@kilimitinu First of all, it not plastic, its called carbon fiber. It's 10x stronger than plastic, and weighs amazingly light. It's purpose is to maximize the aerodynamics of the bike, by giving the wind a surface to travel over smoothly and without much resistance. It does that, while keeping the wheel significantly light. When you're a cyclist trying to beat other cyclists by mere seconds, aerodynamic features like that are crucial.
i never understood the aero dynamics of the helmets... if they dont have helmets wont their be less wind drag and less weight and heat/sweat to deal with? it looks like the shape of the helmet seem aero but wouldnt a swim cap be even more aero?
@themaniusedtob do you think the UCI these days would allow riders to compete without helmets? riders today can't even take their helmets off when they climb up mountain-top finishes. the aero helmets today are exactly like swim caps, only they're built to within the impact of a heavy crash.
An aero helmet smooths out the air going from the riders head to their back. Most data on aero helmets over conventional helmets shows anywhere from 40-90 seconds saved in a 40k TT depending on the helmet, and the position of the rider.
I was at this time trail, and it was amazing. When Cancellara came to the finish the crowed went crazy. I was sreaming so loud i could. It was amazing. He is the best ever!!
For those all pissy about pronunciation, Cancellara is an Italian name (his parents immigrated to Switzerland). In Italian, the is no 'k' in the alphabet, so the 'c' is used for numerous sounds. A "c" followed by and "e" or "i" is pronounced with a "ch" sound like in Cinelli. A "c" followed by an "a,u,o" like in Coppi is pronounced like 'k'.
Therefore, Can-che-llara should be correct. However, I don't know his personal preference, but likely, neither do any of us.
what kind of a time trial distance is this? only 4.8km? I thought there's a range set for UCI-based TTs?

What's the difference between a normal wheel, and the one with plastic around (the one on the front)?

4.8 that is short dude. It's over in about 2 minutes. You have to warm up for an hour before to be warm enough for maximum power.
