I know that Birbiglia just isn't good at the ballbusting that goes on among comics on the O&A show and is grasping at straws, but that "I'm 50 years old and still doing comedy" shot at Vos is weird and telling. It shows that Birbiglia looks down on stand-up. He sees it as a stepping stone to something else.

That said, his Bill Burr impression is funny.

I don't doubt Vos is smart as hell, but the thing here was that Birbiglia was trying to have fun with a friend goofing each other, and then Vos unleashed all kinds of extremely personal shit that you could tell he has been thinking about and brewing over for awhile. I think Vos killed Birbiglia here. This is the perfect demonstration of a theory I've had for a long time. Some comics are not funny 'off-the-top-of-their-head', not spontaneously funny or quick-witted. But they are good writers, they have good stand-up routines. Mike Birbiglia is the perfect example of this.

Some other comics are spontaneously funny, they're quick-witted, but they're not great writers, their stand-up routine is not that great. Perfect examples are Rich Vos and Patrice O'Neal..

There's no need to discredit a comic just because they can't do something they don't have to do. Sure Shaquille O'Neal can play defense, but he can't free throw for shit.
