows what sophomoric means. I and she know what Neanderthal means as well. Why not stop with some dignity, since you aren't using a dictionary apparently. I have said all I am going to say but I won't rudely ask you to shut up like you have done. I am sure if you speak to your clients in such a manner you aren't much help.

  • Such a similar character to Pappy O'Daniel. I reckon the Cohens based the casting on this!

  • uhhhh i love to dance a little sidestep xD *dance*

  • This song is so Obama on Leno last night!!!

Haven't seen a black man tap dance around that good since Gregory Hines died!!!

  • so true lmaoo!!!

  • R u trying to tell a joke...Eight years was a joke....

  • you two are morons!

  • So true!

  • I think they show this video as part of Management Training courses, and then instruct them to act like this. Leaves this engineer scratching his head in confusion.

  • Did anyone notice as he is coming out of the limo 1:54 he looks at the one reporter as he is flying by him and yells Hi Jerry! A lot of things going on the the video that you can miss. Great stuff

  • Charles During, a wonderful talent.

  • I love the expressions on the reporters faces when they're trying to figure out what he said! LOL! "Possible maybe".

  • 5*****stars - thanks for posting it!

This is great - heres a Governor who is having fun and really enjoys his job.........

  • Ha! I just watched again - I like where Charles makes the taller man step down to a lower step :D

  • I just love this, definitely a favorite!! How many fellows with a tummy can dance like that? :)

  • I asked my boss for a laptop and he did the sidestep right out of my office down the hall and into another workers office. I was thinking after he left. Is that a yes or a no? It's a possible maybe.

  • I'm 17 and listen to metal... but when no one's home I crank this lol This is one of my favourite movies

  • So you have a similar boss as well? We got the "Side Step" when we asked for a new phone system - our current one is circa 1988. We're getting a lot of mileage out of this video.

  • That also is my boss. He likes to dance the little sidestep. Oooooo I love to dance the little sidestep. Cut a little swathe and lead the people on. Is that a yes or a no? It's a possible maybe.

  • He's like my boss!

  • Durning's the best thing in this movie!!!!

  • I LOVE IT!!!

This is the greatest song and dance in the whole movie... Charles Durning is king.

  • my sister works at a whorehouse :)

  • Why Would you tell that to the world that your sister works at a whorehouse?

  • so you would have a question

  • ooohhh i love to dance a little side step!

LMAO. The thing he does with the hat, I burst out laughing everytime.

And, this song is sooo true to politicians. lol. So funny.

  • by the way. charles durning is an excellent hoofer.

  • is this gw bush or what

  • His character does seem like George W. It's so ironic. Ironic because we know this character was not based on Bush. This movie was made in 1982 before George W. OR even his father was elected.

  • Seems more like Palin to me... being as vague as possible and never truely answering the question..

  • Is there ANYONE OUT THERE who can put Palin's face on the Governor? This sounds JUST LIKE HER, lol. Mention the Flag, America, Prayer, and NEVER answer the question. It's one of my favorites in the movie, sad that we have it in real life :(

  • I KNOW RITE!!!!! My moms friend says that is her themesong!

  • This movie is based on a true story about a chicken ranch in Texas and how a reporter went out of his way because of what was happening. Anyways this is my favorite part of the whole movie,....so funny specially how he turns into his hat and the wobble in the limo. LOVE IT!!!

  • My 2nd favorite from one of my all time favorite movies. I LOVE the Governor!

  • This is so Obama.. say what cha want tell me what changes and what hopes? He never promised free health care... Wait 1 year and then see....

  • 100 Snazzes on the 100 point Snazz-o-Scale!

-Perfection! An awesome and hilarious song. A lot of fun to watch.

-I do believe Durning won an Academy Award for this. Or was he just nominated?

-And it's SO true. Politicians always answer questions without answering questions.

    -Like ... Sarah Palin! :P

  • Perfect song for the McCain Palin campaign.

Hey, Tina Fey- this would be a great bit on SNL.

  • Charles Durning is really a national treasure! (besides being a great character actor, patriotic man and D-Day Veteran). God Bless him & his family.

  • Hey! It's the state of Nevada's governor Jim Gibbons : )

  • If he dances like that I'd vote for him

  • Sarah Palin's themesong

  • This is my absolute favorite part of the entire musical. Now i need to go watch it again!

  • This is great.

  • Thanks PeacefulRetreat35 for sending me this little number.

He sure sings and dances better than McCain, otherwise they are surely the same.

  • what a wonderful dance number.

  • Charles Durning can dance! Awesome.

  • This song should be mandatory viewing for anyone who believes a politician LOL

  • Ah classic! Classic! 5/5

  • are you kidding me? any more proof needed that life repeats broadway? this is sarah palin completely. i'm for progress and the flag.

  • i love when he puts on his hat and doers his head turn to put it in place. hehe
