  • She is fabulous!

  • i think it crosses the line of merely being "influenced" . Here licks and her band even sound like prine's musicians (jake & jason). i am not sure what song it was but for a minute i thought i was listening to Sam Stone, but it turned out to be one of her "originals".

  • She seems to be a very bad impression of John Prine.

  • @drbongo

She loves Prine's work, as do many of her fans. She isn't trying to copy him, but most musicians have influences, Dylan had Guthrie, Elvis the whole genre of black r&b.

  • It is a very black, dark song, but the audience kinda laughs as I do at its wry, ironic humour. Addiction issues can be crippling, and it's so easy not to even talk about them, just accept it all as part of our culture. Mary doesn't proselytise, she reflects back to us about ourselves stuff we might not be ready to see yet.

The accompanist's work is superb. Anyone who says Americans can't do irony should have a gander at this, brilliant.

  • Tater can imagine her with Bill Frisell on guitar too.

  • Feller probably laughed because the lyric is humorous. Not humorous as in clown antics funny but humorous as in wise and wry. And that it is.

  • Ironic. Heartbreaking. Very sad.

Richly talented artist, who is brave and wise enough to share her experiences (and which resonate with many of us).

  • bead on over to Country Standard Time and check out their review of Mary's latest album entitled "The Foundling"

    see you there!

  • Damn idiot laughs after the first chorus. They hear humor in their blown out hot pop country brains that absolutely will not let them understand the seriousness or depth of the song. What a bunch of idiots laughing after the bridge. At least they knew to applaud.

  • I have the original recording Mary did on this. This is one of the best songs. I love her music , but these videos don't do her justice. She is one of the best recording artists I have heard in years. Too much background noise on these videos. Her recordings are the real deal. Try them.

  • some whiskey on the side, this is a great song

  • How the hell can someone be so oblivious as to laugh during this song? This isn't Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, or Jimmy Buffett. She is not celebrating her drinking. Fucking pop country fans...

  • You are so right.. assholes that don't get it should really not drink and just stay home. Mary is very gracious with these bung holes .I probably would have said something via Ryan Adams.

  • @goldfalcon You are right

  • My sister, who is sadly very ill. loved this woman. She wanted me to listen to her so badly, I listened a bit and then told her (my sister) she's too country. But I thought I would check her out again because me sister loves her soo much.

  • Great song. Great performance ... I'm really impressed with how she pulls this off as a serious, sad, introspective piece. Garth Brooks or some rowdy country artist would make a raunchy comedy piece out of it, but this is soulful and touching. I hope it's not about her own experience.

This video is not that great ... misses half of the first line, audible laughing on it.

  • Talk about a brutally realistic song

  • Mmmm, the voice.

  • Seriously, run, don't walk to see her live. Songwriter, storyteller, singer, and stage presence extraordinaire.

  • I love this song so much!! The first time I heard it was on Bob Dylan theme time radio hour....she is amazing!! I am so pleased to see her sing it live!!!!

  • Super!

  • super! We Just discovered her too where was she ?

  • I don't need another lover hangin round tryin a make me change.

  • Mary is incredible. I had the privilege of hearing her for the first time when a friend of hers brought her to Austin to jam with some of us many years ago. I wish her much success.

  • never heard her before, man i cant beleive shes not bigger, when is she coming to michigan, i'll be there

  • man ilove this song reminds me of my own drunkeness

  • She's playing London in May 2008 as support to Richard Thompson. I can scarcely imagine a double bill that I could look forward to more.

  • The new Janis Joplin

  • I saw mary live Fantastic do you know she was hopeless Drunk but cleaned up dried out and was surprised to descover she was creative

  • Yes!MARY 1 of the best artist!

    GREAT song!!!

Is there another live cd other than the "1998-2002 live on stage" sold à the end of Mary's show?

  • I'm an Englshman. Heard this tonight round a friend's house....wow....great song

  • I discovered her today hallelujah!

  • I attended a show on this tour, and knew how brilliant Mary was, having seen her a couple of times before. What I wasn't prepared for was the sometimes staggering beauty of Thomm Jutz' guitar work. He played things that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck, especially when he played the electric. You get a small taste of it here. It is what I will remember most about that night.

  • agreed they really complement each other a superbly well - thomm has a nice cd out as well - sold at the shows

  • One of the greatest talents alive today.

  • beautyful

  • Great singer and song writer

  • One of her best, in my opinion, second only to Mercy Now. She is such a rare talent! Not only is she a soulful songtress, she is a gifted Americana poet. Thank you for posting.
