  • We had the same crap happen to us. The editor at our local newspaper quoted the Railroad Carriers as stating that the average employee at the Railroad makes 86 dollars an hour. They used the same fuzzy math that the Times did. I make less than 25 dollars an hour and even pay 200 of that a month back into my healthcare plan, a portion of that back into my retirement plan and on top of that union dues. I make a good living but no where near what it is portrayed as in the media.

  • Well, I suppose the Revolutionary War actually was treason. That was based on the idea that the rights came down from the King. However, the United States was built on the idea that the power travels up through the people to the government and they have every right to remove that power if it is needed.

    But I get what you mean and it is a good point.

  • I am an outsider from a country that has been as it is for about 500 years. The way the US started feels like an association of colonies to fight for independence. It was either that or to be crushed one by one. If you guide yourself by the patriotic intentions of the founding fathers then secession is treason. If you follow what the US actually was it is NOT. That is why they tried so hard to accomodate everybody in the constitution and when setting up the government, to prevent breakaways

  • I...get the individual statement that you made, but I'm not sure what your overall point is.

    The Founding Fathers certainly envisioned and strove for a national coalition of states unified under the banner of one federal government, but they never said anything about people being forced to stay in the Union once they joined. The FF must have been big believers in secession; that is what they wanted to do with England. However, there was no peaceable way to do that under the colonial system.

  • And I think that the FF knew the US was too small and weak to survive in pieces. And that it would be better it was one nation in the future than a dozen quarreling like in Europe. That is why they tried to make it so all would be happy NOT to seceed. And then the South went histerical over Lincoln after decades of resenting being despised by the North.

    Was it legal to seceed? Yes. Did the FF want it to happen? NO. Is it treason now? Yes.

    The time to argue is past. Finished.

  • Really? You are telling me that the time for dissent is past? Are we all supposed to shut up and follow in lockstep whoever is in power.

    The time for argument and discussion is always now! If there is ever a time when we can not argue in the United States, then the United States is dead as the FF intended.

    Also, if it was, by your own admission, legal to seceed, how has it become treason? I do not recall when the Constitution was amended on that account.

  • It is my firm belief that you have to dissent if needed. And if they tell you you cannot dissent you have to dissent with bullets, explosives and the rope. Bush tried that, and if he had been able to get a third term and got it he would have turned the US into nazi Germany. Dissent all you want and I'll applaud you all the way.

    But the US is the UNITED States and THAT is not a matter for discussion anymore. America, love it or leave it. Sorry but this is not Europe or Asia or Africa.

    Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that the Federal gov. can force states to stay in the union.. It Does say in the Constitution that all rights not given to the Federal government resides in the states and the people. Therefore, it is the states right to seceed. Your opinion does not change the supreme law of the land.

    I dislike Bush because of his socialistic tendencies, but I know of nothing he did to silence dissent.

  • Oh yes, let's blame the South for the Civil war... it's not as if it was Lincoln's decision to "preserve the union." I agree with Olbermann that Beck is a hypocrite if he ever said "love it or leave it" (I hate that phrase), but secession is a valid thing to do (just as leaving the country as individuals) when you severely disagree with what the government is doing.

  • I listen to Glenn Beck constantly, and I haven't heard him say that. Considering that he has spent three hours a day on the radio for many, many years, I would not be surprised if he has said that before (perhaps in just or hyperbole or perhaps in all seriousness). However, I can tell you it is not a theme of his.

  • Toyota stock will decrease in value as Toyota workers go into retirement if they're wage is only being figured in actual hours worked by an employee.     If Obama did horribly, and destroyed a certain state or area, then they'd at least be able to put forth a case.

    With Bush's (un)favourables, people should have been able to invoke their constitutional right to remove the unpopular government and replace it, no problem. This was not the case.

    If the man's going to trample over the constitution, why would he allow its rules to overthrow him?

  • Yeah, they should have given both sides a piece here. The $70 comes straight from GM HR papers, so the times took it as fact.

    They should have broken it down to give readers a better understanding what it means.

    Then they could have said that all those things are separately negotiated and and often renegotiated. As such, you can not determine current employee pay by what they may retire with 20-30 years down the line.

  • See Texas vs. White. A state does not have the right to unilaterally secede under the constitution. It can be argued that congress may pass a law allowing a state to secede, but that's as far as it goes.

Based on his previous position, many southerners questioned Chase's impartiality and believed he should have recused himself from the decision.   • That's a fair assessment. I respect southerners right to disagree with the law, and also recognize , that it is settled law.

    I think there are better ways to go about things than threatening to secede every time you don't get your own way. In many ways the South behaves very much like Quebec in my own country of Canada. It's very much dealing with a spoiled child.

  • Well there comes a time when lines must be drawn. The Federal government is totally out of control, feeding off everyone's labor like a leech, causing terrorists to come and attack us with our insane foreign policy (which obama is only going to continue), and debasing our currency. They usurp states rights and have since the Civil War. The federal govt. has devolved into a predatory caste of society and nothing more. States should be able to decline participation in Socialism if they so desire.

  • It is inconceivable that a free state would voluntarily enter into an agreement with another party that authorized force to be used against the smaller member in the event of a disagreement.

    The States as free and independent entities, having just won their independence from Britain, certainly did not endow the Federal government with the right to use force to coerce a state. The use of force to coerce a state is comparable to one nation invading another to establish their will.

  • Mo where in the Constitution did Lincoln have the authority to stop secession. More than half a million people died because of that tyrant. When people disagreed he had them jailed indefinitely with no trial. Sounds vaguely familiar to other dictators and tyrants throughout history (bush as well). You really ought to search youtube for The Philosophy of Liberty video. Thats what this nation was founded upon and has been cast aside for statism by an increasingly ignorant populace.

  • That's fair enough. I assume you are against the welfare state status of the south, and I can't fault your logic for that. I'm always amazed that the tax basis for your country is almost entirely from 3 states (California, New York and Texas), and yet all these "red" states are the ones who claim to be conservatives.

    The reason that these "conservatives", ( and I use those "" consciously by the way) are so pro military, is that it is a way for military spending(ie welfare) to be sent South.
