The show's been on both Broadway and the West End for so long that it's gonna be weird when it has closed. Just the idea of it closing one day is weird! It's hard to imagine New York City without Phantom. Maybe we'll be lucky and Phantom will never close!
We're doing Phantom of the Opera at my school for our musical. Our school's shows are very quality shows and many people in our cast are going on to study vocal performace, dance, theatre etc. It's an amazing show.
I'm playing the role of Meg Giry. It's an honor to be in the show!
My favorite phantom forever will be Peter Karrie. His voice could fill the theatre, but the emotion he put into it was so tremendous. I traveled every summer to see him perform it live.
Best story ever told. I'm thirteen years old, and should be obsessing over Justin Bieber. The book was amazing, the movie incredible. I MUST see the live show...
Michael Crawford is still the best Phantom ever. All others lack the emotional poignancy, and pure sensuality that Michael has. He's the one who won all the awards for his portrayal. He IS the Phantom.
@katerina522 Just saw your posting, go to his fan club's web page, mcifa.com, and join his devoted followers. I'm not aware he's performed for a few years now but we're still hoping!
To all of you dishing the movie, sorry, I loved it! It was amazing. And hello, the phantoms voice was always intended to be a bit untrained. I LOVED Gerry's voice, and his acting was amazing. Emmy was fantastic too. She was 16 for crying out loud!!
er HELLO, the Phantom's voice was NOT supposed to be untrained. He's supposed to be the Angel of Music!
And just cos Emmy was 16 doesn't excuse her. Susanna Foster, who played Christine in the 1943 version, could have easily outsung Emmy any day, and she was the same age when she played the role!
Wicked was the most boring show I have ever seen, typically americanised, slick with no feeling whatever, I had high hopes but was bored to tears after ten minutes.
I hate Wicked too. Christine's high note in "Phantom" trumps Elphaba's high note in "Defying Gravity"--someone once tried to tell me Elphaba's note was higher than Christine's. I wanted to deck them. And what about those costumes? Seriously? Did they even attempt to make them high quality?
Love Never Dies sounds like it was written by preschoolers for preschoolers too though. "The day starts, the day ends, time goes by"...all to please the silly nonsensical hopes of teenybopper Phantom fangirls who've never even heard of Gaston Leroux.
What kind of accent does the narrator have.. it sounds like an irish person's trying to have an american one.. and OMG THAT PLANE IS THE COOLEST THING EVER
There's a Phantom PLANE?!?!?! OMG, that is the coolest thing I've seen since the Phantom duble decker bus!!!! (sorry, I know that type of bus has an official name, I'm just too psyched out right now to think of it!!!) SOOO cool!!!!
Im a huge MC fan, even outside of Phantom. The guy is brilliant. Gerard Butler didn't fit the character in any way, shape, or form. The part wasn't right for him. His prescence (and inability to sing) took the beleivablity right out of it.
Agreed. GB could not sing. This brought down his acting of a more menacing phantom, which I thought could have been done well had butler been able to sing as well, but his awful voice ruined that. Emmy Rossum lacked the power of a classically trained singer like Brightman. IMO, the only person in there who surpassed the original play was Patrick Wilson (Raoul). He played his role perfectly, and his voice fit it much better than the dude who played the same character on stage.
@dorkandproudofit I haven't seen the live show...YET...but I did like the movie. You do gotta give it some credit, though. I mean, Gerard was a known actor, so they put him in. If it weren't for the movie, I don't think I would have even heard of Phantom of the Opera, and would be obsessing over Justin Bieber instead of musical theatre.
@emmyrossumfn101 I hope you make it to the show someday, you'll be blown away by how much better it is than the movie. Even the blurry YT clips show how wonderful the stage version is. I hope you've listened to the original casts recording, too, to learn how it should be sung. It's great to see posting by young folks who want to appreciate the world beyond MTV. I wish I could afford to take plane loads to see Phantom on Broadway, it's the experience of a lifetime.

The only 'big' musical nowadays is Wicked.
I hope Love Never Dies and ALW's Wizard runs Wicked out of business :)
I hate wicked it was written by preschoolers for preschoolers.

Oh don't worry. Wicked may be big, but Phantom is just like a MONSTER. Irreplacable.
