  • I can't stand it when people say that his voice has matured since this competition. He sounds like a baritone from the past and he was rewarded properly by winning this competition. Now, he has lost the old-world sound and has opted to sing with force, which has robbed him of his former beauty. The voice today is magnificent, but imagine what it would be if he had remained on a path that praised this healthy voice production vs force. It would be a triumph.

  • The quality of his voice here is incredible!

  • What a voice ... srsly, it's not really fair that he gets all the beauty for his voice he could possibly ask for ... Just love it, although it is not a typical "Verdi", but who likes to stick to outdated opinions? Today he sounds more like a Verdian, although I sometimes wish he would return to the voice he displays so beautifully here. Anyway, he is my favourite (living) singer.

  • Now this is a gorgeous baritone'in top of his form, able to sing as dramatic as lyric roles perfectly( see his new records- for example, arias and duets wiht R.Fleming in S.-Petersburg and Pushkin' romances).

  • Now his voice is much fuller, deeper, technically equipped with pinpoint frasing and incomparable breathcontrol. Just compare his old and new recordings(romances, arias(Verdi espessially, but not just ), and it'll be obvious to you that the newer is mush superior.

Take his artistic growth and superb vocal technique. lyrical is not better than Verdian- just a different genre.

  • I couldn't agree more with your last comment, "Lyrical is not better than Verdian," but you have to agree that there is more natural color in his voice at this point in his life. Also, singing seems much easier for him here than today. Today, he has adopted a pushed onset and a continuous strained, muffled sound in his voice especially in his upper tessitura. As I've said on other videos, he is one of the best in the world today, but one hopes he will return to a healthier technique.
