Indeed, it's amazing to see how Salonga has grown into the role of Fantine: from this moment prior to her Broadway stint (she had just started studying Hugo's book thoroughly), to Les Mis' anniversary where Salonga's informed and spectacular performance showed her ACTING AND VOCAL SUPERIORITY over the great Patti Lupone and the much-overrated Ruthie Henshall. It's no suprise that theatre critics have dubbed Salonga The Legendary Fantine!
It is STUPID to compare a single outing of this song in a generic concert with Ruthie's performance in character on stage. Lea Salonga's performance at the Les MIz 25th anniversary in October 2010 shows HOW MUCH BETTER she is than ALL ACTORS COMBINED who have ever played Fantine - in terms of voice, every nuance of emotion, diction, and particularly stage presence. Salonga was -- and remains -- the best Eponine, but now adds BEST FANTINE EVER to her credentials.
I stumbled into another version of this song by Lea Salonga and came here to hear if I had stumbled into a one time accident only and Lea could sing better than this.

Susan Boyle' voice is trained! Not the magnitude as that of Lea Salonga. Reminder, Lea performed in Les Miserables in London. If Susan started performing when she was young as Lea.... She's just as good or better.

I'm sorry; I agree that Susan Boyle is better. I have actually seen Salonga perform and consequently prefer Boyle's voice. Not to say Salonga isn't good, she is.
In a musical a voice may be not that excellent, but the soul and emotion still brings shivers down your spine. Lea's voice is quite good, but somehow it's too much mannerism and too little soul for me.
I've listened to Lupone, Paige and now Lea Salonga.
Lea has a beautiful voice, but needs some control. Susan needs to enunciate, but that is a much smaller problem. Lupone was fantastic as was Paige. Only Susan gave me chills. Not because she's the under-dog...it is her voice and interpretation."

it's the truth though...I'm not a broadway afficionado by any stretch. If I had not heard of Susan Boyle I would have never been curious enough to hear other versions. This is good for any artist who has sung "I dreamed a dream" in the past. It certainly made me appreciate Lea's talent and now I know about her. The fact that "Susan brought me here" is a good thing.
for the people who are saying "susan boyle IS fantine" learn the story. fantine's character is a deserted single mother who had to resort to prostitution to support her daughter, eventually leading to her tragic death, which is what this song is about. even if you base the context of the song to her life, fantine and susan boyle are nothing alike.
After listening all the singers sing the same song, I prefer Susan. She is gifted. Her voice is heaven. The emotion is so clear, you can almost feel the thing happening to you! :D

Until Susan we were comparing on a relatively common theatrical basis. Personally I would say having watched all the versions I can find that lea was the best, on the ear, eye and dramatically. Ruth H can sing alright ... but that lisp on the Ss !!! Lea is an outstanding professional no question clearly top class; the best ? but Susan with her simplicity and style IS Fontine they are different Lea is magic, fantastic, wonderful - so professional however I prefer to listen to and watch Susan

Susan Boyle is not a professionally trained singer with a flawless voice. Lea is superior. however given the empathy, breathing and circumstance Susan's version is my favourite I could hear it again and again I have seen about ten versions on Youtube Maybe Susan has the least voice of all of them technically, if say measured on some computerised chart but hers is the most pleasurable she just gets inside you she is Fontine so the purists may wince but Susan Boyle has nailed this one

Yes, Susan Boyle brought me here. I've listened to about 10 broadway singers do this song tonight and Susan blew them away. I listened without seeing the faces - that's NOT what matters here. Susan's voice just has a certain something that the others don't have. Susan is far and away the best. Patti LaPone was one of the worst on this song. - more talking than singing! Lea's version is wonderful, but lack's a certain quality which Susan posseses.
This was excellent, but Susan has a stronger voice. Lea used a beautiful pianissimo on the really hard notes, while Susan not only hit those notes, but was able to do so with crescendo.

call me inhumane but i love otello with or without his back story... well he does have a penchant for mellow drama... but i would never have known it was due to unfortunate events in his life... and he later outgrew that tendency anyway...

She's good on this piece, but the best IMO is Ruthie Henshall, that gives me chills!
I think Lea does a much better job of "On MY Own" that song just fits her voice perfectly and she is so pwerful with that piece!!

i really hope we can stop talking about boyle in videos not directly related to her! this is too much fuss about someone who can barely hold a vibrato... comments about her back story are getting old. i think everyone by now has gotten d point, she has a good voice and do not judge a book by its freaking cover!!!

errrm why is every1 raving about susan boyle? yes she can sing but she isnt AMAZING joanna ampil and kerry ellis are the best at this song, i feel it needs belt quality! susan boyles ok, bot great tho as every1 is makin out, she is a gimmick, these women have worked hard to get where they are! don't diss the pros! x

You're missing the point on Susan's story.
Not to compare who sings this or that song better... it's the fact that Susan has a talent that people perceives that doesn't match with her looks. Not judging a book by its cover thing.

Susan Boyle' voice is trained! Not the magnitude as that of Lea Salonga. Reminder, Lea performed in Les Miserables in London. If Susan started performing when she was young as Lea.... She's just as good or better.

And I don't think Susan Boyle is quite up there with these west end and broadway singers quite yet, not saying she can't get there, but you only need to listen to Lea Salonga and hear the standard she has to compare to. I'm not tryin gto offend anyone, just giving my opinion.

I loved Susan Boyle, I'll be honest, but I hate the fact that people go on about these people being Trained singers. Of course they are! It's their job!! How can you critise them for that?? They obviously have natural singing talent as it is, but is it so wrong to do everything you can to improve your voice?

no disrespect but boyle's version was a bit karaoke-ish... she started really well but couldn't hold her vibrato and went flat on several occasions. i'm not sure what "emotions" people were talking about coz it felt to me she was singing in a karaoke d entire time... but true, she has a good voice...

I am not the kind of person that gives advices (you obviously know much about music).But please ENJOY music.Yes, Lea Salonga is great.But when you listen to a 4y little girl singing the same song is something else.Music is not in the notes but deep in the heart of the singer...

i honestly don't want to talk about verdi here. this is neither the proper venue or occasion to do so... and i don't understand d comparison . are you trying to say that the verdi's recognition is largely due to his back story? coz, i would flatly say NO!!! i like many others, have no idea what his back story is, which goes to show one can separate the two. one can enjoy d music w/o knowing his back story.

Some control are you kidding? Lea's been intensely trained, she has SUCH an impressive resume and if you actually SAW her perform the role you would not be saying she has no control and that Boyle is better

In a musical a voice may be not that excellent, but the soul and emotion still brings shivers down your spine. Lea's voice is quite good, but somehow it's too much mannerism and too little soul for me.

I've listened to Lupone, Paige and now Lea Salonga.
Lea has a beautiful voice, but needs some control. Susan needs to enunciate, but that is a much smaller problem. Lupone was fantastic as was Paige.
Only Susan gave me chills. Not because she's the under-dog...it is her voice and interpretation.

it's the truth though...I'm not a broadway afficionado by any stretch. If I had not heard of Susan Boyle I would have never been curious enough to hear other versions. This is good for any artist who has sung "I dreamed a dream" in the past. It certainly made me appreciate Lea's talent and now I know about her. The fact that "Susan brought me here" is a good thing.

for the people who are saying "susan boyle IS fantine" learn the story. fantine's character is a deserted single mother who had to resort to prostitution to support her daughter, eventually leading to her tragic death, which is what this song is about. even if you base the context of the song to her life, fantine and susan boyle are nothing alike.
i just think it's funny when people say that.

Susan Boyle's version had a lot of emotion because of her background and circumstances.The way the world views and rewards talent these days based on beauty and youth has caused a lot of dreams to die for so many people. Susan Boyle was the example of why dreams should never die.People have found new inspiration from her courage to face the world despite all of the odds.For all the Susan critics you need to simply realize that people just want a fair chance in life

Lea achieved the same thing....but with the asian community...she paved the way for other asian singers to make something of themselves especially in the broadway scene....she has inspired many too...with the roles she has played, winning many awards including a Tony...Lea will always be Disney's Princess Jasmine & Mulan, the best eponine, kim in miss saigon, and one of the best fantines....

Yes, Susan Boyle brought me here. I've listened to about 10 broadway singers do this song tonight and Susan blew them away. I listened without seeing the faces - that's NOT what matters here. Susan's voice just has a certain something that the others don't have. Susan is far and away the best. Patti LaPone was one of the worst on this song. - more talking than singing! Lea's version is wonderful, but lack's a certain quality which Susan posseses.

This was excellent, but Susan has a stronger voice. Lea used a beautiful pianissimo on the really hard notes, while Susan not only hit those notes, but was able to do so with crescendo.

Susan Boyle sang it well, sure.. but i don't think she's better than Lea Salonga...the only reason why she became an instant phenomenon is becoz a lot of people didn't expect her to sing that well...come on people, if she's pretty im sure things would be a lot different... the judges esp simon would be more critical to her and regard her as another wannabe...He had come across with a lot of pretty and more talented contestants in AI but still can't get his 100% approval..But, good luck to Susan

You don't have to be ugly to feel pain or to understand this song. Susan is a good singer, but let's call a spade a spade. If she was beautiful and sounded exactly the same, she would've been written off merely as a decent showtune singer and not made it anywhere on the show. Instead, she's ugly, so now she's an international celebrity and her mindless fans are going around spamming other singers' videos. Susan Boyle failed to open your mind. Leah Salonga sounded better Susan Boyle. Leah's voice quality is better, imo. Plus she has more control over her voice. BUT then again, Leah had years and years of broadway training and Susan Boyle did not.
I think Susan did justice to this song. Very beautiful voice. Talented singer.

People are right, you cant compare these two women to each other...because they are singing in different styles.This song was written and composed for a musical, sang to capture a moment in a story.This is how Lea sings it, more so beautifully.
Ms. Boyle's heartfelt rendition is in a different mood.
Susan's rendition of "Cry Me A River" leaked, give a listen.Also consider that while Ms. Salonga would cover this song beautifully as well, probably wouldn't compare.
