I think people should read the book before the movie, even though the movie was made before book. So I hope these answer some of y'alls questions:

@powergirl07 Treves wanted a name in the medical department, so displaying The Elephant man sort of made Treves have a name in the game.

@copnite12342 Bytes was John's "Owner" and Treves wanted to examine John and study him, so Treves "hired" John. Bytes is a drunk so he just started to beat John when he came back.

Brilliant film. It surprised me at first, When people think "David Lynch" the first thing that comes to their mind is a Director that uses many different techniques involving a Dark Ambient atmosphere with very little dialogue that hardly ever makes sense. That's not really the case here. The fact that he can turn any type of film using only his pure-dark imagination is something that will always inspire me. Elephant man is one of those films that doesn't involve that formula, yet it's so eerie!

He thinks the Doctor is going to slice him up or poke and prod him etc. Guy has been used like a napkin his entire life and this is just another person that wants to use him. But this Doctor is HUMAN, he does want to study him, but his Humanity tells him that the way he has been treated is one million times worse then his physical appearence.

This Doctor was a great man.

The actual reason there was emphasis put on his genitals being intact was this: in The Victorian era there were a lot of ideas floating about (Darwinism, Eugenics etc) that only the fittest survive, or can pass on their genes etc....the fact The Elephant mans genitals were perfect, & cud procreate flew in the face of alot of these theories which some of Treves peers were promulagating at the time...Treves took issue with some of the extreme eugenics theories

not really, it was infront of a medically trained and mature audiance. They showed the deformities to identify what they were, tumor ect to get a better spectrum on how to help him
