Absolutely incredible penalty shoot out from Argentina point of view. With those missed spot kicks they dug a hole for themselves, but still managed to get through. They were great survivors in this tournament.
For me very suprise thing is that, that a lot of players of this argentinian team (half squad) includes Serrizuela, Dezotti, Simon, Lorenzo, Burruchaga, Calderon, Olarticoechea, Giusti (he retired from international football, i know that) or Monzon never played for Argentina after this World Cup. This is interested for me, because they are good players during the tournament.
@KubaKebab: Simon was incredible in Italy 1990. But all those players you mentioned were "Bilardo's guys", and some of them were already in their thirties. Everyone in Argentina wanted completely different national team... an offensive minded team. Basile's teams were all attack.
I look, that Simon played very solid against Yugoslavia in this game (only one bad moment-against Stojkovic, who dribbled him im penalty area and passed to Savicevic) and this is very suprisingly, that he played only 13 MATCHES for argentinian national team.
Very suprisingly Is for me absence of RAMÓN DIAZ in this world cup, too. I heard, that he has conflict with coach Bilardo. That is right? He played in 1990 for Inter and scored a lot of goals in Serie A ...
@detonator2112. Totally agree about Burruchaga, and I acknowledge Maradona's injury problems and the fouls he had to live with, but still for me, he was a major disappointment throughout the tournament. In the final against West Germany f.exc. I virtually didn't see him at all. Effectively marked out by Buchwald (without the nastyness that we saw against the little wizard earlier in the tournament.). As for the style of play. it was awful - worse than Greece has ever been.
strangest football experience ever: Argentina came to Italy 90 with virtually the same team that awed the world i 1986. Argentina 1990 were SUPERSTARS - and they played shite from start to end. Maradona was mediocre throughout the tournament, except the semifinals against Italy in which he was great and one incredible throughpass to Caniggia against Brazil. Apart from that he did nothing. Goycochea won the silver for them.
@HelgeKS: Maradona played lower in the midfield as a playmaker (and not the second striker role that he had in 1986) and made probably 100 perfect passes in the tournament. I think he played very well in Italy 1990, considering he had knee and ankle injuries. He was also the most fouled player of the tournament by a ridiculous margin. This was very defensive minded team with lots of injuries. Biggest disappointment in 1990 was Burruchaga's performance, imho.
In Ecuador, almoist everybody was with Brazil, except for me who was with Argentina. Very solid defenders appeared Simon, Serrizuela y el Moncho Monzon. Of course Goyco was superb at penalties.
l'argentina fece letteralmente skifo!!! in quel mondiale vinse solo 2 gare e poi il resto una merda.maradona ando una merda grz brheme per quel rigore segnato in finale!!
I like very much Italia'90 and argentinian team but i must say, that they are play not fair :P I see all matches of Argentina this tournament and for me Ricardo Giusti is pracitaclly only player with fair class (so i can say)
Even though, i love argentinian team and Caniggia is my favourite player since loong time. For me he was the best argentinian player this tournament, much better than Maradona. Goycochea, Burruchaga and Olarticoechea were good too.
Oh, and the match against Italy felt like child's play compared to this one! The team had already won a place in the semi-finals which was an incredible victory in and of itself. When the penalties against Italy happened, I already pretty much knew how that would end up. Italy was under enormous pressure at that point! The Argentines clearly had the upper hand at that point :)
The only star was Maradona? Well, maybe but I think plenty of people also learned who Claudio Caniggia and Sergio Goycochea was during this tournament, heheh... it was because of these two that I supported this Arg-team.
Anyway, it's always a thrill to find other people who were on their side! :D Back then I literally thought that I must be practically the only one in entire Europe who was happy for their success... The internet has made me realize that I really wasn't, heh.
Yes, Goyco and Caniggia were stars in this tournament... but before world cup very few people had heard of them. Another unsung hero of this team was Juan Simon who was absolutely superb sweeper throughout the whole competition. Julio Olarticoechea was awesome, rugged leftback as well. This was very, very solid team defensively (although the 1st half against Brazil was really awful LOL).
Oh, how I remember... After Troglio's missed penalty I went to my room totally mortified and spontaneously sank on my knees, with my eyes closed, to pray to God. "Please, PLEASE let them win..."
I then heard my brother, who was against Argentina like pretty much everybody during this WC, shout "NOOOO" and instantly knew that Yugoslavia had blundered their penalty, as well.
When Goyco saved that last penalty I again went down on my knees, right in front of the TV, and shed tears of joy.
I hear you. The Italy match was even bigger bang. :)
It was interesting how successful Argentina was with this defensive minded counter attacking football. The only star was Maradona. Now they have lots of big stars but they're not warriors... just pretty boys and prima donnas. Everyone hated the 1990 team but I loved it. They were tough as nails.
Yeah, I have to agree, the Team of 1990 did not play beautiful football, but they were a determind bunch, the defence was was solid and they did not lie down. Nowadays they are like a lot of national teams, too many big names playing for big clubs and for some reason they feel that this gives them the right to play for their national team. To all Argentine footie fans, this is not a snipe, because England have gone through this as well. Thanks for 1990 Argentina!!
Argentina had a superstar team in 1994 (Maradona, Redondo, Batistuta, Ruggeri, Caniggia, Balbo, etc. etc.)... they had a superstar team in 1998 and 2002... and delivered nothing. This team had no stars and played defensive, counterattacking football. Just think about last World Cup's finalists... France and Italy... very similar teams. Visually stunning teams (like Brazil 1982 and Argentina 2006) have rarely been successful in the World Cup in the past decades. Unfortunately.
But had Maradona played the whole of 94 i belive that they wud'v gone the distance.Remember the 2 matches he played ARG. won but the 2 he didn't ... So this just goes to show how influential he was on the pitch. I genuinely believe there's still 1 more world cup in him.
I know how you felt. In Ecuador, all my friends and family favored anybody against Argentina, but I always rooted for them specially against Brazil. So, I was very happy for Argentina and Sergio who became a symbol of penalty stopper mastery. Go Argentina.
They sould have had a few Kosovar Albanians in the team, they know ho to win.
