Not Quite! Both the tune of "God Save the Queen" and "My Country tins of Thee" are based on a Germanic Patriotic song. The song "My country tis of thee" was originally called "America" and the man who wrote the lyrics was a Baptist minister named Samuel Smith, who had never heard the song "God Save the Queen"
@bookaddict2000 The german patriotic song your thinking of, was based off God Saved the King/Queen. Not the other war around. God Save the King/Queen was the original song with this melody.
I wish you British people will stop complaining about how usa stole it. I mean our orgins come from mostly Britain because we were mostly british colonies before yall neglected us then tried to tax us to a point where we could not feed our families. USA technically won the war because Britain gave up, and the last time i checked...the winner in war can do whatever we want. At the end of the day Britain and the USA are sister countries now...so lets just celebrate each other
America gained its independance from British rule, which ended taxation without representation in parliment and no more monarchy! God is our only Sovereign and King and He is where our liberty comes from not from the queen (or king) of England! From every mountain side let freedom ring!!
@rstawarz111 I forgot about that comment. It is okay, I just know alot of people who dislike me and say I am not patriotic for being an atheist, and I don't like it. I probably love my country more then most people love their god! I probably overreacted by saying that. But I am still glad you fought for this great country! And for that, I owe you my life! Thank you for your service.
@wiggy475 we thought it would be better to use a great tune to sing about our land and people rather than whoever is lucky enough to be born to someone who was also lucky enough (and so on) to a monarch
@wiggy475 no, the tue was so great that we used the tune but we shall never use it as our anthem beacause it would be stealing from you so dont freak out ok??
@wiggy475 no the tune was so great the we used it but it shall never become usa's anthem because it would be stealing from you so dont freak out dude!
@rstawarz111 It is people like who, people who think that only god-fearing people are righteous, is what caused 9-11. You should be ashamed of your comment.
@jdmifsud14 "God Save the Queen" and "My Country, TIs of thee" sound the same - because they have the same basic tune (if modified just a little)! There are only 3 verses for the british/commonwealth national anthem - but several more verses exist for the american song!
@StevenTylersAngel the music is the tune of the british anthem but with words of america that is why it cant be our anthem it would be stealing fro british
Marines, home of the brave, and home of the tough, Semper Fi "Always faithful" and thats not a bluff!!. It is THE BRITISH NATIONAL ANTHEM ... This was our plagiarized version until we got the Star Spangled Banner ...
vbgecko 6 months ago
@vbgecko NO! The lyrics are American original! They were written by American Samuel Francis Smith in 1831.

we should make this a coanthem and have it played only during games against the UK

Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.
God Bless America!
