Yea, how about using a clamp to apply pressure across the length to hold the new piece in place for you to toenail with both hands away from the swinging hammer?

Should have started yout 'toenail" first or you could have drove a nail into the vertical board just under the bottom of the short horizontal board and left it sticking out an inch or so for it to rest on, or , or ,or,lol. It's just the way you did it that seems to make it look harder then it should have been. Maybe you should go with pre-drilling and screws. Nails are for the pro's.
