Mike Newell is a very interesting choice for director. I mean he hasn't directed any epic films before. I mean, he directed Four weddings and a funeral and the 4th Harry Potter movie (which isn't an epic, it's a fantasy adventure film). Why can't they name the Prince "Dastan"? Fine lets name him "The Prince" and see how people will find that stupid. If they didn't name the prince it would be a flaw to the characterization of the movie. In the game it's alright because it's mostly about playing. They also change the name Farah to Tamina because they want gamers far away from thinking she is Farah and just another princess. They aren't basing this movie to the game. They want to make this a great story.

See this is why so many video game movies fail so hard. The directors take the game and then try to make it original by replacing characters or key plot devices with their own, and in doing so they completely fuck up the lore of the game they're trying to immortalize onto film. Stick with the original characters and plot for christ's sake!

Sticking to the game will only make the movie suck worse. Game are made to be played and movies are meant to be watched. The reason why game movies failed so hard was because they are too close to the game that lacks story and characterization for a movie (Silent Hill, and Max Payne). Besides I don't want to watch a movie about jumping, running to places and fighting over and over again and an hour and a half. Nor do I want a nameless prince with no background.

well what i meant was like the doom movie. had NOTHING to do with the game except it took place on mars and the aliens looked like the demons. do it like the final fantasy movie, not the first one because that flopped because, like the doom movie, there were more differences than similarities to the game. Keep the characters the same, keep the atmosphere the same, but feel free to make a new story, as long as you don't make it ridiculous and not make sense with the game.

Final Fantasy 7: Advent children did a fantastic job of making a movie from a game (albeit it was made by the same people). Also like how Ensemble Studios took Bungie's Halo and made another game that still coincided with the rest of the Halo universe and didn't suck. If you've seen the cutscenes from Halo Wars I think you might agree if they'd just made all the cutscenes into and hour and a half long movie it could have done well.
