Just noticed something in the video. Notice the kw meter in the 450h? When it hits 250kw (which is about 339hp), it stays there throughout without dropping. Compare that with the 335i, rev meter naturally drops between shifts - meaning power loss. We all know hp is highest at redline (in this case 300hp for the 335i). This fact alone could account for the result that 450h reaches 260 much faster than 335i, even though the power to weight ratio is better for the 335i compared to the 450h.
Wat is so surprising about 450h winning the 335i over 0-260km/h drag race?? It's a given, regardless day or night, unless conditions were drastically different.
Now you have to make the same comparison, but with an empty battery on the lexus. Also, wie haven't seen the street, so maybe the BMW drive slightly uphill? Who knows ;) But, at 0-100, the BMW is faster...

@TheBMWexpert BMW doesn't win against the Lexus at all. GS450h has 40 more horsepower than the 335, but it weighs 500 pounds more. And the 550i will lose to the Lexus GS 450h 0-250km/h just like the 335 did. Lexus is simply faster.

german cars are only good during the warranty years, and even then you have to pay premium for simple things such as real leather. honestly, the only good thing german cars have over japanese counterparts is the handling/driving experience. everything else is either even, or inferior.

I have driven a few Lexus and they're nothing special. The steering feedback is nonexistent, the ride is way to cushy and the interiors look cheap. Hell, you're in Europe, right? You should know better what makes a real luxury car. Hint: Rebading a Toyota isn't luxury.
I'm not too clued up on the specs of both cars, but the hybrid has an electric motor that not only is used gently in town but assists in the acceleration right? Depending on how much torque the electric motor in the lexus is producing and how long it is assisting it will make a difference and is an advantage to the lexus as would be a turbo charger. The 335 is simply normally aspriated isn't it? If so, the comparison is unfair. Do it again with the electric motor switched off would be fairer.
@trident3b the 335i has twin turbos. It's also important to note that the BMW's N54 engine is "detuned". With a cheap and safe tune (around $300), it can reach up to 370 or more to the wheels (i think around 400hp crank) as well as similarly huge torque gains. There are even 335i's that have hit mid 12's with only a tune and even high 11's with tune, 100 octane gas, and drag tires. BTW i'm not a bmw fan boy. I've had both and I'm considering buying a GS450h or a 535i.
@djeasyice I see, thx. I didn't know that the 335 had two turbos, I should have checked first, easily done. Yes, I have an older 540i that was remapped and it certainly has bite and over here in Germany I have had years of legal very high speed fun. Of course an electric motor provides full torque all the time and turbos tend to lag though I assume the second turbo in the 335 is supposed to deal with that (?). A remapped 335 may just do the trick then. Thx 4 yr response.
@trident3b the 540i is a great car! I also have a 5. an e39 530i. you are correct, the second turbo deals with the lag. Both the gs450h and 335i have excellent engines. So I'm definitely at odds as to which one I want to buy. If I lived in Germany I would buy the 335i with out a doubt. 450h is a good daily driver (it's fast but I test drove it and it doesn't push you back in your seat like the 3) but the 335i seems like it would be incredibly fun to drive on no limit german roads.
@djeasyice indeed, & I have done over half a million kilometers in it (13 times round the equator) with over 70% motorway at well over 230Kph for hours on end & it pulls like day one. I had a 325i in the late80s which was the best car I ever had, it was 100% reliable & the feeling & roadholding was unbelievable. I'm getting older now and may have to look at something like a Merc 4matic e500(387PS version & remap it!). I'd like the latest shape RS6, but it's just too expensive. Thx 4 yr reponses.

It's a bigger car than a 335i, of course its going to consumer more fuel. 2010 5 Series with same engine gets 17/26 mpg, Lexus gets 22/25 mpg. 2011 5 series gets 20/29, but I'm guessing when the GS gets its refresh in the next year or so they'll be able to match that.

It uses 2 engines (3,5 v6 petrol and electric engine) to produce the same power as bmw produces from ONE smaller engine (3 liter inline6), and it consumes more fuel, and its much more expensive to buy, and its more expensive to make. @TheAeteros Hybrid technology cars are more efficient. GS 450h has a 3.5L V6 engine, but manages to reach 60MPH in 5.1-5.2 seconds. I am not surprised to see it goes so fast because it doesn't have a transmission to waste time for gear shifting.

@SoftRose4You I've NEVER seen an actual test of a 335i achieving a 5.4 second 0-60. In the real world you'll never get anything higher than 5 flat and it's common for people to get 4.6-4.7. I know because I actually own and drive one every day.

2-3 years ago bmw and merc were screaming- scew hybrids - look what happens now - both have released cars with electric motors, bmw is very shy about it though : calling it brake regeneration... They acknowledging what lexus did. You just cannot compete easily with the huge torque that the elecric motor provides. That's why GS hard to beat at higher speed
But the GS gained only at higher speeds, it was relatively even up 160kmh, where bmw showed a speed of 155kmh and gs 160 and then the gap started increasing.
I know the Lexus hybrids are pretty fast but the one in this video is running 0-100 kmh in 4.2 sec? How is that possible for that car? Lexus and most auto publications peg that car at around 5.5-6.0 sec. Something's fishy here.......

It even weighs 200 pounds more than the hybrid GS 450h. There are similar videos of the F10 550 acceleration on youtube, you can compare it to the GS 450h. I know it's hard for you BMW fanatics to accept defeat, but the truth is Lexus is faster. And the new GS that will go on sale in 6 months is better in every way.

I'm not too clued up on the specs of both cars, but the hybrid has an electric motor that not only is used gently in town but assists in the acceleration right? Depending on how much torque the electric motor in the lexus is producing and how long it is assisting it will make a difference and is an advantage to the lexus as would be a turbo charger. The 335 is simply normally aspriated isn't it? If so, the comparison is unfair. Do it again with the electric motor switched off would be fairer.

@trident3b the 335i has twin turbos. It's also important to note that the BMW's N54 engine is "detuned". With a cheap and safe tune (around $300), it can reach up to 370 or more to the wheels (i think around 400hp crank) as well as similarly huge torque gains. There are even 335i's that have hit mid 12's with only a tune and even high 11's with tune, 100 octane gas, and drag tires. BTW i'm not a bmw fan boy. I've had both and I'm considering buying a GS450h or a 535i.

@djeasyice I see, thx. I didn't know that the 335 had two turbos, I should have checked first, easily done. Yes, I have an older 540i that was remapped and it certainly has bite and over here in Germany I have had years of legal very high speed fun. Of course an electric motor provides full torque all the time and turbos tend to lag though I assume the second turbo in the 335 is supposed to deal with that (?). A remapped 335 may just do the trick then. Thx 4 yr response.

@trident3b the 540i is a great car! I also have a 5. an e39 530i. you are correct, the second turbo deals with the lag. Both the gs450h and 335i have excellent engines. So I'm definitely at odds as to which one I want to buy. If I lived in Germany I would buy the 335i with out a doubt. 450h is a good daily driver (it's fast but I test drove it and it doesn't push you back in your seat like the 3) but the 335i seems like it would be incredibly fun to drive on no limit german roads.

I had a 325i in the late80s which was the best car I ever had, it was 100% reliable & the feeling & roadholding was unbelievable. I'm getting older now and may have to look at something like a Merc 4matic e500(387PS version & remap it!). I'd like the latest shape RS6, but it's just too expensive. Thx 4 yr reponses.

Another fact is that 3-4 years ago bmw in media claimed the same things - nobody needs hybrids. I guess you know(?) they did release performance hybrids 5 and 7 series. Huge and heavy 7th gets to 60 in 4.7 sec b/c of that. The point is I dont think that Lexus got hurt by this video in any way, in fact it is other way around.

It's a bigger car than a 335i, of course its going to consumer more fuel. 2010 5 Series with same engine gets 17/26 mpg, Lexus gets 22/25 mpg. 2011 5 series gets 20/29, but I'm guessing when the GS gets its refresh in the next year or so they'll be able to match that.

It uses 2 engines (3,5 v6 petrol and electric engine) to produce the same power as bmw produces from ONE smaller engine (3 liter inline6), and it consumes more fuel, and its much more expensive to buy, and its more expensive to make. So, thats why i hate when people say lexus is better than bmw, because its simply not better in any single aspect. Not one Lexus model is better than equivalent BMW model.

@TheAeteros Hybrid technology cars are more efficient. GS 450h has a 3.5L V6 engine, but manages to reach 60MPH in 5.1-5.2 seconds. I am not surprised to see it goes so fast because it doesn't have a transmission to waste time for gear shifting.

lets see........comparing a $50k sports coupe with a top tier "Grand Sport" sedan with a V8. You are comparing 2 different cars. My dad owns a 2010 GS350, I own a 2007 BMW 328i, and my dads girlfriend owns a 2011 BMW 335xi. I drive all 3 a lot and I can tell you they are all great cars, but they have their own feels. I have to say though, the BMWs much better handling, breaks, driving dynamics. The lexus has reliability, quietness, smoothness.

@SoftRose4You I've NEVER seen an actual test of a 335i achieving a 5.4 second 0-60. In the real world you'll never get anything higher than 5 flat and it's common for people to get 4.6-4.7. I know because I actually own and drive one every day.

2-3 years ago bmw and merc were screaming- scew hybrids - look what happens now - both have released cars with electric motors, bmw is very shy about it though : calling it brake regeneration... They acknowledging what lexus did. You just cannot compete easily with the huge torque that the elecric motor provides. That's why GS hard to beat at higher speed

I know the Lexus hybrids are pretty fast but the one in this video is running 0-100 kmh in 4.2 sec? How is that possible for that car? Lexus and most auto publications peg that car at around 5.5-6.0 sec. Something's fishy here.......

@4MATICbenz Well, 335 and GS got to 60 practically @ the same time in this video. Fishy is the video that doesnt shake even a bit... FYI GS450h is rated 5.2 by lexus. End result is very much depends on the battery charge.
