  • I love Demian Maia!!

  • demian maia = legend

  • Willing to bet all the assholes poking fun at his English would never dare say anything to him to his face. I have a feeling you'd wind up on the ground, and choked out pretty quick. He says look alot, and you're choked out cold, who is the loser then?

  • @crx122 he wouldnt do that because you make fun of him hes a nicer guy he would just laugh at u

  • Very clear directions. Thank you very much.

  • his english is better than mine and its my first language lol

  • lol americans are so stupid, english is a second or third language for most people on the planet

  • Comment removed

  • including Americans because they can't speak english properly

  • @aries6776 Thats because America has more African-Americans and Mexicans than any other race, Im not being racist either .

  • @parks2000 no I'm talking about white Americans. Don't worry it was just a joke about your bastardization of the English language

  • @imanuel2012 - Nice blanket statement calling "all Americans stupid". Truly displays your own level of intellect...or lack thereof. Perhaps you should get out more. Great video though; I like the succinct fashion in which it was demonstrated.

  • i hate being in side control. Its probably the hardest position to escape in BJJ.

  • @UGApplehead

dude it's easy. hit me up I'm out here in lawrenceville. The key is to know multiple escapes. There's always an opening, and patience is always key.

  • @UGApplehead agreed....i can't stand side control.....because it leads to knee on belly.....ughhhh

  • @UGApplehead i thought i was alone on this

  • Saulo Ribiero's book JJ Universtity is a great companion to Demians stuff. Both Saulo and Demian have many of the same philosophies concerning defense and escapes using body mechanics as opposed to pushing and opening the elbows.

  • I have no problem at all understanding his speaking. He gave a very great explanation. Respect !!

  • When rolling in class,I get so frastraited trying escape the side,I just let the oponent get the mount..It's much easyer escaping the mount for me...

  • Gotta love Demian Maia... IMO the best Jiu Jitsu in all of MMA.

  • That was just great...except were all still in side control Mr Maia...

  • @clearlynotstefan thats why its probably free, the rest u have to buy the dvd I would think

  • That was very helpful.

I thought he was easy to understand, some of you must be dumb as shit.....really.

  • Side mount vs full mount...side mount wins!

  • WorldMartialArts m.sn in profile

  • shit his english's pretty good though. Why the fuck's ppl talking shit about it.

i want him as my coach LOL

  • He never showed an escape at all during that video?

  • @GitB1 at 4:27 when he pushes his head to the side and lifts his hips the opponents weight is no longer on him so all you would have to do is keep turning idk why he didnt lol

  • @GitB1 That's what i kept waiting to actually see, I never actually saw the escape.

  • @GitB1 its just a clip from the dvd

  • Maia has a cool voice.

  • you've gotta love this guy. so what if he cant throw in all the filler words. that's all they are.. words that fill in. he gets the important ones in there. better than waste his breath.

  • if he isnt fast enough to go to the mount

  • He does an amazing job explaining very clearly in English, more clearly than most 'fluent' speaking people would be able to explain.

  • @geezuphosdown12

    so true.

  • BJJ legend.

  • Demian Maia's humility and mad skills on the mats, besides doing a hard degree in journalism (not as easy as you might think, you actually have to have an idea of how to communicate) are no reason to knock his English skills. I can understand him just fine and any serious BJJ practitioner should give this Professor the respect he deserves.

  • @Talton77 I think some should realize that most people in the world (as me) weren't educated on english since early age.

  • Maia btw has a college degree in Journalism at one of the hardest schools of journalism in brazil. Im brazilian and i know what im saying. so besides speaking english as a 2nd language, i bet he outfights and outsmarts any american that makes fun of his english...

    vamo demian!!

  • @timmygentil I totally agrizle

  • So the guy helps other people with these videos...and yet people make fun of his "bad English" ...gosh some ppl have no respect and decency

  • Anyone commenting on Demian's "bad English" it is his second language and actually he speaks better English than most Brazilians in MMA... Anderson Silva hardly speaks any. At least Demian tries and you know what he's saying. Demian is the man. Humble respectful guy with a serious BJJ game and recently we've seen that his striking and takedowns are improving too... true mixed martial artist!

  • @threeplusnine Seriously, Steven Seagal has to speak portugese when he's training anderson silva, he doesn't even know basic words related to mma in english. Muchless able to speak it like demian.

  • Doing both is cool but if you learn one just apply your strengths in the art you learned and destroy your opponent.dont try to box if you cant, find a gym with maybe kickboxing and bjj and you're good.

  • Maia is the man,he's helping me alot with my bjj.i saw his last fight and i was just observing his movents, hes great.

  • What should i do?

    Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Muay Thai?

    Or both?

  • @julianfigielguitar If you have the time and the money, do both. After a while, you`ll be safe both standing up or on the ground. If you wanna be even more complete as a fighter, add judo or wrestling to make sure you can get the fight to the ground if you need to.

If you need to pick one:

If you want self defense against most day to day situations and the possibility to beat a much stronger guy, take bjj

If you may need to fight multiple oponents, I`d go with Muay Thai.

    Both great arts.

  • @julianfigielguitar Well the simplest and most obvious answer to that would be both. BUT, i would recommend starting off with jiu jitsu, as a lot of schools incorporate muay thai in with their cirriculum, at least in my experience they have. I would get a good solid background in jiu jitsu and then branch out from there. Jiu jitsu is legit man, i'm extremely glad i started training jiu jitsu and wouldn't change it for anything. Hope this helps out your decision.

  • @julianfigielguitar both not, go for wrestling.

  • @julianfigielguitar well there are already 2 good answers. but ill just add that i agree with starting bjj. everybody wants to look flashy with punches and kicks but when it comes down to it most real fights hit the ground. it is much safer to start with a ground game and move forward in my opinion. i went from bjj to bjj and a couple boxing classes to bjj and a full mma classes. its best to learn everything you can, definitely if you want to be a fighter

  • It´s about BJJ, not english. Maybe they should learn a second language and then criticize. Idiots. Don´t like it? don´t watch.

  • Hey a Tony, pass a me the pepperoni........just kidding. Great video

  • this dude has a vert porno looking gi. chika wa wa

  • I would love to meet Maia and roll with him or should I say, get my ass kicked!!!

  • Thank you Demian Maia for this.

  • so do these principals still apply to mma or is this purely jiu jitsu or is it give n take a lil bit

  • @inkprints946

the techniques will work in either mma or bjj.

  • his english isnt bad i can uderstand him

  • People who make fun of different accents usually don't know any other language but English.

  • I hate trying to escape side.

  • @Mercer667 more of a reason to train in that position

  • demian maia has the best jiu jitsu in the world he even dominated frank mir at jiu jitsu and frank mir said he only thought he was good til he rolled with maia

  • @IVIADDOG1690 Roger Gracie is better, but Demian is awesome, no doubt about it.

  • man I like that white Gi!

  • he teaches step after step and his english is also okay to understand.

he points out what things are important for and what kind of mistakes people tend to make.

  • Wow, I'm happy I found all these videos, they're all very informative.

  • brazillians have the cutest accents

  • 1. Mute Youtube

    2. Click here: 3:54

  • this is good stuff, u can actually learn from his videos.

  • Escaping side control is much harder than escaping the mount.

  • agreed, when someone mounts its much easier to do a hip escape into the half guard.

  • yea some people have good fucking mounts though when theyre knees are in ur armpits it sucks.

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE Don't you just bridge and bring your knee in to escape side control.

  • @MrPolskaDuma, I wish it was that easy.

Try it against a good wrestler, side control is very tough to get out.

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE I must agree. Especially when your oppenent that is mounting you is bigger than you.

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE only to an average person holding a mount is just not over extending

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE not if im on the mount lol

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE

not true when someone knows how to hold the mount and counter bridge elbow escapes and understand how to control your elbows and head and hips it can leave you help less. Side mount is hard to hold when the guy can bridge hard and roll to his knees

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE Yeah man. I prefer roll to the side for giving my enemy the back. I can easier escape when someone has my buck as from fucking side control.

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE AMEN TO THAT.

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE in scarf hold its basically hopeless plus u feel u are getting choked

  • @DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE ; Sure is!

  • BJJ is deep shit.

  • I Like his accent.

  • I'm a guy, I'm 100% straight, but thats a ncie accent :)

Also theres no bullshit in his talk - all simple and practical explanation

  • no one asked you if you were gay or straight

  • no one asked you to state the obvious. it was pre-emptive

  • It always cracks me up when people make fun of someone's bad English. This dude speaks Portuguese and conversational English. The bulk of the posters no doubt only speak English, and probably not all that well; and yet, we poke fun at someone who speaks English as a 2nd language. I'm just sayin'...

  • @tapout00 I think he speaks pretty good english he speaks better english then a lot of people that have spoken english all of their life. lol

  • on top of that, this guy is sharing his BJJ knowledge and techniques, and they still talk shit...

  • @tapout00 He knows far more than conversational English. But I'm willing to be he speaks Portuguese more on a daily basis. His accent is neat, don't hate on it. He's an amazing grappler.

  • @tapout00 Demians english seems fine to me I have this DVD and I understand it very clearly. It's such a good DVD. Demian Maia is so talented it's insane.

  • @tapout00 Yea, right. God forbid someone wants to learn multiple languages!! People are ignorant, and when they have nothing intelligent to say, they attack what they hear, see.

  • @tapout00 dude, i tooootally agree. in fact, compared to some other people (anderson silva, for example), this guy's english is stellar. he gets his thoughts across, and well.

funny you mention the posters on this site, who probably don't have a sufficient grasp of their own language to even begin to criticize this guy's english.

    *sigh*

    |the kid|

  • @tapout00 Yeah this is true my first language is german and my second language is english.

Oh ich liebe mein Land, in Deutschland. Oh ja, das so ein schönes Ort zum Leben. Aber ich lebe in Kanada seine schön, aber nicht so schön wie Deutschland. YAY deutschen Stolz

  • @tapout00 Good point.

  • @tapout00 tooooooooootttttttttaaaaalllllyyyy agree with ypu

  • @tapout00 Pretty sure he speaks Spanish too.

  • @tapout00 so damn true

  • @tapout00

I actually think that they are better teachers because of the limited vocabulary. They use simple terms that doesn't make learning very complicated

  • @tapout00 not to metion, he's taking time out to demonstrate very good brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques for FREE. I pay good money to learn bjj, and he's making a video to help people without charging anything. Yes, people are ignorant.

  • @tapout00 Demian Maia's Portuguese is lightyears better than those ignorant idiots anyway. I'd love to have Maia as a BJJ instructor. He's a world class grappler.

  • @tapout00 Honestly I think it sounds cooler this way anyway. :P

  • Hey invented a new word. "LIMITATE"

    I'm using it.

  • what do you do after you bridge?

  • stuff. you do stuff. and then you win. don't lose. thats like winning, only completely different... after you bridge, just get a better position. and don't tap out. ,,,no! don't not do that! move yer hips man! aw, crap... i don't wanna watch this. utarian7, i believed in you once, but that time has passed.

  • Losing is "like winning, only completely different." You may very well be the best coach ever.

  • hip escape to create space and get your knee back in to regain guard

  • thats the one, thanks!

  • Didn't take long for muppets like Fupper16 to do their usual thing and berate a guy based on his last fight. Fupper you're a douchebag!

  • Maia had a great and entertaining run in the UFC relying only on BJJ. Nate is easily # 2or 3 in the whole UFC. the days of a pure bjj guy cleaning out a weight class are over, but he(Maia) is an improving stand up fighter as well, we'll see where he goes from here.I'm not convinced Nate can beat Silva either, but I'd love to see him as the new champ.

  • well said. BJJ is a great art but has its limitations like every other martail art around. you need to be well rounded. saying that i wouldnt write a guy off after one loss but i dont think hes ready to take on silva.

  • Easy taebo! You can only limit yourself

  • if maia gets past marquardt and silva beats henderson, there is no way maia beats silva. silva will keep the fight standing and destroy him. silva got his black belt from noguiera and is no slouch on the ground if maia can actually take him down

  • silva is very good on the ground. maia is better but silvas solid ground game will nullify maia's and hell get destroyed. maia is incredible, and if he beats marquardt then wow.

  • How can Silvas nulifiy Maia's? his BJJ is nowhere near as good as Maia's damien maia beats the best black belts in the world, hes not just some guy with good jits or a Good Black belt in jits, he steadily beats the best black belts in jits(not that i dont think Silva is a great fighter I just dont think you can compare their Jits) thats like saying that Damien has been training boxing with Wanderlei does that mean he'll nullify Andersons striking?

  • ya i see what youre saying but i think silvas versatility would allow him to avoid dangerous positions on the ground, but maia has swept the floor with ppl i thought for sure were going to beat him.

  • well u cant compare maia and silva in jiu jitsu especially if he gets past nate ( who is a bjj black belt and great wrestler). if silva keeps distance there is no doubt maia will be destroyed but he cant let maia grab him because maia is relentless with his takedowns and WILL submit him without a doubt if it goes to the ground

  • erroneous

  • Maia can takedown olympic wrestlers, and is a multi abu dhabi champion, even if somone is a good black belt thats one thing(like the ppl he beats to win abu dhabi), but Maia consistently taps HIGH lvl black belts...

  • gwaurd i lov it

  • demian maia- the silva killer

  • Brazilian women love my accent when I speak in Portuguese. :-)

  • Man I love BJJ!

Brazilians have the coolest accents when they speak English.

  • really man, are all you bloggers retarded, no offense to those who really are, but you guys seem like a bunch of either 11 or 30 yr old dungeon and dragon fanatics probably virgins too. Have you fags (no offense to any gays out there) read the ridicules comments you put out there- seriously, seriously get a life or get laid....

  • u mad?

  • he mad

  • Tell me something I don't know scrub. Ill lay this fool out to the point where he'll quit. PUNK

  • I'd say Maia is better than Silva and the Nog's at bjj so he could definatly cause hendo problems, I wonder if hendo's life span in mma is coming to an end?

Hendo's hands are good and obviously so is his wrestling but l'm not sure he'll beat Bisping!!!

  • Lol, guess you spoke too soon. Did you ever really follow Dan Henderson in pride for a while? BJJ take downs won't work on him.

  • didnt hendo get subbed by Silva..

  • i have the same gi as him

and i am a blue belt under demian

and his good friend marcelo manga trains with me often

  • thats cool manga is legit and so is demian

  • I watched this video a few months ago and it honestly added so much to my game. Awesome video Damian's awesome!

  • It doesn't matter how good hendos wrestling is, damian is going to pull guard, PERIOD..............

  • idiot

  • The blue guy is a statue.

  • Just got back from class. That head control from the ground is on fuckin point. it really works....

  • Damnnnnn Demian is hott!(:

  • I really hope he wins the title, he's such a good representative of ju-jitsu and such a nice person. Team Alliance is the best.

  • I feel bad for Anderson Silva...Maia will beat him via ground embarassment.

  • Yeah if he can get him to the ground lets not forget Anderson silva knocks people out. Maia does not.

  • Don't be so sure, Anderson Silva is a black belt under the Nogueira brothers.

  • yes but anderson has shown a tendency of looking average on the ground. maia will own him on ground as will silva dominate on feet. where fight takes place will decide winner.

  • Ask Dan Henderson if Anderson looked average on the ground.

  • hendo is not even in the same galaxy as maia on the ground! maybe takedowns but not groundwork

  • lol at "maybe takedowns"

Hendo owns takedowns, he's been training wrestling his whole life. BJJ isn't known for takedowns.

  • Have you even watched Maia? He has some unreal takedowns.

  • no BJJ guy has better takedowns than a medaling Olympic wrestler.

  • obviously not... takedowns are not the main focus of BJJ. A high level wrestler or will usually have much better takedowns as a judoka will have better throws.

Nowadays it's common for BJJ guys here in Brazil to cross train with judokas to improve their throws. Wrestling is hard to find here in Brazil, otherwise high level BJJ fighters would seek to improve their takedowns with them as well (at least the smart ones).

It's after they hit the ground that BJJ will make the difference.

  • which is why i laughed at the "maybe Henderson had better takedowns" than SIlva or Maia.

  • yes i know dude relax, it was just the way i worded it. anyway maia will own hendo on the ground

  • but henderson is an OLYMPIC wrestler you retard!!hate neewbs!!

  • First I'll just start by saying I've been fighting for 6 years and have a record of 9-1, so who's the 'neewb'. Second, yeah Hendo is an olympic wrestler but guys like GSP have proven you dont need a wrestling background to wrestle well in mma. I think Hendo wouldn't dare to take Maia down and Maia would eventually be able to get him down.

  • First i smell bullshit, second Gsp has been wrestling with exiled east European champions since he was 20!!guys from Russia,Ukraine,Serbia some of the best wrestlers in the world!so i would call that a very good WRESTLING back round. Third Hendo doesn't need to take maia down because of that doomsday device he calls his right hand! idiot

  • But Hendo can use is wrestling so Maia can never take him down and Henmdo has KO Wanderley Silva, soI say Maia cant take him down and gets koed.

  • maia is gonna pull halfguard and then go to oldschool. if that doesnt work he will go to the plan b sweep. i shit you not.

  • why are you calling it by stupid eddie bravo names.

  • those are the names i know. i know cuz i use em. maia did it in his fight against jason macdonald and it got him top position real quick.

  • Hendo has been tapped out several times in his career by muchless gifted submission fighters. I think if hendo got a takedown maia would keep him there and tap him. and hendo can be taken down he doesnt have crazy defence. would be an awesome fight though

  • Hendo's ability in wrestling completely dictates where the fight goes, not a hope in hell maia can take hendo down. So hendo would keep it standing and smash him with a right. But if it does go to the ground my boy maia would be all over that before hendo could even blink!

  • what makes you think that a person who has been training judo and bjj since he was a child, wouldn't be able to dictate where a fight goes?

  • dont be so fucking stupid and ignorant.

henderson was an olympic wrestler. Maia was hardly a top judo fighter.

But maia is improving he landed that beautiful lateral drop on sonnen who was a good wrestler himself.

  • i never said which way i thought the fight was going. i was just simply implying that maia can be a problem for anyone. also there are more polite ways to disagree with someone.

  • During round 2 of the Hendo vs Silva (Anderson) Hendo goes for a takedown on Silva in the first minute or so of that round and ends up getting put on his back himself. I personally think that Maia's takedowns and ground game are superior to Silva's so I'd say Maia has a good chance of taking Dan down. The last wrestler that Maia fought (not as good as Dan) but he took that guy down with a great throw right into mount and then transitioned right to a triangle. Plus he can always pull guard.

  • maia would never take Dan(greco champion) Henderson down!Anderson took dan down cause dan was rocked.

  • he would probably pull guard on him

  • yeah thats what i said.or were you just agreeing with me?

  • i was agreeing with ur idea lolz

he wud have some trouble submitting him but he can surely catch him

    <
