Poor Wolsey, just a man trying to do his job and some woman comes along and screws it up, lol. I know he made mistakes and he wasn't perfect, but I love the guy!
Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell were the best two servants he had when it caem to running things for him and making things run smoothly. I do nto understand why they were so determined to pull him down.
Great movie! It also shows how medical science was in its prehistoric stage. After all the bloodshed from Monarchs who blamed the woman for them not bearing sons, which is now well known that it is the Male who determines the sex of a child. Henry VIII constantly blamed his queens for the lack of a male heir when he was the one who was responsible for fathering daughters.. Thanks for posting this movie!
It is unlikely that Mary Boleyn had a son by Henry, as he had set her aside long before she became pregnant, and in fact, was already pursuing Anne. I often wonder what would have happened if the Duke of Richmond (Henry's illegitimate son by Bessie Blount) had survived Henry, and Henry never had a legitimate son. (Richmond died at 17, just a few weeks after Anne was executed). Would he have been given precedence over Mary and Elizabeth, who were restored to the succession line because of Edward?
@spartacus3ful . As Edward was a "bastard". I think if he lived there would of been war between him and Edward, (like the duke of Monmouth Charles 2nd illegitimate son ) and he may of came before Mary and Elizabeth as Fitzroy had the advantage of being male. Mary and Elizabeth were restored to the succession due to Henry v111 act of succession he made before he died. Edward his heir then his oldest and youngest daughters. He never "legitimized" Mary or Elizabeth.
@spartacus3ful Also Henrys son to Mary boleyn was never acknowledged like Fitzroy was. There was many reasons for this, mainly the scandal it would of caused in close conjugal rights between henry / Anne / Mary. Even though henry sought a way round it at the time to marry Anne. He used it against her for divorce. And he did not want to many rivals for the throne of his blood especially against a legitimated heir he intended to have. Elizabeth was close to her cousin - The Earl of Hunsdon
Anne's arrogance, malice, and jealousy was her undoing. Everyone talks about how she stood up to Henry and paints her as a martyr but I am not impressed with her accomplishments. Of course she was innocent of the trumped up charges against her but if she had played her hand better she may have survived, but in the end I guess she got what she wanted, as did Catherine. they both wanted their daughters to be queen but fortune and good counsel was on Elizabeth's side.
Very true. I find it ironic that feminist scholars look to her as a heroine when she really just used her looks and cunning to get ahead. It is obvious that Anne emerges as a heroine because she was anti-Catholic, and of course, most scholars are themselves anti-Catholic, especially in Britain. Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr were far more clever in that they used diplomacy to placate Henry, and thus survived him.
@meganmlll In the scene where the two people in the masks interrupt Katherine in the middle of her prayers at 13:19 . The woman in the mask who slowly backs up is Elizabeth Taylor. :)
I wonder why she would make such an obscure appearance, particularly at the height of her own career. Of course, she was known for such eccentricities, as when she was paid a cool $1 million for uttering one word as the voice of the baby in The Simpsons.
@spartacus3ful Why not? It certainly would be ironic. People do these kinds of things for fun (and a little moola)) not because she/he needs billing. And the very fact that she is not billed and people recognized her shows her star power. Stars do it a lot.
i find it interesting that anyone would dislike Anne for openly admitting she liked power. men like power, men have power, but once it's a woman who wants power, she becomes 'deceitful' and 'greedy'. anne wanted power? good for her, and she got it the only way that was available for women in those times: sex and marriage. and i'd like to point to out that you don't have to dislike Catherine to like Anne. I admire them both for different reasons, though I like Anne more.
I am Greek, so I am biased toward two persons: the actress Irene Papas (Greek) and Queen Catherine of Aragon (from Spain, a fellow Mediterranean country). Catherine was a kind and virtuous woman, and while Anne certainly did not deserve execution, she was too much of a vixen for people to like. (And before all the women get upset, I am a male who has no respect for conniving and corrupt men, either).
@telamon2011 I really like your comment. So refreshingly different. I agree Anne was a "vixen" and women / people find it hard to like one such as Anne. Catherine was indeed virtuous and pious. Both very separate characters. I like both Catherine of Aragon and Anne for totally different reasons. Both were inspirational women.
I am an equal opportunity critic. I am a male who dislikes men who do the same thing: stepping on toes ruthlessly to get ahead. Anne called herself a religious reformer, yet she defied so many rules that Christ taught. Not that none of us are non-sinners, but she clearly went out of her way, such as calling for the executions of John Fisher and Thomas More, the torture and murder of monks who cared for the poor, and even demanding the deaths of Catherine and Mary.
I understand that this is why she was no saint or victim or angel. She encouraged him in his murderous tendencies as long as it benefited her, but when she taught him he could rule on his own and end up not needing anyone to keep him in check, she suddenly dislikes it when he ends up turning on her? It's no wonder she didn't have any more babies because all of them drowned in the blood she shed.
Catherine actually had a far better education than Anne. Anne only knew French as a foreign language while Catherine knew several. Anne really did not understand philosophy or theology at all, and only demanded that the "old order" be ousted so as to serve her interests. As for their daughters, Elizabeth killed far more people than Mary, left England bankrupt, lost most of the naval battles with Spain (Armada aside) and repealed the laws designed to help the poor that were enacted under Mary.
catherine of aragon is always described as the ugly, narrow-minded catholic who exists only as a sort of "dark age" before the true "rennaisance" queen, anne. little is said of her admiration for henry and the fact that henry betrayed her. it is true that anne gave birth to queen elizabeth the first, and catherine for "bloody mary" but why this reverse judgement of a poor betrayed woman who could'nt foresee the future? so much for accurate interpretation!
I must say, when Anne did refuse the king I loved her, but then, when she said, I have pretty cloths, and Power, that is when she lost my respect, she was very greedy, but smart in a way, she and henry loved power, and power and pride was her and henry's undoing!!!, I felt so sad for Cathrine, but it is intresting, he was 37 years old when he met Anne, and they had an affiair for 6 years I belive, so he was 42 and getting big LOL, so 37 I believe was not a handsome man!! LOL.
I want to fill you up, night after night. I want to fill you up with sons.
