After 5 years of 'Waltons' medriocrity, Richard Thomas was finally (in 1979) given a part worthy of his acting talents. A great performance in a greatly underrared film I think. Ok, he plays Paul Baumer as uber John-Boy but that's quite in character. He looks pretty good here too but why oh why does he feel the need to flaunt that huge mole on his left cheek?
@PierreAntoine1000 As far as we know, Richard T. never regarded his distinctive facial birthmark/mole as anything but a positive. In this film he made it very much a part of how he chose to look as Paul Baumer.
When we watched this in History everyone made fun of it and said it was stupid. I actually like this movie and found it very interesting to show Germany's point of view in World War 1. To tell you the truth I think the Central Powers where in the right. The war started when Franz Ferdinand of Austria (allies of Germany) was assasinated by a terrorist... Hmmm. So that means in WW1 we sided with terrorists... Yeah, pretty sure the HIstory books didnt mention that...
@Tharagus When the Germans invaded Belgium they adopted an official policy of terror. They burned down villages and shot civilians by the thousands in an effort to subdue the Belgians. The simple invasion of Belgium (who was neutral) brought the Brits into the war. The policy of terror turned world public opinion against germany and precluded a series of negative actions that brought the US against the Germans. Guess they didn't put that part in what history book you read
@jackgraham96 Belgium is an artificially created nation, nor the holland nor the french part don't want their forced artificial union. Less then 10% of the british war-propaganda was true about germans in belgium. However the British history tuition spokes about ancient grrece gypt and roma, and after fall of roma story started the history of Britian. Therefore ww1 British average mass people believed every fantastic negative stories about the "less known" german people. :))))))
@jackgraham96 Most of if not all of the news which made it to America regarding the war came from Britain so this should also be taken in to consideration. As should the fact that the US had lent millions to allies which would have been another reason for them to enter on their side.Of course not that the US did much in WWI anyway as the war was basically over by the time they entered.
@Tharagus Gavrilo Princip was not a terrorist but a Servian Nationalist and his assasination of Ferdinand of Austria was hardly an attack on a whole nation so to say that the allies were terrorists would be not be true under any stretch of the word.
@KingsLee8 No, the loud explosion was a bomb going off in the distance and he fell over into the mud because he heard it and didn't want to risk being spotted by the enemy. He wrinkled up the paper because after the many years he had been in the war he felt so disconnected that he felt no feelings for intimate things like art. The paper falling in the mud is symbolism for his youth getting destroyed. Duh
@SvNNL He was decidedly NOT alone in the trench. There was a lull in the fighting & having done his rounds checking the morale and welfare of his exhausted young recruits, he sought some peace and solace at the unoccupied end of the trench. His fatal mistake was to momentarily lose concentration & become exposed to a sniper's bullet.
@PierreAntoine1000 In this, his first post-Waltons film, Richard chose to let his large & distinctive face mole be seen undisguised by any 'softening' make-up. It became very much a feature of how he wanted to look as Paul Baumer. I have no problem with it.
@TheJomogogo we had a teacher who smoked in class in the early/mid 70s he`d been a sgt-major in the war .he still had all the `classic `sgt.m expessions `yew orrible shower` etc he taught history and no matter what period of history he was teaching it always came back to WW2.he would refer to scots as `haggis bashers` and the french as `frogs`very un-pc
In reality the war wasn't as romantically poignant as this. In Ernst Junger's novel 'Storm of Steel' he remarks how on a quiet section of the front he was so tired, after being on guard duty all night, that he shot at some wood pigeons because they were getting on his nerves.
@moleman9000 Evidently this would get you killed on some sections of the front, but he also states that at times it got soo quiet that sentries from both sides who were close to each other sometimes threw notes and sangs songs to each other.
Richard Thomas was well known throughout the 70's, along with his trademark mole. To hide it for this movie would have been too conspicuous to movie goers at the time.
I dont understand what happened, I dont remember watching that, I remember he goes to the hospital then home, Then i stopped watching it, does he go back or somthing?
@phirefox375 Yes, he couldn't bare to stay away from his comrades. Civilian life was just too alien. No one understood the war or the men coming home from it.
watching this in class think its good so far. i just think the way the soldiers die is sooo funny haha i mean when there falling to the ground n things like they make it dramatic haha
what i hate of remake is when they alter sequences which need no further enhancement! like they did to the first ghost on the shell movie!, remastering cannot put more than whats there so remakes are worth for increasing battle & dramatic sequences! if the classic scenes are not destroyed!, freddy kruger movies is good cause of his homour! (jason vs freddy kruger <--- kick ass) but now they killed it!▐▐▐
@Gymroids Wow, I can't believe this classic WW1 film was made for T.V. and never had a theatrical release, amazing. I've read that they're making a re-make as well.
So terrible when Kat goes, Ive only read the book but the movie looks very good, I would prefer if it was in german with english subtitles however, It would feel more authentic, but still, Looks very good.

@Gymroids There are some other books, also published by german soldiers just after the war. They did not make it on the intl. market, but some of them are also from a horrifieing intensity. After 1933 most of them were prohibited or banned. But even some of the gloryfing literature written by german veterans cant hide the unbelievable horror when we read them today (eg testimonials from "Landmarck"-students, college-books of fallen classes containing down how and where the pupil fell, etc)
