  • @annief31 LOL! Next time, fans of "career-less has-beens" should refrain from mentioning creatures beneath Salonga in videos that are not about these untalented, "wooden" performers, ha ha ha...

  • @LtsSng1: What a fitting description of Ruthie Henshall's voice: MATRONLY (totally inappropriate for Fantine's characterization). Henshall has a rough, ugly voice and her 10th anniv "acting" was as wooden as a tree. It's no wonder that being a career-less now, Henshall has been described by posters as a "domestic starlet has-been," esp. compared to her UK counterpart international sensation Susan Boyle.

  • Luxray bingo. I could not have said it better. Ruthe has a quality to her voice a matronly lovely edge to her voice that makes her unique for this role. In my opinion after the 10th reunion this show should have never again been presented. You can't improve on the best-don't try.

  • Her voice is so beautiful...everything she touches (or sings :)) turns to gold

  • Indeed, it's amazing to see how Salonga has grown into the role of Fantine: from this moment prior to her Broadway stint (she had just started studying Hugo's book thoroughly), to Les Mis' anniversary where Salonga's informed and spectacular performance showed her ACTING AND VOCAL SUPERIORITY over the great Patti Lupone and the much-overrated Ruthie Henshall. It's no suprise that theatre critics have dubbed Salonga The Legendary Fantine!

  • It is STUPID to compare a single outing of this song in a generic concert with Ruthie's performance in character on stage. Lea Salonga's performance at the Les MIz 25th anniversary in October 2010 shows HOW MUCH BETTER she is than ALL ACTORS COMBINED who have ever played Fantine - in terms of voice, every nuance of emotion, diction, and particularly stage presence. Salonga was -- and remains -- the best Eponine, but now adds BEST FANTINE EVER to her credentials.

  • She is singing a realistic lyric with an oriental emotion. Filipino singers cannot avoid this singing style. That includes Lea.

  • the best performance I've heard

  • I used to collect different players playing Tchaikovsky's violin Concerto. All different and I loved them all. So with the parts in Les Miserables.

Let up and enjoy each artist singing her own part!

  • See, maybe I'm retarded. But I hear a lot of emotion in this song. I think her voice is magnificent.

  • i LOVE Lea!!!!!!!!

  • I stumbled into another version of this song by Lea Salonga and came here to hear if I had stumbled into a one time accident only and Lea could sing better than this.

Nope. No feeling for the lyrics at all,

  • Lea's voice is beautiful. But I can't buy this performance... she doesn't seem like Fantine at all to me. I could barely buy her portrayal of Eponine.

  • I agree with derdriui...Ruthie Henshall really did set the bar quite high but I believe the incredible Lea sang this song beautifully. It's an amazing rendition. Ruthie Henshall and Lea Salonga are both fantastic singers and we should all just watch and enjoy their performance.

  • excellent!!!oh no lea's no.1 critic is here again..french294 if u dont like her why keep watching?

  • Ruthie set the bar really high for this song. It has to sung with that world weariness. Still, talented singing!

  • lovely !amazing voice!!

  • I love her as Fantine. I think Fantine suits her acting and singing better than Eponine *dodges heavy objects being thrown at her*

  • And wow this video sucks. shes awesome but whoever recorded this needs a better camera!

  • Comment removed

  • stop fucking talking about how much you hate susan boyle, and enjoy the damn song cos lea salonga is singing it. this video is about her and her singing the song, so TALK ABOUT THAT INSTEAD.

    that is all.

    kpleasethanksbye.

  • She is great, but quality of the recording is so poor that makes comparisions difficult.

  • Disagree!! Lea OWNS Les Mis!

  • what-evur :s

  • The best interpretation of this song by far! Loved it!

  • This is the best interpretation ever. I heard Patti Lupone, Susan Boyle and others but Leah is a lot better, Vocals, emotions, everything.

  • I adore her voice! what a beautiful performance.

  • Culture oneself musically then I'll bet you'll distinguish susan's from lea's singing...then you would understand why lea is a far better singer. :)

  • Leah is alot better than susan boil for god sake!!! 1million alot better!!!!clean ur ears n open ur heart people.....

Susan Boyle's rendition is much better

    nao fala besteira

susan nao sabe cantar, nao tem tecnica, apenas tem um vozerao, é amadora.

mas tambem gostei dela, acho que tem um talento a ser trabalhado

  • Note:

    Lea: 9,5

    Susan: 9,1

  • listen closely how Lea Salonga delivered this song! The interpretation was there, the presence of emotion was enveloping the whole song and try to look deeper and you will see the actual difference!

  • beautiful control and interpretation. just a terrific rendition

  • I think this was taken in her iloilo City concert. I've watched this live. can remember her gown. Unless she re-used it. ehehe

  • she always had terrible sense of fashion i remember attending her concert in 2003 with all those Papier- mâché attached to her dress, it leaves something to be desired ...

  • THIS SONG IS EVIIILLL!!!!

  • ditto

  • a bit boring

  • Lea Salonga brought me here:)!

  • I close my eyes and listen to this, and it's just beautiful... wonderful, amazing, yes angelic! fantastic! superb, and very moving... Thank you.

  • Fantastic

  • an angelic voice

  • Copy and paste if someone without a life brought you here!!!

  • wow what a beautiful voice...like and angel

  • to every one saying that lea salonga is copying susan boyle, just see that this video uploaded Feb,2007, susan got noticed this year 2009 so pls!!!! Lea is a very good singer here in Philippines. I do love susan boyle but do love also Lea Salonga

  • Are people really saying that??

Never mind what date the video was uploaded, how about the fact that Lea has been playing the part of Fantine on Broadway???

I don't even know why people are discussing Susan Boyle on this video - it's not related, apart from the song! Grrr! x

  • You're absolutely right. Lea Salonga has been on the scene for close to 20 years...ever since Miss Saigon. I love Susan Boyle..but I don't think Lea has need to copy her.

  • OMG... nitwits comparing Susan Boyle to a Lea Salonga... they need to check their ears... Lea's voice and artistry is several generations far ahead from Susan... PULLLEEAASEE... I agree with you, Novycute

  • i love this video

  • A SECRET so sneaky for Susan Boyle uses to make us cry. Just watch 140 Tubarc - Susan Boyle Secret Code for Weeping. Give me a feedback if you were smart enough to get it . . ..

  • call me inhumane but i love otello with or without his back story... well he does have a penchant for mellow drama... but i would never have known it was due to unfortunate events in his life... and he later outgrew that tendency anyway...

  • She's good on this piece, but the best IMO is Ruthie Henshall, that gives me chills!

I think Lea does a much better job of "On MY Own" that song just fits her voice perfectly and she is so pwerful with that piece!!

  • Lea's absolutely amazing. Saw in Miss Saigon (West End) in the early-90s. Still couldn't forget that!

  • GET OVER YOURSELVES PEOPLE!!!!!

  • To all the people who say that Susan is better than Lea, please get a life. Susan made mistakes in the Larry King show. Susan is nowhere near the level ofLlea and other real singers.

  • I agree with stigie1978!!!

  • i really hope we can stop talking about boyle in videos not directly related to her! this is too much fuss about someone who can barely hold a vibrato... comments about her back story are getting old. i think everyone by now has gotten d point, she has a good voice and do not judge a book by its freaking cover!!!

  • errrm why is every1 raving about susan boyle? yes she can sing but she isnt AMAZING joanna ampil and kerry ellis are the best at this song, i feel it needs belt quality! susan boyles ok, bot great tho as every1 is makin out, she is a gimmick, these women have worked hard to get where they are! don't diss the pros! x

  • You're missing the point on Susan's story.

Not to compare who sings this or that song better... it's the fact that Susan has a talent that people perceives that doesn't match with her looks. Not judging a book by its cover thing.

  • Susan Boyle' voice is trained! Not the magnitude as that of Lea Salonga. Reminder, Lea performed in Les Miserables in London. If Susan started performing when she was young as Lea.... She's just as good or better.

  • And I don't think Susan Boyle is quite up there with these west end and broadway singers quite yet, not saying she can't get there, but you only need to listen to Lea Salonga and hear the standard she has to compare to. I'm not tryin gto offend anyone, just giving my opinion.

    x

  • I loved Susan Boyle, I'll be honest, but I hate the fact that people go on about these people being Trained singers. Of course they are! It's their job!! How can you critise them for that?? They obviously have natural singing talent as it is, but is it so wrong to do everything you can to improve your voice?

  • no disrespect but boyle's version was a bit karaoke-ish... she started really well but couldn't hold her vibrato and went flat on several occasions. i'm not sure what "emotions" people were talking about coz it felt to me she was singing in a karaoke d entire time... but true, she has a good voice...

  • stigie1978, my friend, you are too cruel with Susan. You try to find the feeling in the music notes.Susan is an ordinary woman, she sings without technique, first time in front of an audience (negative one) and creates a miracle!Isn't that touching for you???

  • Forgive me Mihail99pap, my friend, but i would have to maintain that my previous remark was a pretty fair assessment of boyle's performance. i just took out d drama that surrounded the buzz... and if u want cruel, ignorant, and unfair, u should look at the comments boyle spammers has left in other les miz videos against d original performers...

  • I am not the kind of person that gives advices (you obviously know much about music). But please ENJOY music.Yes, Lea Salonga is great. But when you listen to a 4y little girl singing the same song is something else.Music is not in the notes but deep in the heart of the singer...

  • I'm glad that u r not the kind of person that gives unsolicited advices coz neither am I... I do enjoy music and I'm not going to apologize if the standards I hold for musicians are a bit high and if i want to separate the back story from the real music when enjoying music...

  • So you separate Verdi's music from Verdi's life?

  • i honestly don't want to talk about verdi here. this is neither the proper venue or occasion to do so... and i don't understand d comparison . are you trying to say that the verdi's recognition is largely due to his back story? coz, i would flatly say NO!!! i like many others, have no idea what his back story is, which goes to show one can separate the two. one can enjoy d music w/o knowing his back story.

  • I have compared the other greats who have sung this song, and my own preferences are Ruthie Henshall,Lea Salonga, and yes Susan BOYLE.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Good piece but bad quality video

  • leah is a star since 2 decades so u cant compare her.... she made her own niche in broadway..shes an icon! susan boyle is a upcomming star,.,... ok? lea is spectacular... i watched her last year at les misarables... new york! u sign an autograph for my brother and thank u lea!

  • susan boyle uses a higher tone and it sounds amazing...lea is the best both of them have their own style! u can compare them...i saw lea at broadway ny...she was amazing! boyle is good too...but i would say lea has a unique universal voice! FACT!

  • For us, the best performers of this song are Debbie Byrne and Susan Boyle. The others are great, but these two ladies are/were fabulous.

  • Some control are you kidding? Lea's been intensely trained, she has SUCH an impressive resume and if you actually SAW her perform the role you would not be saying she has no control and that Boyle is better

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Lupone....Paige.....Hensall.....Salonga..............and now Susan Boyle too!! LOL!

Check out Ruthie Hensall singing this !!!

    IMO, Ruthie is BEST !!

  • check out this version of Lea -> Lea Salonga- UNCUT Finale- I Dreamed A Dream.

  • Susan boyle brought me here to and she may just bring me to the Promised Land!!!

  • In a musical a voice may be not that excellent, but the soul and emotion still brings shivers down your spine. Lea's voice is quite good, but somehow it's too much mannerism and too little soul for me.

  • Nice voice

    Susan Boyle bought me here

  • Me, too.

I've listened to Lupone, Paige and now Lea Salonga.

Lea has a beautiful voice, but needs some control. Susan needs to enunciate, but that is a much smaller problem. Lupone was fantastic as was Paige.

Only Susan gave me chills. Not because she's the under-dog...it is her voice and interpretation.

I can only say Ditto to your comments! I thought the same! :-) Very interesting!

  • I would also like to give a +1 to those asking people to refrain from spamming videos of this song with Susan Boyle-related comments. Please keep those comments on the videos, nobody wants to read copypasted rubbish irrelevant to the current video. Thank you.

  • Good grief! It will only be a matter of time before Susan Boyle will all bring you to the Promised Land or to Paradise. Hop off from this channel people. It's clearly stated in the title-- Lea Salonga (read: NOT Susan)

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here...

  • Frankly, i sort of get annoyed with the comment "Susan brought me here". That simply means you are not enjoying the music but trying to find flaws in every singer by doing comparison. Darling, you would never be happy with such attitude.

  • it's the truth though...I'm not a broadway afficionado by any stretch. If I had not heard of Susan Boyle I would have never been curious enough to hear other versions. This is good for any artist who has sung "I dreamed a dream" in the past. It certainly made me appreciate Lea's talent and now I know about her. The fact that "Susan brought me here" is a good thing.

  • susan boyle brougth me here

  • Susan Boyle brought me here...yeah. And Lea Salonga is the best as well =]

  • When I heard susan boyle's voice, I knew I heard that voice before and I was right, Susan has Leah's voice. Susan sings as good as Leah.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here....!

  • for the people who are saying "susan boyle IS fantine" learn the story. fantine's character is a deserted single mother who had to resort to prostitution to support her daughter, eventually leading to her tragic death, which is what this song is about. even if you base the context of the song to her life, fantine and susan boyle are nothing alike.

i just think it's funny when people say that.

  • I leave you to work out how the words that Ms Boyle sang have reality for her. It is not hard.

  • Comment removed

  • Lea Salonga has been my favourite singer ever since I was a child. But when I heard Susan Boyle sing...wow!!! She's blown me away...

  • After listening all the singers sing the same song, I prefer Susan. She is gifted. Her voice is heaven. The emotion is so clear, you can almost feel the thing happening to you! :D

  • but then again, i prefer Lea Salonga to watch, so i'd rather go to Lea Salonga who sings a little less, but accually doesnt turn u to stone when u watch her, unlike Susan Boyle xD

  • Get a life u freak

  • Lea Salonga still the best among the rest!!!!!!!!!!

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here....!

  • although lea sings professional, theres not much emotion going through the song which the most important thing to catching peoples attention

  • Until Susan we were comparing on a relatively common theatrical basis. Personally I would say having watched all the versions I can find that lea was the best, on the ear, eye and dramatically. Ruth H can sing alright ... but that lisp on the Ss !!! Lea is an outstanding professional no question clearly top class; the best ? but Susan with her simplicity and style IS Fontine they are different Lea is magic, fantastic, wonderful - so professional however I prefer to listen to and watch Susan
  • me, too. I dont want to judge who is better than who. I just feel like listening to watch Susan best (just my own opinion).

  • > Susan

    > with her simplicity and style

    > IS Fontine

    yes.

  • Comment removed

  • clearly Lea is a professional. Susan Boyle's version had a lot of emotion because of her background and circumstances. The way the world views and rewards talent these days based on beauty and youth has caused a lot of dreams to die for so many people. Susan Boyle was the example of why dreams should never die.People have found new inspiration from her courage to face the world despite all of the odds. For all the Susan critics you need to simply realize that people just want a fair chance in life

  • Lea achieved the same thing....but with the asian community...she paved the way for other asian singers to make something of themselves especially in the broadway scene....she has inspired many too...with the roles she has played, winning many awards including a Tony...Lea will always be Disney's Princess Jasmine & Mulan, the best eponine, kim in miss saigon, and one of the best fantines....

  • Susan Boyle brought me here. Susan's lung power and styling is unbeatable.

  • Susan Boyle is not a professionally trained singer with a flawless voice. Lea is superior. however given the empathy, breathing and circumstance Susan's version is my favourite I could hear it again and again I have seen about ten versions on Youtube Maybe Susan has the least voice of all of them technically, if say measured on some computerised chart but hers is the most pleasurable she just gets inside you she is Fontine so the purists may wince but Susan Boyle has nailed this one
  • Susan Boyle brought me here..

  • Susan Boyle brought me here..

  • I wish Susan will win BGT

  • Susan Boyle brought me here..

  • lea salonga brought me here. i appreciated susan boyle's singing prowess because of lea.

  • Lea has a very fine voice, Susan sings great too.

  • This woman is great also..I like that she enunciates the words & I can hear it finally , every word.

But! I like Susan's voice..it has so much heart & soul..& I agree with another poster, Patti La Pone was not so great...weak compared to Susan.

  • Susan Boyle brought me here..

  • copy and paste if susan boyle brought you here

  • lea and susan are incomparable. Lea is a professional and got the talent and experience on her hands while susan was just living her dream now. Goodluck to Susan and hope she wins BGT so that her dreams will now be really fulfilled.

  • Susan Boyle can Fix this world !! she is exactly what we needed....

  • Explain your thinking, im curious as to how you think she can fix this world...

  • SkiaMac, I guess with all things negative happening all around us, she is about the only positive thing that has happened in a while..

  • Fair enough. Im glad she inspired you and so many others. She is however just an unfortunate woman with a brilliant voice, not a saint.

  • Thank you.

  • Yes, Susan Boyle brought me here. I've listened to about 10 broadway singers do this song tonight and Susan blew them away. I listened without seeing the faces - that's NOT what matters here. Susan's voice just has a certain something that the others don't have. Susan is far and away the best. Patti LaPone was one of the worst on this song. - more talking than singing! Lea's version is wonderful, but lack's a certain quality which Susan posseses.

  • copy and paste if susan boyle brought you here

  • This was excellent, but Susan has a stronger voice. Lea used a beautiful pianissimo on the really hard notes, while Susan not only hit those notes, but was able to do so with crescendo.

  • Susan Boyle sang it well, sure.. but i don't think she's better than Lea Salonga...the only reason why she became an instant phenomenon is becoz a lot of people didn't expect her to sing that well...come on people, if she's pretty im sure things would be a lot different... the judges esp simon would be more critical to her and regard her as another wannabe...He had come across with a lot of pretty and more talented contestants in AI but still can't get his 100% approval..But, good luck to Susan

  • Lea is great!...Susan Boyle version brings me to tears.

Pattie Lupone was okay....Ironically, I thought Paige was the worst!

  • Susan Boyle brought me here..

  • Susan Boyle brought me here.

Of course Lea is a fantastic singer. She is also beautiful, successful and well-known. The reason we all love SB so much, however, is that she is also fantastic AND such an underdog. She came out of nowhere and NAILED THE SONG!

  • You don't have to be ugly to feel pain or to understand this song. Susan is a good singer, but let's call a spade a spade. If she was beautiful and sounded exactly the same, she would've been written off merely as a decent showtune singer and not made it anywhere on the show. Instead, she's ugly, so now she's an international celebrity and her mindless fans are going around spamming other singers' videos. Susan Boyle failed to open your mind. Lea Salonga is is a beautiful singer and actress.

  • lea is a professional broadway star..got a tony and lawrence olivier award for Miss Saigon. The singing voice of Mulan (Reflection), Jasmine in Alladin ang other disney movies...countless broadway performances....but Susan Boyle is a shocker....Good Luck Susan!!!...and Lea, when is your next Broadway perfomance?...,

  • copy and paste if susan boyle brought you here

  • Leah Salonga sounded better Susan Boyle. Leah's voice quality is better, imo. Plus she has more control over her voice. BUT then again, Leah had years and years of broadway training and Susan Boyle did not.

I think Susan did justice to this song. Very beautiful voice. Talented singer.

  • OH NO, I hate to compare but susan boyle nailed it than Leah!

  • who care's about Susan Boyle's mistake, still sang great!!!!!

  • Of all the versions of this song, I believe Ruthie Henshaw is definitive. But Lea and Susan Boyle are tied for 2d. All are wonderful.

  • Saw Susan Boyle on CNN's Larry King . She made a mistake singing the song

  • What mistake did Susan do to the song? Susan brought me here. I never heard Susan before. Thanks!

  • Susan Boyle! Susan Boyle! Susan Boyle!!! You captured my heart!!! You're voice is soooo captivating & peaceful.... Thank YOU Susan!!!

  • Susan Boyle brought me here..

  • SB brought me here.

  • Susan still has a long way to go to be a talented opera singer. On the other hand she is fantastic for a talent show

  • I've been listening over and over again to many of the singers who sing I dreamed a dream- still my favourite has to be Ruthie singing in the 10th anniversary concert. I do love the raw talent of Susan boyle - do listen to the you tube recording of her singing Cry me A River from 9 years ago - knockout!

    helen3

  • Susan Boyle brought me here -

People are right, you cant compare these two women to each other...because they are singing in different styles. This song was written and composed for a musical, sang to capture a moment in a story. This is how Lea sings it, more so beautifully.

Ms. Boyle's heartfelt rendition is in a different mood.

Susan's rendition of "Cry Me A River" leaked, give a listen. Also consider that while Ms. Salonga would cover this song beautifully as well, probably wouldn't compare.
